    Description: An ensemble of new, high-resolution records of surface ocean hydrography from the Indian-Atlantic oceanic gateway, south of Africa, demonstrates recurrent and high-amplitude salinity oscillations in the Agulhas Leakage area during the penultimate glacial-interglacial cycle. A series of millennial-scale salinification events, indicating strengthened salt leakage into the South Atlantic, appear to correlate with abrupt changes in the North Atlantic climate and Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). This interhemispheric coupling, which plausibly involved changes in the Hadley Cell and midlatitude westerlies that impacted the interocean transport at the tip of Africa, suggests that the Agulhas Leakage acted as a source of negative buoyancy for the perturbed AMOC, possibly aiding its return to full strength. Our finding points to the Indian-to-Atlantic salt transport as a potentially important modulator of the AMOC during the abrupt climate changes of the Late Pleistocene.

    Description: Fine-scale, paired Mg/Ca-d18O profiles (Globigerinoides ruber white, sensu lato) from the San Lázaro Basin (SLB) at 25°N in the Northeast Pacific reveal a transition from a predominant presence of tropical/subtropical waters during the last glacial termination (T1) to an increasing influence of fresh and cold California Current waters toward the Holocene. Changing atmospheric circulation patterns over the Northeast Pacific in step with the demise of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets and/or with a shift from El Niño- to La Niña-like conditions toward the Holocene are prime candidates to explain this water mass change. d18OSW-IVC increases of ~0.5-0.7 per mil during the Younger Dryas (YD) and Heinrich stadial 1 (HS1) at the SLB are observed in a number of d18OSW-IVC records from the tropical Pacific, more directly influenced by changes in the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Conditioning by ITCZ migration of the tropical Pacific Ocean towards salinity increase during YD and HS1, and the subsequent advection of those water masses as far north as 25°N likely accounted for the reconstructed hydrographical changes at the SLB. A larger influence of tropical water masses as far north as 25°N plausibly contributed to changes in the atmospheric moisture transports to western North America and affected the regional hydrological cycle across T1. Finally, the fine-scale resolution of our d18OSW-IVC record allows pinpointing a shift from relative salty to fresh surface conditions at ~16.2 ka, signaling that the two-phase structure of HS1 is plausibly a ubiquitous feature of the northern tropical to extratropical ocean-atmosphere dynamics.

    Description: Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) recorded by alkenones and oxygen isotopes in the Alboran basin are used here to describe, at an unprecedented fine temporal resolution, the present interglaciation (PIG, initiated at 11.7 ka BP), the last interglaciation (LIG, onset approximately at 129 ka) and respective deglaciations. Similarities and dissimilarities in the progression of these periods are reviewed in comparison with ice cores and stalagmites. Cold spells coeval with the Heinrich events (H) described in the North Atlantic include multi-decadal scale oscillations not previously obvious (up to 4 °C in less than eight centuries within the stadials associated with H1 and H11, ca 133 ka and 17 ka respectively). These abrupt oscillations precede the accumulation of organic rich layers deposited when perihelion moves from alignment with NH spring equinox to the summer solstice, a reference for deglaciations. Events observed during the last deglaciation at 17 ka, 14.8 ka and 11.7 ka are reminiscent of events occurred during the penultimate deglaciation at ca 136 ka, 132 ka and 129 ka, respectively. The SST trend during the PIG is no more than 2 °C (from 20 °C to 18 °C; up to -0.2 °C/ka). The trend is steeper during the LIG, i.e. up to a 5 °C change from the early interglaciation to immediately before the glacial inception (from 23 °C to 18 °C; up to -0.4 °C/ka). Events are superimposed upon a long term trend towards colder SSTs, beginning with SST maxima followed by temperate periods until perihelion aligned with the NH autumn equinox (before ca 5.3 ka for the PIG and 121 ka for the LIG). A cold spell of around eight centuries at 2.8 ka during the PIG was possibly mimicked during the LIG at ca 118 ka by a SST fall of around 1 °C in a millennium. These events led interglacial SST to stabilise at around 18 °C. The glacial inception, barely evident at the beginning ca 115 ka (North Atlantic event C25, after perihelion passage in the NH winter solstice), culminated with a SST drop of at least 2 °C in two millennia (event C24, ca 111 ka). The Little Ice Age (0.7 ka) also occurred after the latest perihelion passage in the NH winter solstice and could be an example of how a glacial pre-inception event following an interglaciation might be.

    Description: Past water column stratification can be assessed through comparison of the d18O of different planktonic foraminiferal species. The underlying assumption is that different species form their shells simultaneously, but at different depths in the water column. We evaluate this assumption using a sediment trap time-series of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (s) and Globigerina bulloides from the NW North Atlantic. We determined fluxes, d18O and d13C of shells from two size fractions to assess size-related effects on shell chemistry and to better constrain the underlying causes of isotopic differences between foraminifera in deep-sea sediments. Our data indicate that in the subpolar North Atlantic differences in the seasonality of the shell flux, and not in depth habitat or test size, determine the interspecies Delta d18O. N. pachyderma (s) preferentially forms from early spring to late summer, whereas the flux ofG. bulloides peaks later in the season and is sustained until autumn. Likewise, seasonality influences large and small specimens differently, with large shells settling earlier in the season. The similarity of the seasonal d18O patterns between the two species indicates that they calcify in an overlapping depth zone close to the surface. However, their d13C patterns are markedly different (〉1 per mil). Both species have a seasonally variable offset from d13CDIC that appears to be governed primarily by temperature, with larger offsets associated with higher temperatures. The variable offset from d13CDIC implies that seasonality of the flux affects the fossil d13C signal, which has implications for reconstruction of the past oceanic carbon cycle.
