    Abstract: The effects of the manganese (Mn) supplemented diets on the level of superoxide anions (O-2) in the hemolymph, and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in the muscle of Neocaridina heteropoda were investigated. Manganese sulfate (MnSO4) was added to a basal diet at 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, or 100 μg/g. Diets were fed to triplicate groups of shrimp (0.30±0.11 g, 1.4±0.1 cm) in a recirculating freshwater rearing system for 30 days. The Mn concentration in the rearing water, monitored during feeding, was 1.00±0.02 μg/l. O-2 was lower and antioxidant enzyme activity was higher (p 〈 0.05) in shrimps fed Mn-supplemented diets than in shrimps fed the control. Antioxidant enzyme activity reached a maximum when the Mn concentration was 60 μg/g diet.

    Abstract: The effects of a selenium-supplemented diet on the antioxidant enzyme activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in muscles of the shrimp, Neocaridina heteropoda, were investigated. Purified diets with six levels (0, 0.15, 0.30, 0.45, 0.60, and 0.75 μg/g) of supplemental Se were fed to N. heteropoda for three months. CAT and GPX activity was determined after one month and SOD activity was determined every month. The activity of the enzymes was dose dependant; activity of all three enzymes was significantly higher in shrimp fed Se-sup- plemented diets than in those fed the unsupplemented control diet. SOD activity significantly rose and fell during the three months and was higher in the second month than in the first or third. For all three enzymes, antioxi- dant activity reached a maximum when the Se concentration was 0.45 μg/g.

    Abstract: A 70-day feeding trial was conducted to elucidate the effects of different iron (Fe) sources on growth and Fe concentrations in the tissues, organs, and blood of genetically improved farmed tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Five experimental diets (45.0% crude protein, 3.7% crude lipid) with the same Fe concentration (100 mg/kg of feed) were formulated from different Fe sources: ferrous sulfate (FeSO4), ferric chloride (FeCl3), ferrous chloride (FeCl2), ferrous citrate (C6H5FeO7), and iron porphyrin (Fe-porphyrin). The results showed that the percent weight gain (%WG) of fish in the FeCl2 group was the greatest among all five groups (p 〈 0.05). With %WG as the main indicator, FeCl2 was the most suitable source of dietary Fe for O. niloticus.In the FeCl2 group, the content of Fe in the spleen was significantly greater than that in the C6H5FeO7 group on day 28, and that of the FeSO4 group on day 56. The Fe concentrations in the liver, spleen, gill, vertebra, blood, whole intestine, and dorsal white muscle of O. niloticus were not significantly affected by different dietary sources of Fe on day 70. There were only slight dynamic changes to the Fe content of tissues and organs during the experimental period. The Fe contents in different tissues and organs were as follows: spleen 〉 mid-hind intestine 〉 liver 〉 gill, muscle, foregut 〉 spine. The spleen had the highest Fe content in all groups on day 70. These results suggest that FeCl2 is the best source of dietary Fe for O. niloticus with %WG as the main indicator.

    Abstract: An 8 week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary methionine levels on growth, feed utilization, body composition, and morphometric parameters of juvenile yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco), and to determine their dietary methionine requirement. Six isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets (405.0 g/kg crude protein and 18.0 kJ/g gross energy) were formulated, and crystalline L-methionine was added to obtain dietary methionine levels of 5.5, 6.7, 7.5, 8.7, 9.5 and 11.3 g/kg dry diet. Fish with an initial weight of 1.4 g were randomly distributed into six groups and fed the respective formulated diets. Increasing amounts of dietary methionine up to 8.7 g/kg dry diet resulted in increased final body weight, rate of weight gain, specific growth rate, feed conversion efficiency and protein efficiency ratio however, a further increase in methionine level resulted in a decrease in these parameters. No significant difference in survival percentages was detected among the dietary treatments. A one-slope quadratic broken-line analysis model, based on specific growth rate and dietary methionine levels, indicated that the dietary L-methionine requirement of juvenile P. fulvidraco is 10.5 g/kg dry diet (accounting for 26.0 g/kg of dietary protein).

    Abstract: A 56-day growth trial was conducted to determine the isoleucine requirement of juvenile Trachinotus ovatus. Six diets with different concentrations of L-isoleucine (13.2, 15.7, 18.2, 20.7, 23.2 and 25.7g/kg dry diet, defined as diet Ile-1, diet Ile-2, diet Ile-3, diet Ile-4, diet Ile-5 and diet Ile-6, respectively) were formulated to contain 430g/kg crude protein with fish meal, soybean meal, peanut meal, and pre-coated crystalline amino acids. Each diet was randomly assigned to triplicate treatments of 20 fish (initial body weight 6.36±0.03g) in seawater floating net cages. Results indicated that weight gain increased with increasing isoleucine concentrations up to 18.2g/kg, whereas diets containing higher isoleucine concentration reduced the growth performance significantly (P 〈 0.05). The highest muscle protein content, protein efficiency ratio, body protein deposition, viscerasomatic index, hepatosomatic index, and lowest feed conversion ratio, serum AST activities were also found in 18.2g/kg dietary isoleucine treatment (P 〈 0.05). The highest lipid content of whole fish was found in 15.7g/kg dietary isoleucine treatment (P 〈 0.05). Survival rates in treatments Ile-5 and Ile-6 were significantly lower (P 〈 0.05) than those in other treatments. Results of polynomial regression based on weight gain, feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio and body protein deposition indicated that the optimal dietary isoleucine requirement for Trachinotus ovatus reared in seawater floating netcages was 17.39-17.50g/kg isoleucine of dry diet, correspondingly 40.4440.70g/kg of dietary protein.
