Beschreibung: Zooplankton grazing onphytoplankton promotes the release of particulate and dissolved organic matter (DOM) into the water column and therefore plays a key role in organic matter cycling in aquatic systems. Prokaryotes are the main DOM consumers in the ocean by actively remineralizing and transforming it, contributing to its molecular diversification. To explore the molecular composition of zooplankton‐derived DOM and its bioavailability to natural prokaryotic communities, the DOM generated by a mixed zooplankton community in the coastal Atlantic off Spain was used as substrate for a natural prokaryotic community and monitored over a ~ 5‐d incubation experiment. The molecular composition of solid‐phase extracted DOM was characterized via Fourier‐transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. After ~ 4 d in the zooplankton‐derived DOM amended incubation, the prokaryotic community demonstrated a 17‐fold exponential increase in cell number. The prokaryotic growth resulted in a reduction in bulk dissolved organic carbon concentration and the zooplankton‐derived DOM was considerably transformed at molecular and bulk elemental levels over the incubation period. The C : N ratio (calculated from the obtained molecular formulae) increased while the functional diversity decreased over the incubation time. In addition, molecular indices pointed to a reduced bioavailability of DOM at the end of the experiment. These findings show that zooplankton excreta are a source of labile organic matter that is quickly metabolized by the prokaryotic community. Therefore, a fraction of carbon is shunted from transfer to secondary consumers similarly to the viral shunt, suggesting that the zooplankton–prokaryotic interactions play an important role in the ocean's carbon cycle.

Beschreibung: The values of carbon and nitrogen content, and natural abundance of stable isotopes were measured in mesozooplankton samples from two shelf stations off A Coruña (NW Spain) at monthly frequency during 2000-2001 and 2006-2009. The objective was to compare the composition values of unpreserved with those of preserved samples. Samples were collected approximately at noon with double oblique hauls with Juday-Bogorov or Bongo nets (50 cm diameter, 200 µm mesh-size) from the surface to 50 m depth or near bottom (shallower station). Each sample was divided with a Folsom splitter in two aliquots: one was dried immediately (50°C, 48 h) and the other was preserved in formalin (borate-buffered formaldehyde, 4% final concentration). The dried samples were grinded and analysed using an isotope-ratio mass spectrometer coupled to an elemental analyser within one year of collection. The preserved samples were stored for up to 10 years before analysis as with the unpreserved samples. In addition the contributions of copepods to total dry weight biomass was estimated from species abundance values determined by microscopical examination and the values and factors from the literature (Wiebe, 1988; Bode et al., 2012; Acuña et al., 2014).

Beschreibung: Zooplankton sampled approximately at monthly intervals between April 1988 and December 2016 at Station E2CO (A Coruña, NW Spain) with double-oblique tows of a 50-cm diameter Juday-Bogorov plankton net with 250 μm (until 1997) or 200 μm (from 1997 onwards) mesh size. The net was equipped with a General Oceanic Flowmeter for the calculation of water filtered and a depth recorder. All samples were collected between 10:00 and 14:00 o'clock (local time) and were preserved in 2−4% sodium borate-buffered formaldehyde. Sub-samples were taken to estimate total zooplankton abundances (in ind × m−3) by direct examination using a stereo microscope, and biomass (in μg DW × L−1) by weighting dried aliquots (50 ºC, 48 h). Species names referenced to the Word Register of Marine Species (last access: June 2019). Zooplankton identification and counts were made by M.T. Álvarez-Ossorio (until 2015), E. Rey and M.A. Louro (2016). These series are part of the long-term observational project RADIALES (Instituto Español de Oceanografía, IEO, Spain).

Beschreibung: Carbon export (from the epipelagic towards the mesopelagic zone) and sequestration (from the mesopelagic towards the bathypelagic zone) in the ocean are reviewed. Particulate organic carbon (POC) flux, and active flux due to migrant zooplankton and micronekton are shown from the epipelagic to the mesopelagic zone, and from the latter to the bathypelagic zone. Values towards the meso- and bathypelagic zones are compared in oligotrophic and productive systems. Zooplankton and prokaryote respiration in the meso- and bathypelagic zones of the ocean are also reviewed for oligotrophic and productive systems. Values were integrated over a depth layer and are given as the flux or respiration under one square meter (in g/m**2/a) between e.g. 100 m and 1000 m depth.

Beschreibung: This dataset contains the values of natural abundance of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes in bulk samples and of nitrogen isotopes in amino acids measured in 22 samples of mesozooplankton (200–2000 µm) from a shelf station off A Coruña (NW Spain, NE Atlantic). The samples were collected by double oblique tows between the surface and 50 m depth with a Juday-Bogorov net (0.5 m Ø, mesh size 200 µm), at approximately monthly intervals during the years 2001 and 2017. The net was equipped with a General Oceanic Flowmeter for the calculation of water filtered and a depth recorder. All samples were collected between 10:00 and 14:00 (local time) and were preserved dried (50 °C, 24h). Large specimens (particularly gelatinous plankton) were excluded by filtration through a 2000 µm sieve. Stable isotope determinations were made by isotope-ratio mass spectrometry using and elemental analyzer (bulk samples) or a gas-chromatograph (derivatized amino acids) as the inlet device.

Beschreibung: This dataset provides the values of stable carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes in bulk muscle samples of 11 species of cetacea from the Macaronesian regions (Canary, Madeira, and Azores Islands) collected between 1996 and 2018. The values of nitrogen stable isotopes in amino acids of muscle samples of the common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) were also provided. The samples were collected from stranded animals by trained personnel. Cetacean samples were obtained from necropsies of stranded cetaceans following a standard protocol defined by the European Cetacean Society (after Kuiken and García Hartmann 1991). Additional data included body length, age (adult, juvenile) and sex for each animal, along with carbon, nitrogen, and lipid content of muscle samples. Isotope data for bulk samples included values for samples with and without lipids. Exact latitude and longitude coordinates for each sample are not available, geographical position of the center of a circle including each island is given instead. Samples were freeze dried or dried (60°C, 48h) before analysis. Stable isotopes in bulk muscle samples were analysed in an isotope-ratio mass spectrometer coupled to an elemental analyser. Aliquots of each sample were analysed whole or after lipid extraction with trichloromethane:methanol (Bligh and Dyer, 1959). Stable nitrogen isotopes in amino acids were analysed after hydrolisis and derivatization of samples in an isotope-ratio mass spectrometer coupled to a gas chromatograph. Details on the analytical procedures can be found in Bode et al. (2021).
