    Beschreibung: Incorporation of boron into foraminiferal shells is thought to be primarily governed by the carbonate chemistry of the ambient seawater, suggesting that it can be reconstructed from B/Ca ratios. To this end, B/Ca ratios of the benthic foraminifer Planulina wuellerstorfi from South Atlantic core top samples have been analyzed using laser ablation−inductively coupled plasma−mass spectroscopy (LA-ICP-MS) to provide additional information on intratest trace element heterogeneity. Results show that boron is heterogeneously distributed within and between shells, with content variations of approximately ±43% displayed within a single shell. B/Ca is higher in the youngest chambers, opposite to the observed between-chamber variability of Mg/Ca. This may be explained by ontogenetic changes of physiological processes that increase the pH of the calcifying fluid and thus the borate concentration while decreasing Mg/Ca to promote calcification. Despite this heterogeneity, mean B/Ca ratios are positively correlated with the deepwater calcite saturation state (Δ[CO32–]), in line with previous studies. We apply this empirical relationship to reconstruct Δ[CO32–] for the late Pleistocene to Holocene using samples from a depth transect in the equatorial Atlantic. Reconstructed Δ[CO32–] values confirm previous studies suggesting that CaCO3-oversaturated North Atlantic Deep Water was reduced during glacial periods, whereas CaCO3-undersaturated Antarctic Bottom Water expanded vertically and propagated northwards. In summary, our data demonstrate that bulk B/Ca in P. wuellerstorfi reliably reflects variations in Δ[CO32–], despite the strong physiological control of boron incorporation.

    Beschreibung: Mg/Ca ratios of surface and subsurface dwelling foraminifera provide valuable information about the past temperature of the water column. Planktonic foraminifera calcify over a period of weeks to months. Therefore, the range of Mg/Ca temperatures obtained from single specimens potentially records seasonal temperature changes. We present solution-derived Mg/Ca ratios for single specimens of the planktonic foraminifera species Globigerinoides ruber (pink), Globigerinoides ruber (white), and Globorotalia inflata from a sediment trap off northwest Africa (20°45.6′N, 18°41.9′W). Cleaning of single specimens was achieved using a flow-through system in order to prevent sample loss. Mg/Ca ratios of surface dwelling G. ruber (pink) show strong seasonality linked to sea surface temperature. Mg/Ca ratios of G. ruber (white) do not show such seasonality. Subsurface dwelling G. inflata flux is largest during the main upwelling season, but Mg/Ca ratios reflect annual temperatures at intermediate water depths. The sediment trap time series suggests that changes in the range of Mg/Ca ratios exhibited by single specimens of G. ruber (pink) and G. inflata from the sedimentary record should provide information on the past temperature range under which these species calcified. Statistical analysis suggests detectable changes in the Mg/Ca range are ≥0.80 mmol/mol (G. ruber (pink)) and ≥0.34 mmol/mol (G. inflata). For G. ruber (pink), such changes would indicate changes in the seasonal sea surface temperature range 〉4°C or a shift in the main calcification and reproductive period. For G. inflata, such changes would indicate 〉1.7°C changes in the thermocline temperature or a change in the depth habitat.

    Beschreibung: The ocean plays a major role in the global carbon cycle, and attempts to reconstruct past changes in the marine carbonate system are increasing. The speciation of dissolved uranium is sensitive to variations in carbonate system parameters, and previous studies have shown that this is recorded in the uranium-to-calcium ratio (U/Ca) of the calcite shells of planktonic foraminifera. Here we test whether U/Ca ratios of deep-sea benthic foraminifera are equally suited as an indicator of the carbonate system. We compare U/Ca in two common benthic foraminifer species (Planulina wuellerstorfi and Cibicidoides mundulus) from South Atlantic core top samples with the calcite saturation state (Δ[CO32−] = [CO32−]in situ − [CO32−]sat) of the ambient seawater and find significant negative correlations for both species. Compared with planktonic foraminifera, the sensitivity of U/Ca in benthic foraminifera to changes in Δ[CO32−] is about 1 order of magnitude higher. Although Δ[CO32−] exerts the dominant control on the average foraminiferal U/Ca, the intertest and intratest variability indicates the presence of additional factors forcing U/Ca.

    Beschreibung: Two gravity cores retrieved off NW Africa at the border of arid and subtropical environments (GeoB 13602-1 and GeoB 13601-4) were analyzed to extract records of Late Quaternary climate change and sediment export. We apply End Member (EM) unmixing to 350 acquisition curves of isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM). Our approach enables to discriminate rock magnetic signatures of aeolian and fluvial material, to determine biomineralization and reductive diagenesis. Based on the occurrence of pedogenically formed magnetic minerals in the fluvial and aeolian EMs, we can infer that goethite formed in favor to hematite in more humid climate zones. The diagenetic EM dominates in the lower parts of the cores and within a thin near-surface layer probably representing the modern Fe**2+/Fe**3+ redox boundary. Up to 60% of the IRM signal is allocated to a biogenic EM underlining the importance of bacterial magnetite even in siliciclastic sediments. Magnetosomes are found well preserved over most of the record, indicating suboxic conditions. Temporal variations of the aeolian and fluvial EMs appear to faithfully reproduce and support trends of dry and humid conditions on the continent. The proportion of aeolian to fluvial material was dramatically higher during Heinrich Stadials, especially during Heinrich Stadial 1. Dust export from the Arabian-Asian corridor appears to vary contemporaneous to increased dust fluxes on the continental margin of NW Africa emphasizing that melt-water discharge in the North Atlantic had an enormous impact on atmospheric dynamics.

    Beschreibung: We present a suite of new high-resolution records (0-135 ka) representing pulses of aeolian, fluvial, and biogenic sedimentation along the Senegalese continental margin. A multiproxy approach based on rock magnetic, element, and color data was applied on three cores enclosing the present-day northern limit of the ITCZ. A strong episodic aeolian contribution driven by stronger winds and dry conditions and characterized by high hematite and goethite input was revealed north of 13°N. These millennial-scale dust fluxes are synchronous with North Atlantic Heinrich stadials. Fluvial clay input driven by the West African monsoon predominates at 12°N and varies at Dansgaard-Oeschger time scales while marine productivity is strongly enhanced during the African humid periods and marine isotope stage 5. From latitudinal signal variations, we deduce that the last glacial ITCZ summer position was located between core positions at 12°26' and 13°40'N. Furthermore, this work also shows that submillennial periods of aridity over northwest Africa occurred more frequently and farther south than previously thought.

    Beschreibung: Grain-size, terrigenous element and rock magnetic remanence data of Quaternary marine sediments retrieved at the NW African continental margin off Gambia (gravity core GeoB 13602-1, 13°32.71' N, 17°50.96'W) were jointly analyzed by end-member (EM) unmixing methods to distinguish and budget past terrigenous fluxes. We compare and cross-validate the identified single-parameter EM systems and develop a numerical strategy to calculate associated multi-parameter EM properties. One aeolian and two fluvial EMs were found. The aeolian EM is much coarser than the fluvial EMs and is associated with a lower goethite/hematite ratio, a higher relative concentration of magnetite and lower Al/Si and Fe/K ratios. Accumulation rates and grain sizes of the fluvial sediment appear to be primarily constrained by shore distance (i.e., sea-level fluctuations) and to a lesser extent by changes in hinterland precipitation. High dust fluxes occurred during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and during Heinrich Stadials (HS) while the fluvial input remained unchanged. Our approach reveals that the LGM dust fluxes were ~7 times higher than today's. However, by far the highest dust accumulation occurred during HS 1 (~300 g m**-2 yr** -1), when dust fluxes were ~80 fold higher than today. Such numbers have not yet been reported for NW Africa, and emphasize strikingly different environmental conditions during HSs. They suggest that deflation rate and areal extent of HSs dust sources were much larger due to retreating vegetation covers. Beyond its regional and temporal scope, this study develops new, in principle, generally applicable strategies for multi-method end-member interpretation, validation and flux budgeting calibration.
