Notes: A two-variable Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism for isothermal CO oxidation on a catalytically active surface is presented. It shows bistability stemming from 2 cusp bifurcations, which can be obtained analytically for low pressure. Inclusion of CO diffusion on the surface leads to a system of partial differential equations, which exhibits nucleation and front propagation phenomena in the bistable region. While the line of equistability could with good accuracy be solved for analytically, the front velocities and critical radii for nucleation had to be determined numerically (using the method of heteroclinic orbits). Throughout the calculations the kinetics and rate constants for the CO oxidation on Pt(111) are used. Here the model can be reduced by adiabatic elimination of one variable (namely oxygen coverage) allowing a comparison to the exactly solved one-variable Schlögl model. Possible implications for future experimental work are briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract We develop growth rates ford-dimensional domains in bistable reaction-diffusion systems. The growth of the domain is restrained by an inhibitory nonlocal interaction and leads to stable stationary inhomogeneous states as known from many applications in nonequilibrium systems. The mathematical analysis is quite similar to problems of Ostwald ripening in van-der-Waals gases though the physical mechanism is different. We show that the nonlocal interaction leads to a competition between several domains. Finally our approach is applied to optical bistability, thermokinetic systems and to nonlinear semiconductors.

Notes: Abstract The influence of spatio-temporal external multiplicative fluctuations on a single kink in a bistable distributed system is studied. For this purpose we derive a stochastic dynamic equation for the position of the shifted kink. An analytical estimate for spatio-temporally uncorrelated fluctuations is represented and discussed. We draw the conclusion that multiplicative noise induces a propagation of the most probable kink into the region of larger noise. This effect is demonstrated in numerical simulations.

Notes: Abstract The coordinate of a white noise driven harmonic oscillator is used as a stochastic source term in bistable dynamics. This new kind of Gaussian colored noise gives rise to resonance phenomena due to a peak in the spectrum. We investigate its effect on linear and bistable systems. We derive a Markovian approximation for driven bistable oscillators and overdamped systems. In the resonance region computer simulations were carried out using an extension of Fox' algorithm procedure for colored noise. We find an increase of the transition rates in bistable systems as compared with the case of bistable systems driven by white and exponentially correlated noise.

Notes: Abstract We investigate a standard model for bistable reaction-diffusion-systems, which shares characteristic properties with the van-der-Pol oscillator for distributed generators and the FitzHugh-Nagumo system. In this system we study the effect of a long ranging inhibitor. As a main result we show the existence of two inhomogeneous stationary solutions—the smaller one is always a saddle which corresponds to a critical nucleus, while the larger one arises as astable solution. In carrying out the linear stability analysis for these solutions, we have to treat the Schrödinger-equation for a double-well potential. This is done approximately by a supersymmetric approach which yields the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Schrödinger-equation. Furthermore we compare our analytical findings with numerical results-especially the occurrence of oscillating solutions is shown.
