    Description / Table of Contents: This monography attempts to generalize available data on the pecularities of the environment and ecosystems of the Franz Josef Land archipelago and adjacent shelf regions. A review of historical development of the region, up-to-data hydrometeorological situation and ice conditions in the straits is given. Literature and original data on vegetation distribution over archipelago islands and ont he ornithfauna are analysed. Both structure and production properties of benthal and plagial communities of the FJL maritime zone are described; information on ichthyofauna, sea mammals (especially Atlantic walrus), parasite life-histories under Arctic conditions are considered. One chapter is devoted to analysis of anthropogenous influence on the FLJ ecosystems and to basing of proposition about cration of the national park in the archipelago region. The book contains vast material collected by Russian and foreign scientists during marine expeditions organized by the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute and at the International Biological Station "Bukhta Tikhaya" (Hooker Island). - This book may be interesting for wide range of scientists connected with the Arctic: geologists, hydrometeorologists, ecologists, different biologists, and all peoples connected with problems of nature protection
