    Description: The Nordic Seas are the primary location where the warm waters of the North Atlantic Current densify to form North Atlantic Deep Water, which plays a key part in the modern Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. The formation of dense water in the Nordic Seas and Arctic Ocean and resulting ocean circulation changes were probably driven by and contributed to the regional and global climate of the last glacial maximum (LGM). Here we map the source and degree of mixing of deep water in the Nordic Seas and through the Arctic Gateway (Yermak Plateau) over the past 35 thousand years using neodymium isotopes (εNd) measured on authigenic phases in deep-sea sediments with a high spatial and temporal resolution. We find that a large-scale reorganization of deep-water formation in the Nordic Seas took place between the LGM (23–18 thousand years ago) and the rapid climate shift that accompanied the subsequent deglaciation (18–10 thousand years ago). We show that homogeneous εNd signatures across a wide range of sites support LGM deep-water formation in the Nordic Seas. In contrast, during the deglaciation, disparate and spatially variable εNd values are observed leading to the conclusion that deep-water formation may have been reduced during this time.

    Description: Two deep-sea cores, GIK13891 and GIK13291, retrieved off Mauretania (NW Africa) from the top of a ca. 250 m high seamount and from the seamount's foot were studied. Planktonic foraminifera oxygen isotope records in conjunction with 14C ages in the upper core sections were used to establish a stratigraphy. Sedimentological studies of both cores focused on the occurrence and abundance of giant grains of up to 1500 µm. Three possible transport ways for those giant grains are being discussed: a) transport by turbidity currents b) erosion from the seamount top c) eolian delivery. The sedimentological results, including SEM pictures, point mainly to erosion and additional eolian delivery of the giant grains.

    Description: Ocean sediment records document abrupt changes in glacial-to-deglacial circulation and mixing of the ocean, recorded as changes in 14C reservoir ages of surface waters. Here we present 14C-based high-resolution age records of four sediment cores from the western and eastern continental margins of the South Pacific. Global correlation of centennial-scale ocean variability requires centennial-scale precision in age control which can be established by means of 14C plateau tuning. The accuracy and precision of plateau tuning are now confirmed in two sediment cores off Chile; in one core by independent land-based age control of four tephra layers, in a second core by a suite of peak glacial sediment varves. The results from the cores support the model of a bipolar seesaw at the onset of fast deglacial Antarctic warming, moreover, they show that the Antarctic Cold Reversal immediately preceded the onset of the Younger Dryas cold spell. During peak glacial times, high reservoir ages reaching up to ~1500 yr and paired ice-rafted debris and sediment laminations may reflect seasonal sea ice and/or a melt water lid at high latitudes off southern Chile, likewise east of Southern New Zealand.

    Description: Authigenic neodymium isotopes measured on bulk sediment leachates and mixed planktic foraminifera from deep-sea sediment cores from the Nordic Seas and Arctic Ocean dated from the last glacial to modern. Data was used to reconstruct past changes in ocean circulation in this region. Neodymium isotope data was collected on a Thermo Fischer Neptune Plus Multicollector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS).
