    Description: We describe the ocean general circulation model Icosahedral Nonhydrostatic Weather and Climate Model (ICON‐O) of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, which forms the ocean‐sea ice component of the Earth system model ICON‐ESM. ICON‐O relies on innovative structure‐preserving finite volume numerics. We demonstrate the fundamental ability of ICON‐O to simulate key features of global ocean dynamics at both uniform and non‐uniform resolution. Two experiments are analyzed and compared with observations, one with a nearly uniform and eddy‐rich resolution of ∼10 km and another with a telescoping configuration whose resolution varies smoothly from globally ∼80 to ∼10 km in a focal region in the North Atlantic. Our results show first, that ICON‐O on the nearly uniform grid simulates an ocean circulation that compares well with observations and second, that ICON‐O in its telescope configuration is capable of reproducing the dynamics in the focal region over decadal time scales at a fraction of the computational cost of the uniform‐grid simulation. The telescopic technique offers an alternative to the established regionalization approaches. It can be used either to resolve local circulation more accurately or to represent local scales that cannot be simulated globally while remaining within a global modeling framework.
    Description: Plain Language Summary: Icosahedral Nonhydrostatic Weather and Climate Model (ICON‐O) is a global ocean general circulation model that works on unstructured grids. It rests on novel numerical techniques that belong to the class of structure‐preserving finite Volume methods. Unstructured grids allow on the one hand a uniform coverage of the sphere without resolution clustering, and on the other hand they provide the freedom to intentionally cluster grid points in some region of interest. In this work we run ICON‐O on an uniform grid of approximately 10 km resolution and on a grid with four times less degrees of freedom that is stretched such that in the resulting telescoping grid within the North Atlantic the two resolutions are similar, while outside the focal area the grid approaches smoothly ∼80 km resolution. By comparison with observations and reanalysis data we show first, that the simulation on the uniform 10 km grid provides a decent mesoscale eddy rich simulation and second, that the telescoping grid is able to reproduce the mesoscale rich circulation locally in the North Atlantic and on decadal time scales. This telescoping technique of unstructured grids opens new research directions.

    Notes: Superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films with Tc=89.5 K were deposited on MgLaAl11O19 (11¯0) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the YBa2Cu3O7−δ films were epitaxial films, with the c axis perpendicular to the substrate surfaces. Microstrip resonators of YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films deposited on MgLaAl11O19 substrates were fabricated. The loaded quality factor of the resonator was 1007 at 77 K and 4.28 GHz. As a new substrate for high Tc oxide superconducting films, MgLaAl11O19 substrates are especially suitable for superconducting-microwave applications.

    Notes: We analyzed the Raman spectra and x-ray diffraction of two GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As superlattices grown by molecular-beam epitaxy on a 4 ° misoriented (001) GaAs substrate and an exactly (001)-oriented GaAs substrate respectively. From the frequency shifts of the longitudinal-optical- (LO) confined phonons in the Raman spectra and the variation in linewidths of both the LO-confined phonons and the satellite peaks in x-ray diffraction, we found that the 4 ° misorientation of the GaAs substrate from (001) toward [110] direction improves the interface quality of the superlattices.

    Notes: Based on a simplified analysis of perfectly conducting metals, it has been suggested qualitatively that establishing metal-semiconductor interfaces at the heterojunctions of polar semiconductor quantum wells introduces a set of boundary conditions that dramatically reduces or eliminates unwanted carrier energy loss caused by interactions with interface longitudinal-optical (LO) phonon modes. In this article, it is theoretically demonstrated that comparable reductions in LO phonon scattering strengths may be achieved for metal-semiconductor structures with metal having realistic conductivities and Thomas–Fermi screening lengths.

    Notes: UV laser irradiation of ammonia adsorbed on GaAs(100) leads to molecular desorption, with a mean translational temperature of 〈Etrans/2k(approximately-greater-than)=300 K, independent of photon energy and isotope substitution. However, the photodesorption cross section depends strongly on isotope substitution: σNH3/σND3=4.1 at hν=6.4 eV. This isotope effect is too large to be accounted for by the mass difference in the leaving particles (NH3 vs ND3), but can be successfully explained in terms of an isotope effect in the internal N–H(D) coordinates. We take this as evidence for uv-driven photodesorption from electronically quenched, but vibrationally hot ground state ammonia.

    Notes: UV laser irradiation of ammonia adsorbed on GaAs(100) leads to molecular desorption and dissociation. A nitride passivation layer can be formed on the GaAs surface at 100 K by simultaneous exposure to ammonia and uv photons in a UHV environment. The nitride layer consists of a mixture of Ga and As nitrides. While the dominating GaN surface species is thermally stable, AsN desorbs below 800 K. Surface NH2 is identified as an intermediate. The implication of this study for selective area passivation and GaN growth is discussed.

    Notes: We demonstrate that surface plasmon oscillations excited at an adsorbate covered metal–vacuum interface can effectively couple to the electronic system of the adsorbed molecule. Using p-polarized light (hν=3.5 eV) incident at the surface plasmon resonant angle in Kretschmann's attenuated-total-reflection (ATR) configuration, we observe a strong enhancement of the photodissociation rate of Mo(CO)6 from a 180 A(ring) Al film, evaporated on a quartz prism in UHV.

    Notes: The photodissociation rate of phosgene (Cl2CO) adsorbed on Pt(111) has been measured as a function of photon energy at normal incidence and as a function of incident angle using p-polarized light. Compared to the gas phase, the wavelength dependence of the initial photolysis cross section on the surface is redshifted. The angular response to p-polarized light is wavelength dependent. Above 315 nm, the angular dependence correlates with calculated metal absorption. At 280 nm, the angular dependence is much too strong to be accounted for solely by substrate excitation. A combination of substrate and direct excitation is adequate. This is the first direct evidence, for monolayers on metals, that both direct and substrate excitation contribute to surface photochemistry but dominate at different wavelengths.
