    Notes: Polymeric nonlinear optical waveguides of a copolymer of 4-(N'-2-methacroyloxyethyl-N- methyl-amino)-4'-nitrostilbene and methyl methacrylate were tested for optical power handling capability at near-infrared wavelengths. When exposed to about 5×105 W/cm2 optical power density at 1325 nm wavelength laser light, the waveguide showed a rapid decay of optical transmission on the order of about 3 dB/h. Operation of the waveguides in an oxygen-free environment significantly reduced the decay rate to greater than 0.25 dB/h. The decay was a result of spatially inhomogeneous change of refractive index distributed along the length of the waveguides. Micrographs showing the photoinduced local variations of refractive index and the resulting loss of optical confinement of the waveguides are presented.

    Notes: Abstract A theory of the strength (or the tenacity) of highly oriented Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) fibers was developed, and its results were compared with existing tensile strength data of fibers of a copolymer of 1,4-oxybenzoate and 6,2-oxynaphthoate. A basic premise of the theory is that the mechanical load transfer between polymer chains is through intermolecular interaction which acts in a manner similar to that of shear stress, and that the fiber strength is primarily governed by the intermolecular adhesion strength. The theory also incorporates the effects of MW, MW distribution, and the chain orientation distribution. Analysis of the experimental tenacity data demonstrates that the present theory can quantitatively describe the variation of the tenacity of LCP fibers with MW both in the as-spun and in the heat-treated states. The theory further predicts that the predominant factor governing the tenacity of LCP fibers is primarily due to MW increase due to solid-state polymerization. It is also demonstrated that the intermolecular adhesion between LCP chains is relatively weak and does not improve with heat treatment. The absence of factors that limit the MW increase (i.e, imbalanced end-groups and side reactions of end groups) is a prerequisite for fast heat treatment of a LCP fiber to a high tenacity.

    Notes: Two classes of aryltrienes in which the conjugation was incorporated in six-membered rings have been developed. The microscopic nonlinear susceptibility, μβ, the product of the dipole moment and the second-order nonlinear susceptibility, of these chromophores were measured using electric field-induced second harmonic generation (EFISH). The chromophores were then copolymerized as side-chain pendant groups in a methacrylate backbone copolymer with methyl methacrylate and their macroscopic electrooptic coefficients, r, were experimentally determined using a reflection technique after electric field poling of the polymers. When compared with 4,4′-N,N-dimethylaminonitrostibene (DANS), these molecules demonstrated electrooptic activities up to three times of DANS, when measured at 1.3 μm. By using a simple two-level free-gas model, the two sets of measurements corresponded closely at low poling fields. At high fields, the simple model breaks down as more detailed poling parameters are required to accurately describe the nonlinear poling effects. The results of the analysis of the high-field poling data will be published separately. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The thermal behavior and laser marking of a novel nematic liquid crystalline polymer is explored in this report. The glass transition and mesophase transition temperatures of this material are at 45 and 68°C, respectively, and allow the ready annealing of the nematic phase as well as conversion of the nematic to the isotropic phase by pulsed laser irradiation of metallized or dyed films of the polymer.

    Notes: The solid-state extrusion of polypropylene by hydrostatic pressure has been investigated at four different temperatures: 25, 50, 75, and 100°C. The pressure to effect extrusion was found to be essentially a linear function of the extrusion ratio at each temperature, while the magnitude of the extrusion pressure, for any given extrusion ratio, decreased appreciably with increasing temperature. With increase in extrusion-ratio, the polypropylene extrudates became increasingly transparent. After passing through the extrusion dies; the Sample showed some elastic recovery. The amount of this recovery decreased with increasing extrusion ratio, X-Ray diffraction measurements taken before and after extrusion showed reduction in sharpness of the crystalline Peaks. Differential, scanning calorimetric measurements, on the other hand, indicate that the relative heat of fusion of the extrudates increases with the extrusion ratio at each extrusion temperature. It also increases with extrusion temperature for a given ratio. Tensile stress-strain tests were made at various hydrostatic pressure levels on the extrudates obtained at 25°C and the extrusion ratio of 2.8. Unlike on the virgin sample of polypropylene, ho yield maximum was observed on the extrudate sample at all pressures investigated. However, the effects of pressure on the relative increase in the yield stress-and the modulus of the extrudate are comparable to those of original, unoriented samples.

    Notes: The effects of combined pressure and temperature on the mechanical behavior of polypropylene have been studied. Tests were conducted in tension and compression superimposed on various hydrostatic pressures up to 7 kbar at temperatures of 20, 50, and 75°C. The experimental data have been analyzed in view of molecular and continuum approaches.It has been observed that the Young's modulus and the yield strength in both tension and compression increased significantly with increasing pressure at all temperatures studied. However, the rate of increase of the Young's modulus undergoes abrupt change about the glass-transition pressure (Pg). The Pg is linearly dependent on the test temperature and the pressure coefficient of the Tg is estimated, from Pg versus temperature relations, to be about 18°C/kbar for the polypropylene samples of this study. Pressure dependence of the yield stress is described by a generalized Eyring theory incorporating pressure effects and two flow mechanisms, the α- and the β-relaxation processes. The theory predicts a bilinear dependence of the yield stress of polypropylene on hydrostatic pressure as observed in the tests.The paper also described a method of healing stress whitening in polypropylene by a combination of shear stress and hydrostatic pressure.
