Description: Sortable silt data was obtained from core MD03-2679 located in the North Atlantic. The sediment was analysed with a laser diffractometer at GEOsciences Paris-Sud (GEOPS), in order to provide informations on past changes in intensity of the Iceland-Scotland Overflow Water (ISOW) over the Marine Isotopic Stages 7 and 9. The original sortable silt data (percent and mean) were used for comparison with the new method of correcting for ice-rafted debris (IRD) influence on sortable silt described in Stevenard et al. (submitted).

Description: During glacial terminations, the role of cross-equatorial currents in the northward spreading of warm and salty waters is essential to the reach of the following interglacial state. In the western tropical Atlantic, where the interhemispheric North Brazil current develops, most of the existing temperature records focused on the last deglaciation. Here, using a marine sediment core covering the last 305 kyr before present (BP), we present two records of the surface (mixed layer) and the subsurface (upper thermocline) temperatures based on organic proxies UK'37 and TEXH86 respectively. During the last three glacial terminations, these records exhibit large temperature increases especially in the subsurface layer. We suggest the combined influence of the thermal bipolar seesaw and the Agulhas Leakage, acting together to warm the interior South Atlantic, to explain the strong warming of the tropical western Atlantic thermocline (+ 5°C) during these periods of reduced AMOC. In addition, we propose an enhanced cross-equatorial gyre to elucidate the synchronous deglacial warming of the western and eastern sides of the tropical Atlantic. The resumption of the AMOC at the onset of the following interglacial leads to the release of heat stored in thermocline waters mainly in the whole South Atlantic, as highlighted by the sharp upper ocean cooling recorded at the end of the deglacial interval. The combination of this temperature record and previously published ones in the western tropical Atlantic confirms the strong sensitivity of the upper ocean to AMOC changes in this region.

Description: The geochemical ratio ln(Zr/Rb) was analyzed in the core MD03-2673 located in the North Atlantic. The geochemical proxy ln(Zr/Rb) is used as grain-size proxy free of ice-rafted debris (IRD) influence. The X-ray fluorescence (XRF) data were obtained every cm with a Avaatech core scanner, 4th generation, at the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (LSCE). The data were calibrated using the Multivariate Log-ratio Calibration (MLC) developed by Weltje et al. (2015) by analyzing discrete samples with a PANalytical Epsilon XRF spectrometer. These data were used as reference for grain-size variability free of IRD influence in Stevenard et al. (submitted).

Description: We investigate long-term SST variability of the western tropical South Atlantic (WTSA) using a 300 kyr-long SST record derived from Mg/Ca ratios in shells of Globigerinoides ruber (white). The foraminifera shells were derived from sediment core GL-1180, which was retrieved from 1037 m water depth at the northeastern continental margin of Brazil (8° 27'18 S, 33° 32'53 W) by the Brazilian oil company Petrobras. Measurements of Mg/Ca ratios were performed using an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) at MARUM-Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, University of Bremen. Additionally, Fe, Mn, and Al were measured to monitor contaminants.
