    Notes: Summary The fine structure of normal, denervated, and reinnervated muscle spindles in lower lumbrical muscles of rats was studied morphometrically at time intervals ranging from 3–14 months. In control spindles, the mean transverse area of mitochondria was estimated to be more than twice as large in nuclear chain than in typical nuclear bag fibers. Following denervation, there was a severe decrease of the mean number and transverse area of mitochondria, and a moderate, but statistically significant decrease of the mean transverse area of intrafusal muscle fibers (IMFs) despite an increase of the number of IMFs. At 12–14 months of reinnervation, changes of the transverse areas of IMFs were statistically insignificant, but the mean values for the mitochondria were incompletely restored. At 4×3 months, after fourfold repeated crush injuries to the nerve, most of the values estimated (transverse area of mitochondria; number, shape, and transverse area of IMFs and nuclei) tended to approach those in denervated rather than in reinnervated IMFs. The differences of the reactions of intra- and extrafusal muscle fibers following complete motor and sensory denervation appeared to be in accordance with their normal dimensional dissimilarities.

Nach dem der Malachitgrünüberschuß im sauren Milieu zu farblosen Produkten abreagiert hat, ist die verbleibende Färbung ein Maß für die PO4 3−-Menge. Photometrisch lassen sich danach 10–1200 μg PO4 3−/l bestimmen.
    Notes: Abstract In the presence of a stabilising colloid Malachite Green and phosphododekamolybdate acid form a dyestuff salt. When the excess of the Malachite Green has reacted in acid solution to colourless products, the remaining colour is a measure for the phosphate quantity. The method permits the determination of 10–1200 μg of phosphate/l.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wurde eine Methode zur Bestimmung sehr kleiner Mengen von 3,4-Benzpyren in Wasser entwickelt. Nach Anreicherung durch Extraktion und Eindampfen und nach Abtrennung durch DC-Chromatographie wird das 3,4-Benzpyren durch Fluorescenzspektroskopie bestimmt. Der Arbeitsbereich der Methode wurde mit 10−13 bis 10−9 g/g ermittelt. Bei diesen sehr kleinen Konzentrationen ergaben sich Fehlerquellen und Störungen, die abgegrenzt und teilweise ausgeschaltet werden konnten. Zur Absicherung der Ergebnisse wurden gleichzeitig Kontrollbestimmungen durchgeführt, die für eine einwandfreie Analytik im ng-Bereich als notwendig angesehen werden. Diese Methode wird an einigen Beispielen demonstriert.
    Notes: Abstract A method has been developed for the determination of very small quantities of benzopyrene in water. After having been concentrated by extraction and evaporation, by means of thin-layer chromatography, 3.4-benzopyrene is determined by spectral fluorescence analysis. The ascertained scope of this method is from 10−13 to 10−9 g/g. With these minute concentrations a source of errors and inconveniences arose which could be confined and in part eliminated. Controlling analyses were simultaneously carried through. They are considered to be necessary for a reliable analysis in the ng-range. The method is demonstrated with some examples.

    Description: Purpose MRI of lung airspaces using gases with MR-active nuclei ( 3 He, 129 Xe, and 19 F) is an important area of research in pulmonary imaging. The volume-controlled administration of gas mixtures is important for obtaining quantitative information from MR images. State-of-the-art gas administration using plastic bags (PBs) does not allow for a precise determination of both the volume and timing of a 3 He bolus. Methods A novel application unit (AU) was built according to the requirements of the German medical devices law. Integrated spirometers enable the monitoring of the inhaled gas flow. The device is particularly suited for hyperpolarized (HP) gases (e.g., storage and administration with minimal HP losses). The setup was tested in a clinical trial (n = 10 healthy volunteers) according to the German medicinal products law using static and dynamic ventilation HP- 3 He MRI. Results The required specifications for the AU were successfully realized . Compared to PB-administration, better reproducibility of gas intrapulmonary distribution was observed when using the AU for both static and dynamic ventilation imaging. Conclusion The new AU meets the special requirements for HP gases, which are storage and administration with minimal losses. Our data suggest that gas AU-administration is superior to manual modes for determining the key parameters of dynamic ventilation measurements. Magn Reson Med, 2014. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

    Description: The current research has continued on the PF-1000 plasma focus device at the current of 2 MA by comparison of the shots with and without injected deuterium. The increase of the total neutron yield at the level of 10 10 –10 11 per shot was achieved after the compression of about 10  μ g/cm of the deuterium from the gas-valve by about 46  μ g/cm of the neon or deuterium plasma sheath. It increases five times at the decrease of the puffing deuterium mass to one-half. In shots with neon in the chamber and with puffing deuterium, a considerable decrease was confirmed of the soft X-ray emission in comparison with shots without deuterium injection. This decrease can be explained by the absence of the neon in the region of the compressed and hot plasma. The deuterium plasma from the gas-puff should then be confined in the internal structures both in the phase of implosion as well as during their formation and transformation. In shots with puffing deuterium, the evolution of instabilities in the plasma column was suppressed. The deuterium plasma has a higher conductance and better ability to form expressive and dense plasmoids and to transport the internal current in comparison with neon plasma. Neutrons were produced both at the initial phase of stagnation, as well as at a later time at the evolution of the constrictions and dense plasmoids.
