    Notes: The ground-water geochemistry of glacial drift and bedrock of selected areas of New England, New York, and Pennsylvania differs considerably among the areas as a result of differences in bedrock geology. The New England study area is underlain primarily by feldspathic rock, large areas of New York are underlain primarily by carbonate and terrigenous sedimentary rock and some evaporite deposits, and glaciated areas of Pennsylvania are underlain primarily by clastic sedimentary rock with minor carbonate rocks. Mean concentrations of most solutes are greatest in the New York area and least in the New England area.In New England, the ground-water geochemistry results mainly from the reaction of CO2-charged water with feldspar and other primary silicates. Water in the New England bedrock is more highly evolved geochemically than water in the drift, presumably as a result of its longer residence time.In the New York area, the geochemistry of water in both types of aquifers results mainly from carbonate- mineral dissolution. Water in most glacial drift and bedrock is saturated with respect to calcite. In some parts of New York, the dissolution of evaporite minerals has a marked effect on the water chemistry of the bedrock.In most of the Pennsylvania area, the geochemistry of water in both types of aquifers indicates that, although carbonate minerals are the principal reactants, their influence on water chemistry is less than in New York. In parts of Pennsylvania, chemical differences between ground water from drift and ground water from bedrock are attributed to a higher proportion of reactive minerals in the drift than in the local bedrock as a result of glacial transport.

    Notes: Abstract This paper describes a technique for using twin element antennas (dipoles and slots) to increase the efficiency of antennas fabricated on electrically thick dielectric substrates. We present calculations which show that the efficiency of both the slot and dipole antennas can be increased by the proper spacing of elements placed broadside to each other. We consider the use of substrates that are odd integral multiples of a quarter of a dielectric wavelength thick and give results for an ε=4 substrate with thicknesses of one, three, and five quarter wavelengths. These thicknesses can be used when working at millimeter wave frequencies and yield substrate dimensions which can be handled and processed easily, while still yielding radiation-to-air efficiencies of about 70%. We also show calculated beam patterns for the elements which appear to be suitable for imaging array applications.

    Notes: Abstract Biodegradation tests were conducted on solidified waste forms containing ion exchange resins contaminated with high levels of radioactive nuclides. These tests were part of a program to test waste forms in accordance with the U.S. NRC Branch Technical Position on Waste Forms. Small waste forms were manufactured using two different solidification agents, Portland Type I–II cement and vinyl ester-styrene (VES). Ion exchange material was taken from a filter system which had been used to remove radionuclides from highly contaminated water. As specified by NRC, the waste forms were evaluated for their resistance to biological degradation using the G21 and G22 procedures of the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM). Results showed that microbial growth can be supported by the VES waste forms. The particular organisms used in the tests did not grow in the presence of the cement waste forms. It is also shown that the ASTM tests specified in the Technical Position are not suitable for the use intended. A different testing methodology is recommended which would provide direct verification of waste form integrity.
