    Publication Date: 2024-01-20
Description: In the first season of drilling, the Cape Roberts Project (CRP) recovered one drillcore (CRP-l) from Roberts Ridge in western McMurdo Sound, Ross Sea, Antarctica Diatom biostratigraphy places the upper six lithostratigraphic units (Units 1.1, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, and 4.1) of CRP-l (0.0 to 43.15 mbsf) within the Quaternary. Both non-marine and marine Quaternary diatoms occur in variable abundance in the Quaternary interval of CRP- 1 Biostratigraphic data resolve two Quaternary time slices or events within CRP-1. Marine diatom assemblages in Units 4.1 and 3.1 represent sedimentation within the diatom Actinocyclus ingens Zone (1.35 to 0.66 Ma). Further refinement of the age of Unit 3.l places deposition in the interval 1.15 to 0.75 Ma based on the common occurrence of Thalassiosira elliptipora and correlation to the Southern Ocean acme of this taxon The absence of ActiActinocyclus ingens and the presence ot Thalassiosira antarctica in Unit 2.2 require a younger zonal assignment for this interval, within the diatom Thalassiosira lentiginosa Zone (0.66 to 0.0 Ma). A new diatom species. Rouxia leventerae, is described from marine assemblages of Units 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, and 4.l. Lithostratigraphic Unit 3.1 (33.82 to 31.89 mbsf) is a bryozoan-dominated skeletal-carbonate facies. Low abundance of Fragilariopsis curta and Fragilariopsis cylindrus within this unit combined with the relatively high abundance of species associated with open water indicates deposition in waters that remained ice free for much or all of the year Diatom assemblages suggest carbonate deposition in Unit 3.1 is linked to a significant early Pleistocene event in McMurdo Sound, when elevated surface-water temperatures inhibited the formation of sea ice.

In:  Supplement to: Harwood, David M; Bohaty, Steven M; Scherer, Reed P (1998): Lower Miocene diatom biostratigraphy of the CRP-1 drillcore, McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Terra Antartica, 5(3), 499-514, hdl:10013/epic.28337.d001
    Publication Date: 2024-01-20
Description: Lower Miocene diatoms and other siliceous microfossils in the Cape Robcrts Project drillcore (CRP-l), Roberts Ridge, western McMurdo Sound, are documented. Diatom biostratigraphy, along with 87Sr/86Sr ratios from mollusk shells and 40Ar/39Ar data from volcanic materials, constrain the interpretation of the magnetic polarity stratigraphy and allows construction of an age model for CRP-1. Together, these records indicate an age span from to ~21.5 Ma at 147.69 mbsf (the bottom of the hole) to ~17.5 Ma at 43.15 mbsf (top of the lower Miocene interval). Important diatom datums identified in this drillcore are the FAD and LAD of Thalassiosira praefraga and the LAD of Cavitatus rectus. Variation in diatom abundance and assemblage composition through the lower Miocene reflects changes in depositional environment. There are intervals of repeated ice cover (floating or grounded) in the lower Miocene section of CRP-1, where diatom production was limited, and intervals where diatoms were growing in open, although at times shallow (〈35 m), marine seas. Relative numbers of planktic to benthic diatoms often parallel similar indices of water depth from sedimentologic and sequencestratigraphic interpretations. Approximately 70 diatom taxa, in addition to 2 silicoflagellate and 2 ebridian taxa, are reported. No radiolarians were encountered. Three tentative diatom biostratigraphic zones are introduced, though not formally named in this report. A Ross Sea diatom zonation for the lower Miocene to upper Eocene is under development, for future publication. The forthcoming zonation will incorporate diatom biostratigraphic information from CRP-l and CRP-2, and earlier stratigraphic drilling in McMurdo Sound, as well as magnetostratigraphically calibrated datums from the Southern Ocean.
