Notes: summary  The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the surface and resin–dentine interface characteristics of permanent tooth dentine cut with diamond or carbide burs and treated with phosphoric acid (PA) or an acidic conditioner. Labial surfaces of permanent incisors were prepared into dentine with high-speed carbide or diamond burs and divided into two halves. Phosphoric acid 36% was applied on one half and non-rinse conditioner (NRC) was applied on the other half. Ten randomly selected scanning electron microscopy (SEM) fields from each specimen (n = 15) were evaluated. Occlusal surfaces of third molars were divided in two halves for evaluation of the resin–dentine interface. The halves were randomly assigned to one of each conditioner and restored with Prime & Bond NT/Spectrum. Ten specimens were analysed by SEM to evaluate hybrid layer formation and interfacial seal. We observed that surfaces prepared with carbide bur presented less residual smear plugs (P 〈 0·05) than surfaces prepared with diamond burs. Surfaces conditioned with NRC, which is a smear layer modifier, presented more residual smear plugs than surfaces conditioned with PA (P 〈 0·05). Treatment with PA resulted in more sealed interfaces than specimens treated with NRC. Within the limitations of this study the results showed that carbide burs leave a surface that is more conducive to bonding than diamond burs.

Notes: Abstract We reviewed the management of 167 patients with foreign body ingestion from 1980 to 1986. Two patients (1.1%) refused treatment. Nonoperative management was attempted in 14 (8.4%) patients. Endoscopy was performed on 117 patients with an overall success rate of 85.5% and a complication rate of 1.7%. Surgical treatment was required in 51 (30.0%) patients, 14 of whom had previous unsuccessful endoscopy.

Notes: Abstract We first show that a theorem by Cartan that generalizes the Frobenius integrability theorem allows us (given certain conditions) to obtain noncurvature solutions for the differential Bianchi conditions and for higher-degree similar relations. We then prove that there is no algorithmic procedure to determine, for a reasonable restricted algebra of functions on spacetime, whether a given connection form satisfies the preceding conditions. A parallel result gives a version of Gödel's first incompleteness theorem within an (axiomatized) theory of gauge fields.

Notes: Abstract Brasilia, the capital city of Brazil, is located in the central region of the country. Climate in the area is semitropical with an annual rainfall of 1500 mm. The geological environment in the area consists of low-grade metamorphic rocks. Slates of varying colors, metasiltstone, and quartzite beds are present. Over the Precambrian rocks is a lateritic layer varying in thickness from centimeters up to 30 m. Latosol dominates the existing plateaus, while laterite crusts and immature soils are dominant in the transition zones between plateaus and river valleys. Erosional problems related to the lateritic terrains were known prior to the settlement of the city in 1961. During 1986, erosion became a serious threat when several pseudosinkholes occurred in the urban area. Occurrence of pseudosinkholes resulted in condemnation of an area of 300,000 m2 and the demolition of several buildings. Preliminary studies indicated at the time that underground erosion and pseudosinkholes were generated by shortening of the percolation path of groundwater due to the progress, toward the residential area, of large gullies. This produced an increase in the hydraulic gradient, resulting in the removal of latosol particles. Occurrence of pseudosinkholes in other areas of the city has led the Institute of Geosciences to investigate the problem in more detail. Studies have been conducted looking for correlation between pseudosinkhole occurrence and geologic, geomorphic, geotechnical, and urban development features. Recent results show a much more complex process then previously thought. Field data suggests that termite activity and recharge of the water table by inadequate disposal of residential sewer systems are directly related to the problem.

Notes: Abstract  Twenty-three patients with chronic or acute to chronic slip of the capital femoral epiphysis were treated using a modified trapezoid osteotomy of the femoral neck. All slips were greater than 60°. After a follow-up period of 70 (54–93) months, the results were excellent or good in 18 hips, fair in 1, and poor in 4 hips. Avascular necrosis developed in 3 hips, and chondrolysis in 2.

Notes: Summary Forty patients with intertrochanteric fractures of the femur were treated by external fixation between July 1992 and April 1994. They were selected because of their high surgical risk, and evaluated by radiographs immediately after operation, and at 30 and 90 days. The results indicate that external fixation is a useful method of treatment for this type of patient.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we sketch a probabilistic particle approach requiring no separate concept of wave to obtain interference. We describe in some detail how things work from a physical standpoint and show with a number of figures how the standard wave concepts are developed from purely particle random walks. For the wave concepts we have in each case a matching probability concept. The preliminary theory developed here is qualitative and stresses the physical character of the assumptions. In particular, we show that the periodic behavior of light is derived from the source and not from individual photons.
