    Abstract: When a sodium leakage accident occurs in the sodium-cooled fast reactor, the leaked sodium reacts violently with the air in the form of droplets, resulting in the phenomenon of sodium spray fire. The droplet size distribution formed by liquid sodium injection is the key factor affecting the accident analysis of sodium spray fire. Based on the theory of the maximum entropy principle, a semi-empirical model of sodium spray droplet size distribution is constructed, which is constrained by the mass equation or the momentum equation with viscous resistance, respectively. Based on the existing liquid fuel droplet size distribution experiment results and the sodium spray fire experiment results, the semi-empirical model is verified, which shows that the prediction result with the semi-empirical model constrained by the momentum equation is in good agreement with the experimental result with the error of about 20%. Furthermore, the proposed sodium spray droplet model is compared with other models of the empirical model, the semi-empirical model, and the model based on the maximum entropy principle constrained by the simplified mass equation. The simulation result with the proposed model matches the experimental data better with minor error.

    Abstract: Objective: The aim of our case-control study was to find the influence of lifestyle and comorbidities on COVID-19 susceptibility, identify risk factors and protective factors, and identify ways to encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Methods: Patients with COVID-19 were matched with non-COVID-19 participants in a ratio of 1:2. Univariate analysis was performed using the chi-square test, and multivariate analysis was performed using conditional logistic regression. Results: Multivariate analysis using conditional logistic regression found that alcohol consumption (AC) and a bland diet increased the risk of COVID-19, while college degrees and above, smoking, drinking tea, and exercise, especially walking, significantly reduced the risk of COVID-19. Conclusion: After removing the effects of demographic factors, the study demonstrated that AC significantly reduced the ability of the body to resist COVID-19 infection. Moreover, following a bland diet increased the susceptibility to COVID-19. Notably, people who drank tea and performed regular exercises, especially walking, were significantly less likely to be infected with COVID-19. College degree or above relative illiteracy is COVID-19 protective factors of infection.

    Abstract: Sex dimorphism is a key feature of Chinese soft-shelled turtle ( Pelodiscus sinensis ). The males (M) have higher econosmic value than females (F) due to wider calipash and faster growth. Exogenous hormones like estradiol and methyltestosterone can induce sexual reversal to form new phenotypes (pseudo-female, PF; pseudo-male, PM) without changing the genotype. The possibility of inducing sexual reversal is particularly important in aquaculture breeding, but the underlying biological mechanisms remain unclear. Here we applied a direct RNA sequencing method with ultralong reads using Oxford Nanopore Technologies to study the transcriptome complexity in P. sinensis . Nanopore sequencing of the four gender types (M, F, PF, and PM) showed that the distribution of read length and gene expression was more similar between same-sex phenotypes than same-sex genotypes. Compared to turtles with an M phenotype, alternative splicing was more pronounced in F turtles, especially at alternative 3′ splice sites, alternative 5′ splice sites, and alternative first exons. Furthermore, the two RNA methylation modifications m5C and m6A were differentially distributed across gender phenotypes, with the M type having more modification sites in coding sequence regions, but fewer modification sites in 3′UTR regions. Quantitative analysis of enriched m6A RNAs revealed that the N6-methylated levels of Odf2 , Pacs2 , and Ak1 were significantly higher in M phenotype individuals, while the N6-methylated levels of Ube2o were reduced after sexual reversal from both M and F phenotypes. Taken together, these findings reveal an important role of epigenetics during sexual reversal in Chinese soft-shelled turtles.

    Abstract: No spatial analysis of hair selenium and Keshan disease (KD) on a nationwide county-level has been performed. Selenium deficiency is a recognized environmental risk factor for KD. Hair selenium is one of the recognized biomarkers of selenium nutrition. This study aimed to perform a geographically precise and visualized assessment of the achievement of KD prevention and control at the level of selenium nutrition in terms of etiology. Methods A spatial ecological study was conducted. The hair selenium content of the residents was assayed using an atomic fluorescence spectrometer. The spatial analysis was performed using ArcGIS. Results The median of the hair selenium levels of the 3,028 participants in the 1,174 counties was 0.38 mg/kg, and the content of inhabitants in KD endemic counties was significantly lower than that in KD non-endemic counties (0.34 vs. 0.39 mg/kg, z = −10.03, P & lt; 0.0001). The proportion of Se-deficient and Se-marginal counties in KD endemic counties was significantly higher than that in KD non-endemic counties (59.4 vs. 29.0%, z = −7.45, P & lt; 0.0001). The global autocorrelation analysis was not statistically significant (Moran's I = 0.0005, P = 0.68). Local autocorrelation analysis identified 174 low-low clusters of hair selenium levels, 83 (47.7%) of which are KD endemic counties located in KD endemic provinces of Henan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, Jilin, and Heilongjiang. The hair selenium featured a positive correlation with per capita GDP ( r s = 0.20, P & lt; 0.0001). Conclusion The median of the hair selenium levels of inhabitants living in KD endemic counties was significantly lower than that in KD non-endemic counties. All the 83 KD endemic counties with low-low clusters of hair selenium levels should be prioritized in KD precision prevention and control. These findings are geographically precise and visualized evidence of the assessment of the effectiveness of KD prevention and control at the level of selenium nutrition in terms of etiology.

    Abstract: Zinc (Zn) malnutrition is a common health problem, especially in developing countries. The human health and economic benefits of the replacement of conventional flour with Zn-biofortified wheat flour in rural household diets were assessed. One hundred forty-five wheat flour samples were collected from rural households in Quzhou County. Then, field experiments were conducted on wheat at two Zn levels (0 and 0.4% ZnSO 4 · 7H 2 O foliar application) under 16 diverse agricultural practices in Quzhou County. Foliar Zn application significantly increased the Zn concentration and bioavailability in wheat grain and flour. If rural households consumed Zn-biofortified flour instead of self-cultivated flour or flour purchased from supermarkets, 257–769 or 280–838, 0.46–1.36 million or 0.50–1.49 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) lost, respectively, could be saved in Quzhou County and China. Amounts of 2.3–12.0 million and 5.5–22.6 billion RMB could be obtained via Zn-biofortified flour in Quzhou County and China, respectively. The current study indicates that Zn-biofortified flour via foliar Zn application is a win-win strategy to maintain the yield and combat human Zn deficiency in rural households in China. More health and economic benefits could be obtained in rural household dependent on wheat flour purchased from supermarkets than in those dependent on self-cultivated wheat flour.

    Abstract: The discrepancy between the high technical success rate and the relatively low clinical response rate of renal artery stenting (RAS) raises the importance to identify atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (ARAS) patients who are most likely to benefit from RAS. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and accuracy of blood oxygen level-dependent magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD-MRI) in predicting split renal function (SRF) improvement after RAS in patients with ARAS. Methods Thirty patients with severe ARAS who were treated with RAS were enrolled. Baseline cortical and medullary R2* values of each kidney were measured by BOLD-MRI, and each patient’s SRF was evaluated by nuclear renal dynamic imaging at baseline and 1-month follow-up. Results In total, 35 severe stenotic renal arteries of the 30 patients were analyzed. At 1-month follow-up, 34 kidneys (97.1%) of severe ARAS had acquired SRF. SRF improved in 12 kidneys of 10 patients. The cortical R2* and medullary R2* values in the SRF improvement kidneys were higher than those in the non-improvement kidneys ( P ≤ 0.001). The area under the curve of medullary R2* was 0.879 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.736–1.000). A medullary R2* value ≥29.1 s –1 was noted to provide good sensitivity (0.833, 95% CI 0.552–0.970) and specificity (0.864, 95% CI 0.667–0.953) in predicting SRF improvement. Medullary R2* value was the only independent predictor of SRF improvement in multivariable analysis ( P = 0.034, OR 3.017, 95%CI 1.089–8.358). Conclusion This study showed that a BOLD-MRI medullary R2* value ≥29.1 s –1 was an excellent predictor of SRF improvement in patients with severe ARAS who underwent renal artery stenting.

    Abstract: The pathophysiological mechanisms of intermittent claudication (IC) progression to chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) are still vague and which of patients with IC will become CLTI are unknown. This study aimed to investigate the key molecules and pathways mediating IC progression to CLTI by a quantitative bioinformatic analysis of a public RNA-sequencing database of patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) to screen biomarkers discriminating IC and CLTI. Methods The GSE120642 dataset was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between IC and CLTI tissues were analyzed using the “edgeR” packages of R. The Gene Ontology and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment analyses were performed to explore the functions of DEGs. Protein–protein interaction (PPI) networks were established by the Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes (STRING) database and visualized by Cytoscape software. Hub genes were selected by plugin cytoHubba. Gene set enrichment analysis was performed and the receiver operating characteristic curves were used to evaluate the predictive values of hub genes. Results A total of 137 upregulated and 21 downregulated DEGs were identified. Functional enrichment clustering analysis revealed a significant association between DEGs and the complement and coagulation cascade pathways. The PPI network was constructed with 155 nodes and 105 interactions. The most significantly enriched pathway was complement activation. C1QB, C1QA, C1QC, C4A, and C1R were identified and validated as hub genes due to the high degree of connectivity. The area under the curve values for the five hub genes were greater than 0.95, indicating high accuracy for discriminating IC and CLTI. Conclusion The complement activation pathway is associated with IC progression to CLTI. C1QB, C1QA, C1QC, C4A, and C1R might serve as potential early biomarkers of CLTI.

    Abstract: Purpose: Coronary artery disease (CAD) and atrial fibrillation (AF) often coexist and lead to a much higher risk of mortality in the elderly population. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score could predict the risk of death in elderly patients with CAD and AF. Methods: Hospitalized patients aged ≥65 years with a diagnosis of CAD and AF were recruited consecutively. Patients were divided into 5 groups according to the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score (≤2, =3, =4, =5, and ≥6). At least a 1-year follow-up was carried out for the assessment of all-cause death. Results: A total of 1,579 eligible patients were recruited, with 582 all-cause deaths (6.86 per 100 patient-years) occurring during a follow-up of at least 1 year. With the increase in the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score, the 1-year and 5-year survival rate decreased (96.4% vs. 95.7% vs. 94.0% vs. 86.5% vs. 85.7%, respectively, P & lt; 0.001; 78.4% vs. 68.9% vs. 64.6% vs. 55.5% vs. 50.0%, respectively, P & lt; 0.001). Compared with the patients with CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score & lt;5, for patients with CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score ≥5, the adjusted hazard ratio for death was 1.78 (95% CI: 1.45–2.18, P & lt; 0.001). The predictive values of the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score ≥5 for in-hospital (C-index = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.62–0.69, P & lt; 0.001), 1-year (C-index = 0.65, 95% CI: 0.63–0.67, P & lt; 0.001) and 5-year (C-index = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.59–0.61, P & lt; 0.001) death were in comparable. Conclusion: In elderly patients with concomitant CAD and AF, the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score can be used to predict death with moderate accuracy.
