Description: Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) index is strongly correlated with vertically integrated transport carried by the Kuroshio through the East China Sea (ECS). Transport was determined from satellite altimetry calibrated with in situ data and its correlation with PDO index (0.76) is highest at zero lag. Total PDO-correlated transport variation carried by the ECS-Kuroshio and Ryukyu Current is about 4 Sv. In addition, PDO index is strongly negatively correlated, at zero lag, with NCEP wind-stress-curl over the central North Pacific at ECS latitudes. Sverdrup transport, calculated from wind-stress-curl anomalies, is consistent with the observed transport variations. Finally, PDO index and ECS-Kuroshio transport are each negatively correlated with Kuroshio Position Index in the Tokara Strait; this can be explained by a model in which Kuroshio path is steered by topography when transport is low and is inertially controlled when transport is high.

Description: ABSTRACT A series of shikonin derivatives, selectively acylated by various fluorinated carboxylic acids at the side chain of shikonin, were synthesized and their anticancer activity evaluated, in which eight compounds are reported for the first time. Among all the compounds tested, compound showed the most potent anticancer activity against B16-F10 (malignant melanoma cells), MG63 (human osteosarcoma cells), and A549 (lung cancer cells) with IC 50 0.39 ± 0.01, 0.72 ± 0.04 and 0.58 ± 0.02 µmol/L. Docking simulation of compound was carried out to position into a tubulin active site to determine the probable binding conformation. All the results suggested that compound may be a potential anticancer agent. Chirality 00:000–000, 2013 . © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Description: Purpose To evaluate a new formulation of manganese porphyrin as a potential gadolinium (Gd)-free extracellular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent for dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI of tumors. Materials and Methods A previously reported new contrast agent, MnTCP, was evaluated in six female tumor-bearing nude rats. MRI was performed on a 3 T clinical scanner 3 to 4 weeks after inoculation of breast tumor cells in the mammary fat pads. Gd-DTPA was injected intravenously, followed by injection of MnTCP at least 2 hours later (both at 0.05 mmol/kg). T 1 relaxation time measurements and DCE-MRI were performed. Results Enhancement and clearance patterns were visually similar between MnTCP and Gd-DTPA. However, relative R 1 increases in all 11 tumors were larger for MnTCP over 60 minutes postcontrast, the difference being significant as late as 20 minutes ( R 1post / R 1pre  = 1.42 ± 0.15 for MnTCP vs. 1.20 ± 0.08 for Gd-DTPA, P  〈 0.05). R 1 -related effects for MnTCP were largely reduced after 60 minutes ( R 1post / R 1pre  = 1.13 ± 0.07) and completely gone within 24 hours ( R 1post / R 1pre  = 0.97 ± 0.06). DCE-MRI revealed a consistently larger (1.5 to over 2-fold) peak enhancement and higher values of the steepest slope, time-to-peak, and AUC 60 in all tumors with MnTCP ( P  〈 0.01). Conclusion MnTCP is an alternative to extracellular Gd agents for tumor imaging, offering sensitive detection and rapid renal clearance. J. Magn. Reson. Imaging 2014 . © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc .

Description: The longitudinal Schottky spectra of a radio-frequency (RF) bunched and electron cooled 22 Ne 10+ ion beam at 70 MeV/u have been studied by a newly installed resonant Schottky pick-up at the experimental cooler storage ring (CSRe), at IMP. For an RF-bunched ion beam, a longitudinal momentum spread of Δ p / p = 1.6 × 10 −5 has been reached with less than 10 7 stored ions. The reduction of momentum spread compared with a coasting ion beam was observed from Schottky noise signal of the bunched ion beam. In order to prepare the future laser cooling experiment at the CSRe, the RF-bunching power was modulated at 25 th ,50 th and 75 th harmonic of the revolution frequency, effective bunching amplitudes were extracted from the Schottky spectrum analysis. Applications of Schottky noise for measuring beam lifetime with ultra-low intensity of ion beams are presented, and it is relevant to upcoming experiments o...

    Description: Two new natural products, i.e. , 1- O ,2- O -[(1 S ,2 S )-1-(3-acetyl-2,4,6-trihydroxyphenyl)-3-hydroxypropane-1,3-diyl]- β - D -glucopyranose (=tomentoside I; 1 ) and (3 β )-3-(acetyloxy)ferruginol 12-[6- O -(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxybenzoyl)- β - D -glucopyranoside] (=tomentoside II; 2 ), were isolated from the EtOH extract of the root of Anemone tomentosa , together with five known compounds. Their structures were characterized by means of spectroscopic methods, especially by 1 H-, 13 C-, and 2D-NMR and HR-MS, as well as by chemical methods and comparison with literature data.

Description: Enantiopure star-shaped FeIII4 clusters were constructed from simple chiral ligands. AC field frequency dependence and a hysteresis loop, very important features of SMMs, were observed at low temperature. CD spectra demonstrated that the chirality was transferred from the ligand to the coordination environment of Fe3+ ions. Description: Background: Tissue invasion and metastasis are acquired abilities of cancer and related to the death in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Emerging observations indicate that the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is associated with tumor progression and the generation of cells with cancer stem cells (CSCs) properties. Membrane Type 1 Matrix Metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP) is a cell surface proteinase, which is involved in degrading extracellular matrix components that can promote tumor invasion and cell migration. Methods: In the current study, we utilized SCC9 cells stably transfected with an empty vector (SCC9-N) or a vector encoding human MT1-MMP (SCC9-M) to study the role of MT1-MMP in EMT development. Results: Upon up-regulation of MT1-MMP, SCC9-M cells underwent EMT, in which they presented a fibroblast-like phenotype and had a decreased expression of epithelial markers (E-cadherin, cytokeratin18 and beta-catenin) and an increased expression of mesenchymal markers (vimentin and fibronectin). We further demonstrated that MT1-MMP-induced morphologic changes increased the level of Twist and ZEB, and were dependent on repressing the transcription of E-cadherin. These activities resulted in low adhesive, high invasive abilities of the SCC9-M cells. Furthermore, MT1-MMP-induced transformed cells exhibited cancer stem cell (CSC)-like characteristics, such as low proliferation, self-renewal ability, resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs and apoptosis, and expression of CSCs surface markers. Conclusions: In conclusion, our study indicates that overexpression of MT1-MMP induces EMT and results in the acquisition of CSC-like properties in SCC9 cells. Our growing understanding of the mechanism regulating EMT may provide new targets against invasion and metastasis in OSCC.
