Notes: The structural stability and electronic properties of a (Sb2)2/(GaSb)2(111) semimetal–semiconductor superlattice are investigated by a first-principles all-electron linearized augmented plane-wave method within the local spin density functional approximation. When bulk values are used the two interfacial distances D1 and D2 are energetically unfavorable. The fully optimized structure shows that the bond lengths of Sb–Ga and Sb–Sb at interfaces are 1.3% and 2.8% longer than their bulk values, respectively. Further electronic band calculations of the stable (Sb2)2/(GaSb)2(111) superlattice show that the system has semimetallic behavior. A p-like interface band is observed below the Fermi level. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The yttrium–sialon ceramics with the composition of Y0.333Si10Al2ON15 and an excess addition of Y2O3 (2 or 5 wt%) were fabricated by hot isostatic press (HIP) sintering at 1800°C for 1 h. The resulting materials were subsequently heat-treated in the temperature range 1300–1900°C to investigate its effect on the α→β-sialon phase transformation, the morphology of α-sialon grains, and mechanical properties. The results show that α-sialons stabilized by yttrium have high thermal stability. An adjustment of the α-sialon phase composition is the dominating reaction in the investigated Y–α-sialon ceramics during low-temperature annealing. Incorporation of excess Y2O3 could effectively promote the formation of elongated α-sialon grains during post-heat-treating at relatively higher temperature (1700° and 1900°C) and hence resulted in a high fracture toughness (KIC= 6.3 MPa·m1/2) via grain debonding and pullout effects. Although the addition of 5 wt% Y2O3 could promote the growth of elongated α grains with a higher aspect ratio, the higher liquid-phase content increased the interfacial bonding strength and therefore hindered interface debonding and crack deflection. The heat treatment at 1500°C significantly changed the morphology of α-sialon grains from elongated to equiaxed and hence decreased its toughness.

Notes: Barium aluminosilicate (BAS) glass-ceramic composites reinforced with various volume percents (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 vol%) of SiC whiskers were fabricated by hot pressing. The microstructure, the whisker/matrix interface structure, the phase constitution, and the mechanical properties of the composites were systematically studied by means of SEM, TEM, and XRD techniques as well as by indentation crack microfracture and single-edge-notched-beam bend testing. It was demonstrated that the incorporation of SiC whiskers could significantly increase the flexural strength and fracture toughness of BAS glass-ceramic matrices. The addition of active Al2O3 to the BAS matrix reduced the amount of SiO2 in the matrix, forming needlelike mullite, which further improved the mechanical properties.

Notes: In amacrine-like cells freshly dissociated from crucian carp (Carassius auratus) retina, we recorded whole-cell responses to rapid application of glutamate and kainate. Currents induced by glutamate, but not kainate, usually showed extremely rapid desensitization, and the mean time constant for the decay of the responses to 10 mm glutamate was 2.77 ms. N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) failed to induce any current even with coapplication of glycine and removal of extracellular Mg2 + · 1-(4-aminophenyl)-3-Methylcarbamyl-4-methyl-7,8-methylenedioxy-3,4-dihydro-5H-2,3-benzodiazepine (GYKI 53655), a selective α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionic acid (AMPA) receptor antagonist, was found to completely block glutamate-induced currents, suggesting that the glutamate receptors on these cells are AMPA preferring. The value of EC50 for glutamate and kainate was determined to be 2.73 mm and 97.5 μm, respectively. Noise analysis of fluctuation of whole-cell currents induced by kainate of different concentrations indicated that the mean conductance of the AMPA receptor channels was 5.70 pS. Splice variant analysis of the AMPA receptors was also conducted by comparing the effects of cyclothiazide, a flip receptor-preferring modulator and 4-[2-(phenylsulphonylamino)ethylthio]-2,6-difluoro-phenoxyacetamide (PEPA), a flop receptor-preferring modulator, on glutamate-induced responses. PEPA was much more potent than cyclothiazide at these receptors with a EC50 of 17.3 μm. The mean ratio of the potentiation by PEPA versus cyclothiazide (P/C ratio) was 4.39. These modulatory effects of cyclothiazide and PEPA were rather similar to those obtained at AMPA receptors assembled from flop variants expressed in Xenopus oocytes, suggesting that the AMPA receptor of the carp amacrine cells may predominantly consist of the flop splice variants.

Notes: The 4992-bp replicon of a large cryptic plasmid in the gram-positive bacterium Leifsonia xyli subsp. cynodontis was identified and sequenced. The replicon encoded two proteins essential for plasmid replication and stability. The putative replication protein (RepA) is homologous to that of the plasmids in mycobacterial pLR7 family, while the putative ParA protein immediately downstream of RepA is significantly homologous to the Walker-type ATPase required for partition of plasmid and chromosome of the gram-positive bacteria. These two proteins and other ORFs are clustered with the putative promoters and other regulatory sequences, illustrating an efficient organization of the replicon for this novel plasmid.

Notes: The ε-isozyme of protein kinase C (PKCε) and the vanilloid receptor 1 (VR1) are both expressed in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons and are reported to be predominantly and specifically involved in nociceptive function. Using phosphospecific antibody against the C-terminal hydrophobic site Ser729 of PKCε as a marker of enzyme activation, the state-dependent activation of PKCε, as well as the expression of VR1 in rat DRG neurons, was evaluated in different experimental pain models in vivo. Quantitative analysis showed that phosphorylation of PKCε in DRG neurons was significantly up-regulated after carrageen- and Complete Freund's Adjuvant-induced inflammation, while it was markedly down-regulated after chronic constriction injury. A double-labeling study showed that phosphorylation of PKCε was expressed predominantly in VR1 immunoreactivity positive small diameter DRG neurons mediating the nociceptive information from peripheral tissue to spinal cord. The VR1 protein expression showed no significant changes after either inflammation or chronic constriction injury. These data indicate that functional activation of PKCε has a close relationship with the production of inflammatory hyperalgesia and the sensitization of the nociceptors. Inflammatory mediator-induced activation of PKCε and subsequent sensitization of VR1 to noxious stimuli by PKCε may be involved in nociceptor sensitization.
