    Description: Nitrogen is the main constituent of the Earth's atmosphere, but its provenance in the Earth's mantle remains uncertain. The relative contribution of primordial nitrogen inherited during the Earth's accretion versus that subducted from the Earth's surface is unclear1-6. Here we show that the mantle may have retained remnants of such primordial nitrogen. We use the rare 15N15N isotopologue of N2 as a new tracer of air contamination in volcanic gas effusions. By constraining air contamination in gases from Iceland, Eifel (Germany) and Yellowstone (USA), we derive estimates of mantle δ15N (the fractional difference in 15N/14N from air), N2/36Ar and N2/3He. Our results show that negative δ15N values observed in gases, previously regarded as indicating a mantle origin for nitrogen7-10, in fact represent dominantly air-derived N2 that experienced 15N/14N fractionation in hydrothermal systems. Using two-component mixing models to correct for this effect, the 15N15N data allow extrapolations that characterize mantle endmember δ15N, N2/36Ar and N2/3He values. We show that the Eifel region has slightly increased δ15N and N2/36Ar values relative to estimates for the convective mantle provided by mid-ocean-ridge basalts11, consistent with subducted nitrogen being added to the mantle source. In contrast, we find that whereas the Yellowstone plume has δ15N values substantially greater than that of the convective mantle, resembling surface components12-15, its N2/36Ar and N2/3He ratios are indistinguishable from those of the convective mantle. This observation raises the possibility that the plume hosts a primordial component. We provide a test of the subduction hypothesis with a two-box model, describing the evolution of mantle and surface nitrogen through geological time. We show that the effect of subduction on the deep nitrogen cycle may be less important than has been suggested by previous investigations. We propose instead that high mid-ocean-ridge basalt and plume δ15N values may both be dominantly primordial features.

    Description: We report measurements of resolved 12CH2D2 and 13CH3D at natural abundances in a variety of methane gases produced naturally and in the laboratory. The ability to resolve 12CH2D2 from 13CH3D provides unprecedented insights into the origin and evolution of CH4. The results identify conditions under which either isotopic bond order disequilibrium or equilibrium are expected. Where equilibrium obtains, concordant D12CH2D2 and D13CH3D temperatures can be used reliably for thermometry. We find that concordant temperatures do not always match previous hypotheses based on indirect estimates of temperature of formation nor temperatures derived from CH4/H2 D/H exchange, underscoring the importance of reliable thermometry based on the CH4 molecules themselves. Where D12CH2D2 and D13CH3D values are inconsistent with thermodynamic equilibrium, temperatures of formation derived from these species are spurious. In such situations, while formation temperatures are unavailable, disequilibrium isotopologue ratios nonetheless provide novel information about the formation mechanism of the gas and the presence or absence of multiple sources or sinks. In particular, disequilibrium isotopologue ratios may provide the means for differentiating between methane produced by abiotic synthesis vs. biological processes. Deficits in 12CH2D2 compared with equilibrium values in CH4 gas made by surface-catalyzed abiotic reactions are so large as to point towards a quantum tunneling origin. Tunneling also accounts for the more moderate depletions in 13CH3D that accompany the low 12CH2D2 abundances produced by abiotic reactions. The tunneling signature may prove to be an important tracer of abiotic methane formation, especially where it is preserved by dissolution of gas in cool hydrothermal systems (e.g., Mars). Isotopologue signatures of abiotic methane production can be erased by infiltration of microbial communities, and D12CH2D2 values are a key tracer of microbial recycling.

    Notes: Abstract The arterial system is characterized geometrically as a system of branched elastic fluid lines whose frequency response is then known in the sense of the Fourier transform. For convenience of visualization the transient response of the individual tube to an input pressure-flow pair is represented in the time domain by kernel functions indicating the hybrid effect of viscosity and momentum on the line impedance and damping characteristics. The system as a whole is then divided into a zone of smaller tubes (below 3 mm) and a zone of larger tubes extending up to the aorta. It is shown that as a system each labyrinth of tubes below the 3 mm size may be replaced by a single impedance transformation which is dominantly resistive-capacitive. In the larger tubes, the transformation of the pulse wave at different stations is considered a point of interest. Therefore hand calculated examples are worked to derive the response of a system involving some of the larger vessels to a pressure or flow pulse of the typical shape seen near the heart. The result suggests that the dicrotic wave seen in the pressure pulse of mammals is due to the hybrid viscosity-momentum nature of the longer fluid lines in relation to the gradation of unmatched terminal impedances with which they are terminated. Damping of the higher frequency components is also accounted for.

    Notes: Summary Results of several recent cross-correlation studies have been interpreted in terms of“neuronal plasticit” and “stimulus dependent wiring diagrams” produced by presumed dynamic neural reorganization mechanisms. Presented here are examples of stimulus-dependent cross-correlograms observed in a pair of type IV units recorded in the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN). The interpretation of these correlation data is based on current hypotheses of DCN circuitry. It is suggested that plasticity mechanisms are not responsible for these stimulus-dependent correlations. A more likely mechanism is one that allows various portions of a hard wired neural circuit to be selectively activated by the stimuli.

    Description: Molecular nitrogen (N 2 ) comprises three-quarters of Earth’s atmosphere and significant portions of other planetary atmospheres. We report a 19 per mil () excess of 15 N 15 N in air relative to a random distribution of nitrogen isotopes, an enrichment that is 10 times larger than what isotopic equilibration in the atmosphere allows. Biological experiments show that the main sources and sinks of N 2 yield much smaller proportions of 15 N 15 N in N 2 . Electrical discharge experiments, however, establish 15 N 15 N excesses of up to +23. We argue that 15 N 15 N accumulates in the atmosphere because of gas-phase chemistry in the thermosphere (〉100 km altitude) on time scales comparable to those of biological cycling. The atmospheric 15 N 15 N excess therefore reflects a planetary-scale balance of biogeochemical and atmospheric nitrogen chemistry, one that may also exist on other planets.

    Description: Establishing the age of the Moon is critical to understanding solar system evolution and the formation of rocky planets, including Earth. However, despite its importance, the age of the Moon has never been accurately determined. We present uranium-lead dating of Apollo 14 zircon fragments that yield highly precise, concordant ages, demonstrating that they are robust against postcrystallization isotopic disturbances. Hafnium isotopic analyses of the same fragments show extremely low initial 176 Hf/ 177 Hf ratios corrected for cosmic ray exposure that are near the solar system initial value. Our data indicate differentiation of the lunar crust by 4.51 billion years, indicating the formation of the Moon within the first ~60 million years after the birth of the solar system.

    Description: Although human angiosarcoma has been associated frequently with mutational inactivation of the tumor suppressor gene Ink4a/Arf, the underlying mechanisms have not been delineated. Here we report that malignant angiosarcoma is associated with high levels of RelA/NF-κB and IL-6 in contrast to normal vessels or benign hemagiomas. Studies of Ink4a/Arf deficient mice not only recapitulate genetic traits observed in human angiosarcoma, but also unveil a possible therapeutic link comprised of the NF-kB/IL-6/Stat3 signaling axis. In Ink4a/Arf−/− cells, NF-κB controlled Stat3 signaling by transcriptionally controlling the expression of IL-6, gp130, and Jak2. Further, IL-6 mediated Stat3 signaling through the sIL-6R. Inhibition of Ikkβ solely in myeloid cells was insufficient to block angiosarcoma development; in contrast, systemic inhibition of Ikkβ, IL-6, or Stat3 markedly inhibited angiosarcoma growth. Our findings offer clinical implications for targeting the NF-kB/IL-6/STAT3 pathway as a rational strategy to treat angiosarcoma. Cancer Res; 72(18); 4682–95. ©2012 AACR.
