Notes: Background: Accuracy of the total color replication process has not been clinically evaluated for various porcelain visual shade-matching systems. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the final color replication process of three porcelain visual shade-matching systems. Subjects' natural dentition was compared with laboratory-fabricated individualized porcelain shade tabs. Materials and Methods: Shade matches of 10 subjects' incisors were obtained using three different porcelain visual shade-matching systems. Commercial laboratories fabricated one corresponding individualized porcelain shade tab for each incisor per visual shade-matching system selection. Color-match evaluations of the fabricated individualized porcelain shade tabs to the corresponding teeth were completed by prosthodontists' consensus and by subjects' self-evaluation using the US Public Health Service criteria. Statistical analysis was carried out on the combined evaluations with logistic regression and the Generalized Estimating Equation for repeated measures. Results: The Vitapan 3D Master/Omega 900 system (Vident Inc., Brea, CA, USA) was significantly more likely than the Vita Lumin Vacuum/VMK 68 system (Vident Inc.) to obtain a clinically acceptable color match (odds ratio [OR] = 6.31; 95% CI = 1.24–32.07). The likelihood of obtaining a clinically acceptable color match through subjects' self-evaluation was found to be significantly higher compared with prosthodontists' consensus (OR = 2.75; 95% CI = 1.27–5.94). Conclusions: Within the limits of this preliminary study, significant differences in clinical acceptability were seen between the color matches of the fabricated individualized porcelain shade tabs from different systems and subjects' central incisors. Subjects' range of acceptability was much broader compared with that of the prosthodontists in assessing the color match of the fabricated porcelain shade tabs.

Notes: An electrical conductivity probe, designed for use with “direct push” technology, has been successfully used to locate buried drums, contaminant plumes, and to precisely locate and characterize a previously installed permeable reactive iron wall. The conductivity probe was designed to characterize various soil and sediment types as it was driven through the dry and saturated soil matrix; however, its ability to locate and characterize subsurface anomalies may also prove to be a valuable asset. The probe uses an electrical field that works like and mimics the results from an oilfield engineering tool called the Wenner array. This electrical field array penetrates into the soil matrix to measure the electrical conductivity of the soil matrix surrounding the probe to a radius of about two to four inches. This tool has allowed operating personnel to verify the location of manmade or natural subsurface anomalies with precision.

Notes: It is often necessary to collect core samples that are not accommodated by standard sampling protocols, This paper describes innovative techniques using existing technology that enables researchers to collect samples at upgradient and downgradient interfaces from a zero-valent iron wall so that the most active zone of chromium remediation and biologic activity can be studied. It describes the methodology used and how the direct-push technology was adapted so that the desired samples could be collected. It also explains why new methods were needed and demonstrates the results of these efforts.

Notes: Direct-push sampling was conducted at a site previously characterized with conventional monitoring wells. Hydrogeological and chemical heterogeneities not represented in the original site conceptual model were detected by direct-push sampling. These heterogeneities were important in terms of their impact on the assessment of monitored natural attenuation at the site. This research suggests that additional sampling efforts could be attempted at some sites to test the accuracy of site conceptual models. The leading edge of a contaminant plume must be examined closely, because conceptual errors in this area could easily allow impacts to receptors to remain undetected.

Notes: Two distinct strain-related patterns of organism-host interaction on dorsal tongue of immunocompetent rats have been identified for Candida albicans: some isolates induce mucosal lesions, while other isolates penetrate the keratin layer hut do not produce a lesion. This study examined the behavior of each of the two types of isolates in a cyclosporin-immunosuppressed rat model. Groups B (normal) and D (cyclosporin) were orally inoculated with a lesion-inducing isolate of C. albicans. while a non-lesional isolate was given to Groups A (normal) and C (cyclosporin). A typical dorsal tongue lesion developed in 4/18 rats in Group B and in 13/16 in Group D (p= 0.00267). No significant difference in infection rate between the normal and cyclosporin-treated animals was seen for the non-lesional isolate. The lack of a host inflammatory response associated with the non-lesional isolate may represent an ecologic advantage for the organism.

Notes: The vertical distribution of free and residual aviation gasoline, a light nonaqueous phase liquid (LNAPL), through the capillary fringe of a uniform, medium sand is measured and used to calibrate an existing model. The total saturation profile is governed by a classical moisture retention characteristic, with the matric pressure head scaled by LNAPL/air surface tension in the presence of free LNAPL and water/air surface tension in the absence of free LNAPL. The residual LNAPL is described by an empirical equation reflecting hysteretical trapping due to a fluctuating water table. The existing theory is calibrated with new and published field data at an aviation gasoline spill site in Traverse City, Michigan.
