Notes: Design of a 2-GeV synchrotron radiation facility is well in progress in Pohang, Korea. The first portion of the injector linac has been delivered and installation will be from July 1991. Prototype storage ring magnets are to be delivered soon. Prototype magnet power supplies have been fabricated and tested. Detailed design studies are being carried out at present.

Notes: The dynamics of the ionization processes in an oxygen Z-pinch plasma has been numerically studied. Ionization balance equations incorporated in single-fluid magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations were solved. The focus was on the imploding phase before a shock wave was fully developed. It was shown that the propagation speed of an ionization stage is larger than the fluid speed. For example, the propagation speed of O III ionization stage is faster than the fluid speed at the position of the peak density of O III particles. The larger propagation speeds of ionization stages than the fluid speed result from the propagation of Joule heating power. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In order to collect radiation from a distant light source and to compensate astigmatism, a toroidal mirror is often placed in front of a grazing-incidence spectrograph. In this study, characteristics of space-resolved spectra obtained with such a system have been investigated using a ray-tracing analysis. The following was found: in the stigmatic focal region of the spectrum, the spatial resolution along the sagittal direction is excellent but that along the meridional direction is poor; on the other hand, in the astigmatic wavelength region, the trend is reversed, i.e., the spatial resolution along the sagittal direction is poor but that along the meridional direction is good, particularly in the wavelength region which is far from the stigmatic focus. The method was successfully applied to the space-resolved spectroscopic study of a capillary discharge plasma. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
