Notes: This study employs multivariate analyses with retrospective self-report data to assess the relative importance of certain childhood and adolescent experiences to the commission of violent crimes as an adult. Specifically, the relationship is examined between violent criminal behavior and exposure to family violence, exposure to television violence, school performance, other adolescent activities, and differential reinforcement for previous illegal acts. The exploratory model is based on data collected on 100 male inmates incarcerated for violent crimes and 65 nonincarcerated, nonviolent males matched in terms of age, race, and neighborhood. Findings, from analyses which estimate both additive and interactive effects, indicate that the background experiences associated with violent crime vary depending upon an individual's race. The discussion focuses on the implications of these findings for further research on the causes of violent criminal behavior.

Notes: Summary Coexisting Crowned Plovers Vanellus coronatus and Blackwinged Plovers V. melanopterus were studied to determine whether niche partitioning occurred or was necessary to facilitate their coexistence. The results of this study show that niche partitioning did not occur. We suggest that the association of these two species potentially enhances the ability of each to detect and avoid predation, in spite of any possible deleterious effect of interspecific competition (e.g. reduced per capita food intake).

Notes: Summary Flecainide acetate depresses the rate of depolarization of action potential (Vmax), the so-called “membrane stablizing action.” In the intact heart it has a unique profile of substantial effect on conduction with modest effect on refractoriness. After intravenous administration, clinical electrophysiologic studies show that conduction through atrial myocardium, atrioventricular (AV) node, His-Purkinje system, and ventricular myocardium is depressed, the most prominent effect being on the His-Purkinje system. Refractorines of the normal atrial and AV nodal myocardium is not prolonged while that of the ventricular muscle is slightly increased. Atrial fibrillation (60% to 70%), atrial tachycardia (90% to 100%), and nodal and AV tachycardia (80% to 90%) are generally terminated, while flutter is usually slowed, but in a small proportion of patients (10% to 20%) might be terminated by the intravenous use of flecainide acetate. This drug has also been shown to be effective in terminating stable ventricular tachycardia (70%). However, it appears to be slightly less effective in suppressing inducibility of ventricular arrhythmias. Administered orally, flecainide is very effective in decreasing ventricular ectopic activity (80% to 95%) and nonsustained ventricular tachycardia. Thus, flecainide has a wide range of antiarrhythmic properties, making it a useful agent in the management of a variety of supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias. In a small proportion of patients, however, its use can lead to apparent arrhythmogenic effects, the most dangerous being exacerbation of ventricular tachycardia.

Notes: Abstract The coupled spectrophotometric assay for RuBP carboxylase was compared with the conventional radiometric assay to assess the validity of its use in the measurement of initial and total activities in crude leaf extracts. At high magnesium concentrations both assays gave the same absolute values of initial and total activities, and resolved similarly the changes of total activity and activation state (ratio of initial to total activity) which occurred when the water status and light environment of leaves was altered prior to sampling. Although the magnesium concentration supporting the maximum rate of initial activity in soybean extracts was similar in the two assays, substantial differences of initial activity were observed at sub-optimal concentrations of magnesium. At low magnesium concentrations reaction rates in the spectrophotometric assay exhibited an initial phase of non-linearity which subsequently gave way to a linear rate. In contrast, reaction rates at low magnesium were linear from the time of initiation in the radiometric assay. Inclusion of EDTA in the reaction medium did, however, induce non-linear rates in the radiometric assay. The pre-addition of RUBP to extract immediately prior to dilution into the reaction medium did not eliminate the non-linearity in either assay system. The significance of these observations is discussed briefly in relation to the use of the spectrophotometric assay.

Notes: Abstract Water vapor was added differentially to the gas streams entering the cells of three makes of differential infrared carbon dioxide analysers. Analyser deflections were compared with those expected from dilution of the carbon dioxide by the additional gas. Tests were made at 0, 365, and 730 cm3 m−3 concentrations of carbon dioxide, and with the dewpoint in one cell of the analysers held constant at 15, 20, or 25°C. None of the analysers always responded in the ways predicted from dilution. The results showed that errors of a few cm3 m−3 could occur in estimates of carbon dioxide differentials using the theoretical correction for dilution. Furthermore the amount of error varied with the carbon dioxide range, the difference in water content, and in some cases the dewpoint range.

Notes: Abstract Rapidly responding gas.analyzers have simplified the monitoring of oxygen uptake $$\left( {\dot V_{O_2 } } \right)$$ in the clinical exercise laboratory. An incremental, exhaustive, upright exercise test can be safely used to determine the, plateau in oxygen uptake during exercise, ormaximal $$\dot V_{O_2 } \left( {\dot V_{O_2 } \max } \right)$$ , in patients with chronic cardiac or circulatory failure. We define $$\dot V_{O_2 } \max $$ in these patients as an increase in $$\dot V_{O_2 } $$ of less than 1 ml/min/kg despite an increment in work load. The value for $$\dot V_{O_2 } \max $$ indicates the patient's aerobic capacity; it also predicts the maximal cardiac output during exercise and therefore serves as an estimate of cardiac reserve and of the severity of cardiac or circulatory failure. Symptom-limited $$\dot V_{O_2 } $$ during exercise, termedmaximum oxygen uptake but more appropriatelypeak $$\dot V_{O_2 } $$ , bears no relationship to $$\dot V_{O_2 } \max $$ . The two terms should not be used interchangeably.
