    Description: Although food has been proposed as a possible factor on population regulation of small mammals, evidence of food restriction in field conditions is still lacking. Food restriction is generally thought to occur in high-density years of oscillating populations of small mammals. By using two body condition indices (muscle protein concentration and cleaned carcass index), we investigated variations of body condition of the greater long-tailed hamster (Tscherskia triton) and the striped hamster (Cricetulus barabensis) in the Raoyang County of the North China Plain during a population decline- and low-phase from 1998 to 2003. Our laboratory experiments showed that food restriction reduced muscle protein concentration and cleaned carcass index of greater long-tailed hamster. We found there were significant differences in body condition of hamsters over the six years. Both the muscle protein concentration and cleaned carcass index of T. triton were significantly and positively correlated with its yearly trap successes, which reflected yearly population densities. Muscle protein concentration of C. barabensis was positively correlated with the total yield of the wheat. This observation supported the hypothesis on the in-phase relation between food resources or availability and rodent abundances. During the four seasons, muscle protein concentration of two species was highest in autumn, and lowest in summer. These two body condition indices of wild T. triton in summer and in low phases were similar to 60% food restricted animals raised in the laboratory, but significantly lower than nonfood-restricted animals. Our results indicated that malnutrition occurred in summer when food was not abundant, and in low density years with low grain production (an index reflecting food abundance of rodents) in our study region. Therefore, we concluded that food limitation may play an important role in seasonal and inter-annual population fluctuation of these two hamster species.

    Notes: Room-temperature synchrotron radiation photoemission studies of rare-earth/Hg1−xCdxTe(110) junctions were performed as a function of metal coverage for the rare-earth metals Sm, and Gd. These new results are compared to our previous results for Yb/Hg1−xCdxTe junctions. At low rare-earth metal coverages, we observe in all cases a rare-earth Te reaction which removes Hg and Cd from the interface region, and the three-dimensional island growth of a rare-earth telluride layer 4.0–4.5 monolayer thick. The most abrupt interface region is observed for Gd/Hg1−xCdxTe, in agreement with the more reactive character of this interface as compared to Yb/Hg1−xCdxTe and Sm/Hg1−xCdxTe. For higher rare-earth metal coverages, we observe the formation of a metallic rare-earth rich layer at the surface, which effectively traps Hg atoms diffusing across the interface through the formation of a rare-earth–Hg alloy.

    Notes: Detailed synchrotron radiation photoemission studies of Yb/Hg1−xCdxTe junctions as a function of Yb coverage were performed at room temperature. Photoemission from physisorbed xenon after cooling the sample to 35 K was also used to examine the local overlayer work function and the development of interface morphology. For Yb coverages less than 6 A(ring), the data provide evidence for the lateral growth of islands consisting of Yb-Te reaction products involving divalent Yb, and an associated Hg depletion within an 18-A(ring)-thick near-surface layer. Upon island coalescence at an Yb coverage of 6 A(ring), the formation of a metallic Yb-rich layer at the surface is observed. This layer traps Hg atoms diffusing across the interface through the formation of an Yb-Hg alloy, and is responsible for the nonmonotonic behavior of the Hg interface concentration as a function of Yb coverage.

    Notes: Gd-Tb-Fe amorphous films were prepared in an rf sputtering system. Torque measurements were performed systematically on samples which were as-deposited or annealed at 160 °C up to 98 h in air. The torque curves showed additional peaks near 0° and 180°, which increased in amplitude with annealing time. The origin of the anomalous torque curves was investigated with computer simulation, Auger analysis, Kerr rotation and magnetization measurements, and chemical etching. It is concluded that the additional peaks on the torque curve arise from the surface oxidation layer which can be characterized with parameters determined by the computer simulation.

    Notes: Synchrotron radiation photoemission studies show that thin Yb overlayers (0.3–4.1) monolayers) enhance the oxidation of GaAs(110) surfaces. The magnitude of the promotion effect varies as a function of Yb coverage. The oxidation reaction products involve several nonequivalent oxidation states of As and Ga. The specific catalytic activity of the pure divalent Yb overlayers in promoting GaAs oxidation appears lower than that of Sm overlayers containing both Sm2+ and Sm3+ species. The spectroscopic signature of the oxidation reaction products, instead, is compellingly similar for the two rare-earth promoters. We propose that the oxidation promotion mechanism is related, in both cases, to the decomposition of metal/semiconductor interface reaction products upon exposure to oxygen, and that the rare-earth atomic valence has only a limited influence on the promotion mechanism.

    Notes: The heat capacity of the perovskite high-TC superconductor YBa2Cu3O7−δ was measured from 5.3 to 350 K in an adiabatic calorimetric cryostat. A break in the heat-capacity curve, associated with the critical temperature for superconductivity was observed between 90.09 and 92.59 K. The transition temperature was identified as 91.44 K, and ΔCp,m was calculated to be 0.559R at that temperature. The lattice heat capacity was evaluated by means of the recently developed Komada/Westrum phonon distribution model and the apparent characteristic temperature aitch-thetaKW was calculated to be 107.7 K. The excess electronic heat capacity for the superconducting phase was evaluated and the energy gap was identified as 234. R K. Excess contribution, resulting from magnetic impurities, was noted below 20 K. Thermodynamic properties at selected temperatures are presented.

    Notes: A grazing incidence spherical grating monochromator (SGM) for photoelectron spectroscopy has been set up in NSRL. It covers the energy range 10–1000 eV. The primary results of commissioning and operation of the beamline have been described. The resolution power could be obtained from 500 to 1000 (E/ΔE) with 50 μm of slit opening in a wide range of photon energy. The improvement of the beamline performance is continuing. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: The effect of amitriptyline on kainate- and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-induced toxicity and release of amino acids from cerebellar granule neurons was studied. The ED50 for amitriptyline, imipramine, and nortriptyline protection against NMDA-induced toxicity was 6.9, 6.5, and 1.3 μM, respectively. None of these compounds protected against kainate-induced toxicity. Even though amitriptyline was protective against NMDA-induced toxicity, it had no effect on the NMDA-induced increase in extracellular levels of glutamate or aspartate from these cells, indicating a dissociation between NMDA receptor activation (as indicated by glutamate content elevations) and NMDA-induced toxicity. However, kainate and quisqualate treatment resulted in elevations of glutamate and taurine levels that were further augmented in the presence of 25 μM amitriptyline. These findings confirm the reports of others that tricyclic antidepressants have neuroprotective effects related to the NMDA receptor and expand on these reports by showing that even though there is protection against toxicity, the NMDA receptor is nevertheless activated, suggesting an involvement of these compounds at sites removed from the receptor. Furthermore, this is the first report showing an interaction of tricyclic antidepressants with the function of non-NMDA receptors.
