Notes: The growth inhibition of Tetrahymena furgasoni (once known as “T. pyriformis W”) by C19 and C21 steroids of similar structure was measured by determining cell population at 24 h and 48 h following addition of the steroid. A cis-fusion of the A/B rings junction, unsaturation at C-1,2, or C-4,5 and carbonyl substitution all enhanced inhibition, whereas the presence of two hydroxyl groups decreased inhibition. The results indicated that the transformation of C19 and C21 steroids by this protozoon may be part of a detoxication mechanism.

Notes: A combination cation/anion exchange process was developed to remove 96–97% of the phytate and 97–99% of the Ca and Mg from soy protein isolates. Application of either of the ion exchange treatments alone failed to effectively remove phytate from soy protein extracts and also failed to convert the remaining phytate to a dialyzable form. Effective removal of phytate was only achieved by the combination ion exchange treatment. Consideration of these findings led to a proposed mechanism for the sequential disruption of the protein-Ca/Mg-phytate complex by the ion exchange treatment.

Notes: [Auszug] IT is now some 16 years since the first discovery of offshore gas in UK waters, and 13 years since the first commercial discovery of oil. In the period from 1964 to the present nearly 1,800 wells have been drilled. To those involved in exploration and in the production of oil and gas these have ...

Notes: Summary Under otherwise identical fermentation conditions, the sugar source has been shown to have a marked effect on citric acid production by Aspergillus niger. Sucrose was the most favourable source, followed by glucose and fructose and then lactose. No citric acid was produced from galactose. Strong relationships were observed between citric acid production and the activities of certain enzymes in myccelial cell-free extracts prepared from fermentation samples. When sucrose, glucose, or fructose was the sugar source pyruvate carboxylase activity was high, but 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase activity was not detected. When galactose was the sugar source pyruvate carboxylase activity was low, but 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase activity was high. It is suggested that whereas glucose and fructose repress 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase, thereby causing accumulation of citric acid, galactose does not. The activity of aconitase showed a direct relationship to the citric acid production rate. Thus, the activity was highest when sucrose was the sugar source, and lowest when galactose was the source. It is suggested that when large amounts of citric acid are lost from the cell the activity of aconitase increases as a response to the diminished intracellular supply of its substrate.

Notes: Summary We examined the role of various stimulus parameters in electrically-induced catecholamine secretion by thin slices of bovine adrenal medulla. The stimulus parameters examined were voltage, duration, pulse width, and frequency for square-wave monophasic pulses. As each was examined it was held constant at a selected value for the evaluation of subsequent stimulus characteristics. For 16 mm2 tissue slices, catecholamine secretion was approximately linearly related to stimulus voltage over the range 20–80 volts, with a threshold of 20 V. Increasing the voltage beyond 80 V did not enhance secretion. Similarly, catecholamine secretion was dependent upon the frequency of stimulation. For stimuli delivered at 50 V for a 10-sec interval there was a four-fold increase in secretion over the frequency range 10–100/sec. Increasing pulse width at a constant voltage (50 V) over the range 0.4–2.0 msec resulted in a four-fold increase in catecholamine secretion. For pulses of 50 V, 50/sec and 0.8 msec pulse width, secretion was dependent upon the duration of the stimulus. Enhanced secretion was evident for times as short as 2 sec; between 5 and 15 sec of stimulation catecholamine secretion was linearly related to stimulus duration. Over the range 2–15 sec there was a five-fold enhancement of secretion. Electrically-induced catecholamine secretion by slices was markedly dependent upon stimulus parameters. In general, it was enhanced by increasing voltage, stimulus duration, pulse width and frequency. For most experiments a good choice of stimulus parameters appears to be 50 V, 10 sec duration, 0.8 msec pulse width delivered at a frequency of 50/sec. Maximizing all stimulus parameters resulted in a 17-fold enhancement of secretion.

Notes: Abstract We report third-sound studies of3He-4He mixture films for 0.3≲T≲1.8 K carried out in two different experimental situations. In one experiment detailed measurements of the amplitude of both the temperature and thickness variation of the film were made for pure4He and the results for |ΔT/Δd| are in good agreement with the predictions of Bergman. Mixture studies in this apparatus were made difficult due to the presence of capillary condensation. In spite of this a number of interesting results are reported. Subsequent measurements were made in a new apparatus where capillary condensation effects could be demonstrably avoided. Helium films of 5.7 layers of4He were studied as a function of added amounts of3He. BelowT≃0.7 K the third-sound measurements are consistent with model calculations based on a bilayer film. We conclude that for 0.3≲T≲0.6 K films of the type we have studied are isotopically layered in the van der Waals field provided by the substrate.

Notes: The accuracy of kinetic and stoichiometric data obtained from most laboratory-scale continuous-culture equipment, particularly involving gaseous measurements, may be much lower than many workers realize, despite the use of good quality instruments. For example, errors in specific oxygen uptake measurements (QO2) easily can be as high as ±100%. This article assesses the accuracies of individual instruments and of the overall system in greater detail than has previously been reported and suggestions are made as to how the errors can be reduced to acceptable levels.

Notes: Abstract Variable temperature57Fe Mössbauer spectra have been recorded in the range 80–300 K for a number of low molecular weight amorphous polymers containing ferrocene units. These include samples of polyvinylferrocene, polydivinylferrocene by anionic initiation and polydivinylferrocene by cationic initiation. A similar non-linear temperature dependence of InA was observed for all the polymers, although they contain ferrocene units in different structural arrangements. A Debye model was extended to include intramolecular vibrations, and a fit to the experimental data was obtained. However, the model did not yield satisfactory fitting parameters. The observed behaviour of the experimental data could be accounted for by assuming that each macromolecule vibrates within an anharmonic potential.
