Notizen: The anaesthetic considerations of patients presenting for extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy are described. Regional anaesthesia with sedation may be preferable to general anaesthesia for patients undergoing this form of therapy. If regional anaesthesia is contra-indicated, general anaesthesia using controlled ventilation with muscle relaxation, supplemented with a narcotic and a low concentration of volatile anaesthetic has been found to be a suitable alternative. The additional epidural preparation time has to be balanced against the benefits of easier patient transfer. especially during multi-stage procedures, and better postoperative analgesia. The epidural catheter can be left in situ in patients who require multiple treatments or who may experience severe ureteric pain as the resulting ‘sand mass’ is passed. Epidural space localisation using a ‘loss of resistance to saline’ technique is recommended, in order to avoid the possible risk of damage to the spinal cord and emerging nerves (due to the presence of an air-water interface). Patients with cardiac insufficiency need special consideration, in view of the effects of immersion on right and left heart filling pressures.

Notizen: Twisting of roots of sugar beet has been associated with the application to the soil of certain herbicides. Severe twisting resulted in root constrictions which in some respects resembled ‘strangles’. Symptoms were most severe when the herbicide was intimately mixed with the soil either after or immediately before sowing.

Notizen: A field study was conducted to examine the fate and potential effects of olestra, a non-caloric fat replacer, in septic tanks. The study compared the performance of parallel septic tanks, which were led domestic waste water with liquid and solid forms of olestra, against a control tank receiving waste water without olestra. Results showed that 36 g/d of olestra dosed to the tanks (a three-fold exaggeration of expected loadings) had no adverse effect on system operation (based on visual observations and sludge accumulation) or performance (based on removal of organic content and solids) over a six-month period. Removal efficiencies for total suspended solids (TSS), carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand (CBOD), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were not significantly different (p〈0.05) in the olestra tanks when compared to the control tank. In addition, a relatively small amount of the total olestra added (3 to 6%) was recovered in the septic tank effluents over the course of the study. Accumulation of tank solids was not affected as measured sludge levels in the tank at the middle and end of the study showed no difference between the olestra dosed tanks and the control tank.

Notizen: Summary Dyskeratosis congenita is an inherited disorder characterized by nail dystrophy, skin pigmentary changes, mucosal leukoplakia, pancytopenia and an increased incidence of malignancy. Because of a widely held view that the outcome of bone marrow transplantation in dyskeratosis congenita is poor, this treatment option is sometimes not considered when pancytopenia develops. We present a child currently doing well 3 years after bone marrow transplantation, and review the literature.

Notizen: Winter hardening of first-year black spruce [Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.] seedlings was studied by assessing a number of morphological and physiological changes under three hardening regimes: 1) early removal (ER), in which seedlings were exposed to natural daylengths and low ambient temperatures outside. 2) extended greenhouse culture (EG), in which seedlings were exposed to natural daylengths and warm temperatures, and 3) short day (SD), in which seedlings were exposed to short daylengths and low ambient temperatures outside. Measurements included needle primordia initiation, embryonic shoot volume, terminal bud mitotic index, embryonic shoot average cell volume, and shoot tip frost hardiness. EG seedlings formed buds containing 4 times as many needle primordia as ER stock. Embryonic shoot volume increased with number of needle primordia initiated, until late in the hardening period, when significant reductions in meristem volumes of SD and EG stock were observed. Frost hardiness increased sooner in seedlings which set bud in response to short days, but SD treatment did not result in significantly greater frost hardiness at the end of the trial. Frost hardiness was correlated with mitotic index of the embryonic shoot. Cell size in the embryonic shoot declined in seedlings of all treatments during hardening, however, EG seedlings had significantly lower cell volumes by the end of the trial in comparison to ER and SD seedlings.

Notizen: Changes in abscisic acid (ABA) were followed in the buds and youngest stems of 6-year-old sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) saplings at approximately monthly intervals during the year. High levels present in the buds in July and August showed a moderate decline through early October, but subsequently increased following leaf fall and reached the maximum values detected during the study in November and December. Thereafter ABA fell sharply, reaching its lowest point immediately prior to budbreak in early May. While ABA in the stems followed a somewhat similar pattern, only minor changes were observed in the relatively low values detected between June and November. Except for the spring months, when concentrations of ABA in the stems and buds were at minimum levels, the buds always contained several times more inhibitor per unit dry weight of tissue. Analysis of selected samples from both tissues showed that bound (alkaline-hydrolyzable) ABA increased during the overwintering season, with the highest values noted in the spring. Although the patterns of change observed in this study are indicative of a role for ABA in the overwintering process, ABA does not appear to be the primary endogenous factor responsible for initiation of the dormant state.
