Summary In 1981, the Sea Beam System was installed on RV “Sonne”, it is capable of producing real-time contour strip charts of the ocean floor. The system was tried out in the central Pacific Ocean during the cruise SO-21 in November 1981, when numerous bathymetric recordings of selected major and individual morphological structures of the sea floor were carried out. For the very first time it was possible to record flat deep-sea areas and to make an almost complete survey of a bigger seamount, situated SSW of the main island Hawaii, rising from a depth of 5500 m to 2180 m below sea level. The position of the highest peak is 15° 07′ N, 156° 40.3′ W. This is a report on the new surveying and evaluating method as well as on first topographic and morphological results. A manually compiled contour chart (scale 1∶100000) and two echo-sounding profile series give an impression of the different forms of relief of this previously unknown huge seamount.
