Notes: The electrical resistivity ρ(T) and magnetic susceptibility χ(T,H) (1.8≤T≤350 K and 0≤H≤5.5 T) have been measured on single crystals and epitaxial thin films of Y1−xTbxBa2Cu3O7. The Tc is 92 K and irrespective of Tb doping up to x=0.50. For T(approximately-greater-than)Tc, ρ(T) has a linear dependence, i.e., ρ(T)≈A+BT, with the reduced resistivity ρ(T)/ρ(250 K) for x=0.10, 0.25, and 0.50, being independent of Tb doping. The results of magnetic susceptibility along with the computation of effective moment of Tb in the presence of crystal electric fields (CEF) tend to suggest that the Tb is mixed valent. The insensitivity of Tc to the Tb doping and the possibility that Tb may be mixed valent are in sharp contrast to the case of Pr and Ce doping which have been shown to be very deleterious to superconductivity. The magnetic susceptibility χ(T) is extremely anisotropic, and this anisotropy cannot be explained by simple models with CEF effects.

Notes: Objective— To determine whether bilateral oophorectomy combined with hysterectomy is an effective treatment for chronic pelvic pain due to congestion. Design—Prospective non-randomized single centre study.Setting— Tertiary referral centre to a specialist pelvic pain clinic in a teaching hospital.Subjects— 36 women, 33 of whom had failed to obtain long term relief of pain on medical therapy.Main outcome measures— Relief of pain, coital frequency, and effect on daily life. Histology of uterus and ovaries. Results— Median pain score on visual analogue scale fell from a prc-operativc value of 10 to 0 at one year. Twelve of the 36 women had some residual pain at one year postoperativcly, but in only one woman was the pain affecting her daily life. Thirty women were noted to have pelvic tenderness pre-opcratively, at one year, 26 had no tenderness and four minimal tenderness on pelvic examination. The median frequency of sexual intercourse increased from once per month preoperatively to eight times per month one year postoperatively. The uterus was histologically normal in 25 women, adenomyosis was present in eight of whom two had ovarian endometriosis. Fibroids were present in three and endometriosis was found confined to the ovaries in one woman. Multiple peripheral cysts were present in the ovaries of 25 women. Conclusion— Bilateral oophorectomy combined with hysterectomy and hormone replacement therapy is an effective treatment for chronic pelvic pain due to venous congestion, which has failed to respond to medical treatment and leads to restoration of normal coital function and daily life.

Notes: Current-voltage (I-V) measurements for the high-temperature superconducting phase of polycrystalline YBa2 Cu3 Ox show loop behavior for temperatures below Tc . A thermal model has been constructed which shows that the loop is caused by a normal/superconducting interface, created by the heat at the solder junction, propagating down the sample. The importance of this effect to device applications and to critical current measurements is briefly discussed.

Notes: Detailed x-ray diffraction characterizations were made of chromium dioxide films fabricated by chemical vapor deposition onto (100) and (110) oriented TiO2 and (0001) Al2O3 substrates. Pole figures were used to examine the epitaxy of these systems, and the lattice parameters were calculated using x-ray area maps. The film on (100) TiO2 exhibits the best epitaxy of the three; however, it is significantly strained relative to bulk CrO2. The film on (110) TiO2 is distorted from the ideal tetragonal structure by 0.17° in the angle between the a and b lattice directions, and also exhibits significant mosaicity. The film on sapphire contains crystallites that have grown in three in-plane orientations, but exhibit the best rocking curve widths and the least degree of strain of the films studied. Magnetization and magnetotransport measurements are shown to demonstrate effects of strain and crystalline structure on the physical properties of these films. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Transport critical current density Jc versus temperature measurements on bulk YBa2Cu3O7−x and YBa2Cu3O7−x-Ag samples were carried out. An anomalous bifurcation in Jc-T curves was observed at temperatures between 55 and 88 K. The bifurcation was introduced by application of a transient pulse. The x-ray, scanning electron microscopy, and electron microprobe analysis results on these samples are presented.
