Notizen: The novel design of a heated stage (miniature dye bath) for use with an inverted fluorescence microscope is described. The heated stage allows investigation of wool dyeings to be followed in situ in real time. The photometer attachment of the microscope allows for quantitative analysis. The progress of the dyeing of wool with a fluorescent whitening agent and a fluorescent dye have been monitored in real time. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The typical configuration for inductive write/magnetoresistive read heads used in hard disk applications involves a shared pole (shield) between the write transducer and the read transducer. The shared pole forms the leading pole of the write portion of the head. The write track width is primarily determined by the width of the trailing pole, however, the leading pole geometry has an important influence on track-edge writing effects and, therefore, on embedded servo system performance. This effect is simulated for shared pole, trimmed pole, and, for comparison, conventional inductive head pole geometries. The merits of each geometry and impact of side writing on servo is discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract Scoliosis is the most common skeletal abnormality in neurofibromatosis, occurring in at least 10% of patients [1, 2]. Spinal MR is commonly used to assess the intraspinal contents prior to surgery for scoliosis. We report a case of neurofibromatosis I with dysplastic scoliosis which demonstrated an extradural mass on MR. Subsequent CT scan showed the presence of dislocation of the adjacent costovertebral articulation, with herniation of the rib head into the spinal canal.

Notizen: Abstract. G292 osteoblastic cells were cultured in dishes made with a flexible base of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and stretched (∼1% strain level) continuously for 48 hours. Patch-clamp recording techniques were then used to monitor single channel currents of mechanosensitive ion channels in these cells. To stimulate mechanosensitive channels, we applied suction to the membrane, expressed as −cm Hg, directly through the patch pipette. GigaOhm seals were obtained on a total of 33 osteoblasts that contained a high-conductance (∼180 pS) mechanosensitive channel, all in the cell attached configuration. Of these, 18 were obtained from cells that had been stretched for either 1 (n = 6), 24 (n = 4), or 48 (n = 8) hours, and 15 were obtained in control (nonstretched) cells at either 1 (n = 2), 24 (n = 5), or 48 (n = 8) hours. For unstrained cells, applied pressures ranging from −1 to −5 cm Hg increased the probability of channel opening (Popen) from 0.05 ± 0.01 (mean + SEM) to 0.12 ± 0.07. By contrast, for the same values of applied pressure in stretched cells, Popen ranged from 0.06 ± 0.01 to 0.49 ± 0.15. Our results suggest that intrinsic properties of mechanosensitive ion channels in the G292 osteoblastic cell may be modulated by continuous mechanical loading of the cell itself.

Notizen: Abstract. We report a case of complete descending colon obstruction due to diverticular disease that was initially managed by endoscopic stent placement followed by single-stage left colectomy with primary anastomosis. Traditional management of complete large bowel obstruction, whether due to benign or malignant disease, most often requires a temporary colostomy because of unprepared colon. In this case, preparation of the colon was accomplished by successful stenting of the benign colonic obstruction. We believe that endoscopic colonic stenting is an effective way of avoiding a temporary colostomy in patients with complete large bowel obstruction.

Notizen: Abstract  The pharmacokinetics and toxicity of liposomal amikacin in a patient treated for advanced pulmonary multidrug-resistant tuberculosis are described. A dose of 20 mg/kg of liposomal amikacin was given on alternate days for 14 days and weekly thereafter for 9 weeks, for a total dose of 20.1 g in 17 divided doses. Accumulation occurred with alternate-day, but not weekly, dosing. The serum levels of amikacin obtained with the liposomal preparation were considerably greater than those obtained with the conventional preparation (range, 81–457 mg/l vs. 4.1–37.7 mg/l). The liposomal amikacin was well tolerated and led to clinical improvement, but it failed to achieve a microbiological response. The patient's sputum remained smear- and culture-positive during the treatment period with liposomal amikacin and for 9 months afterward.

Notizen: Abstract New insights into the mechanism of hunger and satiety provide a new approach to an old problem of weight regulation. It is known that the sense of olfaction via this olfactory-satiety feedback loop has a powerful and immediate effect on appetite regulation. The goals of this present study were to test the association of the inhalation of the specially formulated hedonic scents and weight reduction in a double blind, randomized, controlled study. This study tests the hypothesis that inhalation of specially formulated, positive-hedonic scents can function in the acute regulation of appetite and contribute to satiety. We also test the hypothesis that the inhalation of positive hedonic scents can lead to sustained weight loss. Our study conclusively proves in a randomized, controlled, double-blind fashion that the inhalation of specially formulated scents are effective in appetite reduction, squelching food cravings and weight loss without any conscious dieting or exercising.

Notizen: Surface properties of Kapton® were analysed after different exposures to ground state fast atomic oxygen (FAO) and vacuum ultraviolet radiation in the atomic oxygen beam facility at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and contact angle measurements were used to characterize the chemical and physical changes to the surfaces of the materials analysed. The most important changes in the surface chemistry of Kapton induced by the various exposures to FAO were oxidative degradation of the polymer and substantial changes in supermolecular organization and morphology of the surface layer. A very weak adhesion of the rough top layer to the original Kapton has been observed after an atomic oxygen irradiation with a total fluence of 1.3 × 1021 atoms cm-2, which is comparable to some low earth orbit (LEO) exposures. Comparison was made between pristine samples and the cleaned surface of samples that had been exposed in the atomic oxygen beam facility and in the LEO environment. An ageing effect was observed in the surface layer of exposed samples after a prolonged storage. For several polymer materials, a correlation was found between the erosion yield when exposed to FAO and the dispersion component of the surface tension of the pristine material.
