    Notes: Abstract According to a widely accepted view of intertidal community organization in the north-west Atlantic Ocean, the abundance of perennial seaweeds is regulated by the activities of herbivores (which control ephemeral algal competitors) and carnivores (which control populations of competing filterfeeders). This concept was examined in 1987–1988 in a eulittoral belt on the Atlantic shores of Nova Scotia, Canada, dominated by a closed canopy of Fucus spiralis. A factorial design was used to test the effects of (a) grazers (there were no carnivores present, (b) adult F. spiralis canopy, and (c) substratum type on the abundance of perennial and ephemeral seaweeds. Grazers had no significant (p〉0.05) effect on the density or cover of juvenile F. spiralis, but significantly reduced canopy cover of adults through the winter. The presence of grazers significantly enhanced the cover of ephemeral algae in early spring. Barnacle presence enhanced the cover of juvenile F. spiralis, but reduced the canopy of adult plants through abrasion. The most important regulator of recruitment density in F. spiralis was the presence of a canopy of conspecific adults. Canopy greatly reduced juvenile development. There was no significant relationship between the covers of perennial F. spiralis and ephemeral seaweeds. This study demonstrates that the recruitment of the perennial rockweed population examined is not dependent on the activities consumer animals. The results contrast with work in the midshore intertidal of New England, where the activities of herbivores are thought to regulate the abundances of perennial seaweeds.

    Notes: Abstract The importance of species interactions and recruitment variability was examined during the first year and a half of primary succession (1988–1989) on an exposed rocky seashore near Halifax, Nova Scotia. Previous work suggested that emergent rock on these shores is normally dominated by fucoid rockweeds because predatory whelks control the sessile animal competitors, mussels and barnacles, and because herbivorous littorinids control ephemeral algal competitors. Abundances of all species except seasonal ephemeral algae were very small throughout this experiment and we found no significant effects of carnivory, herbivory, plant-animal competition or plant-plant competition. A slight facilitation of Fucus recruitment is attributed to a thin mat of ephemeral, blue-green algae. Very few other studies have directly manipulated intertidal ephemeral algae. As primary succession may be very rare in this assemblage, these results may be specific to these circumstances, but they highlight the varying importance of species interactions with variable recruitment. In particular, it appears that variations in recruitment success may be important to community structure, even when recruitment is not limited by propagule supply. The scale of the study also provides insight into successional processes occurring after the recent, extensive ice-scour of exposed seashores in this region.

    Notes: Abstract Clinal differentiation of stipe traits in Laminaria (simplices) populations occurs on a gradient of exposure to wave action. Crossability tests and the production of fertile hybrids established interfertility between populations from the extremes of the morphological range. Reciprocal transplantation experiments between exposed and sheltered sites did not produce significant changes in stipe morphology. Quantitative genetic analysis of the degree of resemblance between relatives indicated a relatively high genetic component in the interpopulation differentiation. This is consistent with the results of the transplantation experiments. Within-population heritability estimates at the exposed site were low, perhaps because of intensive local stabilising selection which acts to reduce genetic variability. The question of conspecificity of L. saccharina and L. longicruris in view of these results is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Oxygen evolution and uptake by whole thalli of the large marine alga Laminaria longicruris de la Pylaie were measured for 24 h, once every 2 weeks for a year, using large chambers to incubate the plants on the sea bed. Diel rates of photosynthesis and respiration were calculated from these measurements and continuous light measurements were used to extrapolate the data between observation dates. The resulting estimates were combined with measurements of growth and carbon content to give an annual carbon budget for a typical mature plant. Annual net assimilation was 6.8 mgC per cm2 of frond surface (71 cal cm-2). Approximately 45% of this appeared in the production of new frond tissue, and a further 12% was accounted for by storage of carbon in mature frond tissue. About 8% was needed for stipe growth, and the remaining 35% was assumed to be lost as dissolved organic carbon. Diel net photosynthetic rates reached a maximum in June and July and were negative only in November, indicating an ability to produce a photosynthetic surplus throughout winter. In early winter the plants drew on stored reserves to supplement photosynthesis in providing carbon for growth, but from January onwards photosynthesis provided more than enough carbon for growth.

    Notes: Abstract Each of fourFucus species occurring on the Atlantic coast of Canada was presented to two species of gammarid amphipods in no-choice and multiple-choice laboratory experiments. We also measured concentrations of anti-herbivore phlorotannins in each of theFucus species. The study site was Cranberry Cove in Nova Scotia, Canada, and experiments were conducted in 1988. In a multiple-choice experiment,F. vesiculosus was very heavily grazed. Other species were much less affected. In a no-choice experiment,F. evanescens, F. spiralis andF. vesiculosus were eaten at similar rates, whileF. distichus was barely grazed. These results correlate with measurements of phorotannin concentrations in each of the species.F. distichus had much higher concentrations than did the other species (which were not significantly different among themselves). There is no general clear-cut relationship between grazer deterrence and competitive capability within the fucoid guild studied.
