Notes:
A study was made of 27 Chinese patients with kyphosis complicating 38 pregnancies encountered at Tsan Yuk Maternity Hospital, Hong Kong, over a 25-year period. There was no cardio-respiratory embarrassment in any of the cases. Obstetric hazards such as abortion, pelvic abnormality, marked pendulous abdomen, malpresentation and necessity for classical Caesarean section were found almost exclusively in those with kyphosis in the thoraco-lumbar region of the vertebral column. Deformities situated above or below the thoraco-lumbar region were much less likely to have adverse effects on childbirth. The incidences of anaemia, toxaemia of pregnancy, uterine inertia and prematurity were raised in kyphotic patients.
