Summary On the basis of the linearized hydrodynamical equations for anf-plane air pressure and wind induced motions in a continuously stratified horizontally unbounded ocean with a free surface are computed. For this purpose, the meteorological fields as well as all unknown functions of the problem are represented by Fourier series or Fourier integrals with respect to time and the horizontal coordinates. Thus, one obtains a system of 12 first order ordinary differential equations for the Fourier coefficients or Fourier transforms of the unknown variables as functions of the vertical coordinatez. The coefficients of this system depend upon the mean density as well as the horizontal Austausch coefficientη h and the vertical Austausch coefficientη v· $$\bar \varrho $$ ·η h andη v can be arbitrary functions ofz. For this system of differential equations, there are 6 boundary conditions at the surface and 6 others at the flat bottom of the sea. This boundary value problem is solved numerically. Solutions for two special examples are compared with those from another model with a free surface. This shows that it is essential to take into account that the surface is free. Finally, different possibilities of application of the model are discussed.
