Notes: Gold films were deposited on quartz-crystal microbalances by decomposing C7H7F6O2Au (dimethyl gold hexafluoroacetylacetonate) with 2–10-keV Xe+, Kr+, Ar+, Ne+, or He+ ion beams. The number of molecules decomposed per incident ion (i.e., the total decomposition yield) was determined as a function of ion mass and energy. The total decomposition yield increases with increasing ion mass and ion energy, and is approximately proportional to the nuclear stopping power. A binary collision model and a thermal spike model are developed that relate the energy deposited by the ion, at the substrate surface, to the total number of molecules decomposed. Both models predict total decomposition yields that are in reasonable agreement with the experimental measurements; however, the variation of total yield with changes in ion mass and energy are best described by the binary collision model. The success of both models demonstrates that the energy deposited into the substrate surface through the ion-solid interaction is responsible for the decomposition of adsorbed molecules.

Notes: The role of fine structure in reactions without barriers in the potential-energy surface is examined in general, and calculations are carried out for the specific case of O+OH→H+O2. The long-range Hamiltonian, including electrostatic (dipole–quadrupole and quadrupole–quadrupole) and spin-oribt interactions, is expressed in the asymptotic (separated species) basis for the 18 doubly degenerate states correlating to ground-state reactants O(3P2,1,0)+OH(2Π3/2,1/2). Adiabatic potential-energy surfaces are determined by diagonalization of the long-range Hamiltonian. The adiabaticity of the reaction has been analyzed using general considerations about nonadiabatic processes and confirmed by direct integration of the coupled equations. The half collision through the coupling region is found to be predominantly adiabatic for the state correlating to reaction. Single-surface reaction cross sections and rate constants have been obtained using the adiabatic capture, infinite-order sudden approximation method. Our results indicate that the reaction is probably fast even at very low temperatures. The effect of reagent rotation on the reaction cross section is also discussed.

Notes: Purpose The purpose of the study was to learn the effect of changes in the articulator settings on the cusp angles during working, nonworking, and protrusive movements; the purpose was also to determine the ability of the coordinate measuring machine to measure the movements.Materials and Methods The condylar angles and the anterior guide angles on a Hanau 96H2 articulator (Teledyne Hanau Corp, Buffalo, NY) were varied; 432 working, nonworking, and protrusive cusp angles were measured at the first molar by a coordinate measuring machine. Results The data from the coordinate measuring machine was used to produce formulas. The formulas were used to calculate the working, nonworking, and protrusive cusp angles that will occur as a result of 72 different articulator settings. Conclusions The coordinate measuring machine is useful for making measurements of articulator movements. Additional research may measure the movements of other articulators or compare articulators (such as the arcon and nonarcon).

Notes: Alpha and beta carotene, provitamin A activity, dehydroascorbic acid, L-ascorbic acid and total ascorbic acid content of “jalapeño,”“bell,” long green/red “chile,”“serrano” and “yellow wax” peppers (Cupsicum annuum L.) at green and red stages of maturity were determined by HPLC. Effects of thermal processing on vitamin A and C retention in “jalapeno” peppers was also determined. Provitamin A activity ranged from 27.3 to 501.9 Retinol Equivalents (RE/100g). Ascorbic acid concentration ranged from 76.1 to 243.1 (mg/100g). Provitamin A activity and ascorbic acid content increased with maturity in all cultivars. Thermal processing of “jalapeño” cultivars resulted in a 25% decrease of total provitamin A activity and a 75% decrease in total ascrobic acid.

Notes: Abstract We report the cloning of a cDNA and two corresponding β-globin genes of the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) as well as two genes for α-globins. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the cDNA shows that the predicted β-globin peptide comprises 148 amino acids with a calculated molecular mass of 16,127 Da and an overall amino acid similarity of 40–50% to higher vertebrates and 60–90% to fish sequences. The study of the genomic organization of α- and β-globin genes shows that, as is the case in Xenopus, the salmon genes are adjacent. Two sets of linked α- and β-globin genes were isolated and restriction-enzyme polymorphisms indicate that they belong to two distinct loci, possibly as a result of the salmon tetraploidy. In each locus the α- and β-globin genes are oriented 3′ to 3′ relative to each other with the RNA coding sequences located on opposite DNA strands. This is the first evidence for this type of arrangement found for globin genes. Moreover, while the linkage found in salmon and Xenopus supports the hypothesis of an initial tandem duplication of a globin ancestor gene, our results raise the question of the actual original orientation of the duplicated genes.

Notes: Summary Three cases of fracture of the lumbar ring apophysis representing type I, II, and III are described in detail and the natural history of these fractures is discussed. The symptoms of apophyseal fractures are usually low back pain, sciatica, tension signs, and neurological deficits, thus imitating the symptoms of lumbar disc herniation. Plain radiography and magnetic resonance are often inconclusive and computed tomography is essential for the true diagnosis. An explanation of the different types of fractures, based on the osteogenesis of the human vertebra, is proposed. Recognition of these fractures is essential for proper planing of surgery, and apophyseal ring fractures must be suspected when children and young adults show signs of lumbar disc herniation.

Notes: Summary In vitro activation of human granulocytes leads to altered expression of distinct surface antigens. Compared with the changes observed with classic activating reagents such as the phorbol ester PMA similar, but less pronounced alterations of surface antigen expression were observed upon granulocyte activation with human recombinant granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (hrGM-CSF). In particular, stimulation with hrGM-CSF is followed by an enhanced expression of the complement receptors CD35 (CR1) and CD11b (CR3) while the low affinity Fc-γ receptor CD16 (FcRIII) is downregulated. In order to investigate whether there are similar effects under in vivo conditions, we studied the granulocytes from patients undergoing rhGM-CSF therapy before, during, and after treatment. We found a marked increase in CD35 (CR1) and CD11b (CR3) expression and a substantial decrease or even loss of CD16 (FcRIII) on these granulocytes. These changes correlated well with our in vitro data and occurred extremely rapidly after therapy onset. Furthermore, therapy monitoring using ratios calculated by the mean fluorescence channel numbers of CR and FcRIII stainings may combine the advantage of high sensitivity with high reproducibility as a result of the contrasting change in CR and FcRIII expression during granulocyte activation. Being nonparametric values, such ratios are not influenced by individual flow cytometry standardization. Taken together, these activation-associated changes of surface receptor expression and especially of CR over FcRIII ratios are useful parameters for monitoring the in vivo effects of rhGM-CSF.

Notes: Abstract A method for the separation of structure functions in (e, e′ p) experiments is proposed, which is an extension of the traditional Rosenbluth-type techniques of [1,2]. In our approach, we use a very flexible Ansatz to describe the structure functions within an extended kinematical regionG and determine its free parameters with a x2 minimization. The procedure is tested by pseudo data (12C(e, e′p)11Bg.s.) in the quasi-free region.

Notes: Summary The clinical and biochemical characteristics of type III hyperlipoproteinemia are described in 64 patients (35 males and 29 females). Homozygosity for apolipoprotein E2, the presence of an abnormally cholesterol-rich very low density lipoprotein fraction (β-VLDL) and an elevated ratio of very low density lipoprotein cholesterol to plasma triglycerides (〉0.3; normal ratio about 0.2) were the basis for the diagnosis. Mean serum cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations at the first visit in the clinic were 426 ± 221 and 719 ±996 mg/dl, respectively. The mean age at diagnosis of the disorder was 49 years in males and 53 years in females. There was a high prevalence of obesity (72%), xanthomas (42%), and atherosclerosis (39%), especially peripheral vascular disease (31%). Early and correct diagnosis of this familial lipoprotein disorder seems necessary because of the prompt and beneficial response to therapeutic interventions.
