Kurzfassung:
Storm surge is an important factor that contributes to coastal flooding and erosion by temporarily raising water levels, which allows more wave energy to reach vulnerable sea cliffs and infrastructure. The coincident occurrence of high storm surge and high waves near high tide provides the “perfect storm” scenario for significant coastal damage. Since strong storms that make landfall are often accompanied by high waves, storm surge variability in space and time allows estimation of the coastal changes that are occurring and might be expected to increase as a result of global warming. This is an important consideration for coastal planners, especially under rising sea levels that will significantly magnify the coastal impact of storm surge and waves.
