Notes: Abstract Report of a syndrome consisting of hypo- and aplasia of several phalanges of fingers and toes, hypo- and aplasia of interphalangeal joints, synostoses of carpal and tarsal bones, and dysplasia of the cubital joints. The anomalies could be observed through three generations with regular manifestation. Specific patterns of dermatoglyphics were examined and compared with those described by Degenhardt and Geipel in a similar malformation syndrome and with observations in children with exogenous skeletal defects. The relationship of the malformations seen in this family to other known syndromes and our knowledge of the inheritance of such malformations are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Thinlayer- and columnchromatographic studies on brain gangliosides of Tay-Sachs-disease indicate, that the increase of gangliosides in Tay-Sachs brain is due to the accumulation of a fast moving fraction. In normal child brain only traces of this fraction are detectable. The quantitative analysis displays as building blocks sphingosin, stearic acid, galactose, glucose, galactosamin and N-acetyl-neuraminic acid in a molar ratio of 1:1:1:1:1:1, thus indicating that the T.S.-ganglioside is different from the normal gangliosides by the lack of one mol galactose. The normal tri-di- and monosialogangliosides account for ∼1% of the dry weight of the Tay-Sachs-brain. This is about the same percentage as it is in normal child brain. Quantitative studies of the “normal” gangliosides of Tay-Sachs brain showed them identical with gangliosides of normal child brain. One therefore may assume, that in Tay-Sachs-disease the formation of gangliosides is normal and that the accumulation of gangliosides is due to a defective degradation of the monosialoganglioside GIV.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary For quantitative determination of fecal protein losses the following procedure was employed: The feces were homogenized in a blender. Depending on th consistency of the feces, especially in normal persons water had to be added in a ratio 2:1 or 1:1 (w/w). An aliquot was centrifuged in a high speed centrifuge (Servall SS1) at 16000 rpm for 5 hours. The supernatant was filtered. The proteins of 1–2 ml of this fluid were precipitated with ethanol (end concentration 80%). After repeated washings of this precipitate with ethanol, the N-content was determined by a Mikrokjehldahl-method. Another aliquot of the original mixture was freeze dried, thus determining the dry wight and the whole fluid content of the feces vice verse. From these data, the daily protein losses were calculated. 10 normal persons had a mean protein loss of 0,51 g a day. (range 0.19–0.85 g). In patients with ulcerative colitis or enterocolitis this figures went up to 13,7 g/24 hours. One patient with protein loosing enteropathy due to intestinal lymphangiectasis excreted between 6 and 36 g proteins a day.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary J131 triolein was applicated by a duodenal tube to 27 patients. The radioactivity of the blood and the feces was compared with the results, obtained by peroral feeding of the labeled fat. The results indicate, that the advantage of a defined exposition of the labeled triolein to the fat-splitting enzymes and to the small bowel surface is equalized by the disadvantage of ineffective hydrolysation of the fat due to inadequate stimulation of the pancreas. So this modification of the J131 triolein test can not be favoured for clinical uses.
