    Description: The HAB-forming, toxic dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi, previously found to benefit from ocean acidification (OA), was cultivated to investigate its transcriptional response to simulated OA for 30 generations. Batch cultures were grown under two CO2 concentrations, 450 (control) and 1100 (simulated OA) μatm, and physiological parameters [growth, pigments, catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity], as well as transcriptomes (obtained via RNA-seq), were compared. Chlorophyll a (Chl a) and carotenoid (Caro) contents, as well as CAT and GR activities, were significantly increased under OA conditions. Transcriptomic analysis revealed 2,490 differentially expressed unigenes in response to OA, which comprised 1.54% of all unigenes. A total of 1,121 unigenes were upregulated, and 1,369 unigenes were downregulated in OA compared to control conditions. The downregulated expression of bicarbonate transporter and carbonic anhydrase genes was a landmark of OA acclimation. Key genes involved in energy metabolism, e.g., photosynthesis, tricarboxylic acid cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, and nitrogen metabolism, were highly upregulated under OA, contributing to increases in the Chl a (55.05%) and Caro (28.37%). The enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities (i.e. CAT, GR) and upregulated genes (i.e. glutathione peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, heat shock protein, 20S proteasome, aldehyde dehydrogenase, and apolipoprotein) benefit cells against the potential lower pH stress condition under OA. In addition, the downregulation of four genes associated with motility suggested that the preserved energy could further boost growth. In conclusion, the present study suggests that K. mikimotoi exhibits efficient gene expression regulation for the utilization of energy and resistance to OA-induced stress. Taken together, K. mikimotoi appeared as a tolerant species in response to OA. Thus, more extensive algal blooms that threaten marine organisms are likely in the future. These findings expand current knowledge on the gene expression of HAB-forming species in response to future OA.

    Notes: A two-channel model of electronic conduction is shown to provide a satisfactory description of the magnetoresistances of Ag/Co and AgSn/Co multilayers with the current flowing perpendicular to the layer planes. A combination of data for as-prepared samples at magnetic field H=0 (for which the magnetization M≈0), and for the same samples in the ferromagnetically ordered state, is used to extract "best'' spin-orientation-dependent parameters of αCo=2.9(+0.5,−0.3) and αCo/Ag=12(+5,−2) from Ag/Co data and αCo=2.4(+1,−0.7) and αCo/AgSn=11(+7,−4) from AgSn/Co data.

    Notes: The photodissociation yield at the top of a condensed CH3Br layer on GaAs(110) is observed to oscillate as the layer thickness increases. The oscillation is successfully explained and fitted by optical interference theory. The method can reveal the dissociation mechanism and the molecular arrangement near a condensed layer surface.

    Notes: The dissociation of CH4 physisorbed on Ni(111) at 46 K is observed to be induced by the impact of incident inert gas atoms. The dynamics and mechanism of this new process, collision induced dissociative chemisorption, are studied by molecular beam techniques coupled with ultrahigh vacuum electron spectroscopies. The absolute cross section for collision induced dissociation is measured over a wide range of kinetic energies (28–109 kcal/mol) and incident angles of Ne, Ar, and Kr atom beams. The cross section displays a complex dependence on the energy of the impinging inert gas atom characteristic of neither total nor normal energy scaling. Quantitative reproduction of the complex dependence of the cross section on the Ar and Ne incident energy by a two-step, dynamical model establishes the mechanism for collision induced dissociation. Collision induced dissociation occurs by the impulsive transfer of kinetic energy upon collision of Ar or Ne with CH4, followed by the translationally activated dissociative chemisorption of the CH4 upon its subsequent collision with the Ni surface. The dependence of the probability of activated dissociation on the resultant CH4 normal energy derived from the fit of the model to the experimental cross section is in excellent agreement with the results of a previous study of the translationally activated dissociative chemisorption of CH4 on Ni(111). Collision induced activation and translational activation are shown to be consistent mechanisms for providing energy to CH4 to surmount the barrier to dissociative chemisorption.

    Notes: In this article, we demonstrate that a randomly chosen "Λ" shape modulated superlattice can serve as a better energy filter than an unmodulated superlattice. The oscillation of transmission probability in the minibands of the Λ shape modulated superlattice is shown to be greatly suppressed. We also demonstrate that precise control of the potential shape is not crucial for energy filters. The results should have prospective application in quantum cascade lasers, in which the improved energy filter can serve as the injection/relaxation region between active regions. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: Postlesion plasticity of neuronal processes might contribute to secondary spontaneous seizures after kainic acid administration. In this study, neurofilament (NF) proteins were examined following intraperitoneal injection of kainic acid, and special reference was given to temporal changes in quantity and quality of the NF light (NF-L) and heavy (NF-H) subunits. A pronounced decrease in phosphorylation-related immunoreactivity of NF-H occurred as early as 1 day after the injection in the amygdala/pyriform cortex, hippocampus, striatum, and dorsal cerebral cortex. A shift of NF-H from the phosphorylated to nonphosphorylated form was evident in immunoblots, suggesting dephosphorylation contributed to the decrease. Decreases in NF-L and phosphorylated NF-H contents in the limbic structure at 3 days were correlated with the increasing kainic acid doses from 2.5 to 10 mg/kg. The degradation pattern in immunoblots with antibodies against NF-L indicated that the decrease in NF-L was probably due to calcium-activated proteolysis. NF-L and phosphorylated NF-H contents secondarily increased from 9 days onward, with ∼20% above the control level of phosphorylated NF-H immunoreactivity at 27 days in the amygdala/pyriform cortex and ventral hippocampus. Immunohistochemical examination of the hippocampus revealed that an increase of NF staining in the mossy fiber system may contribute to the NF recovery in this region. Furthermore, the temporal changes of NF-L and phosphorylated NF-H contents were positively correlated with those of the neuronal cell adhesion molecule, a neuritic growth cone marker, substantiating postlesion regenerative reactions of NF proteins. Functional consequences of the NF plasticity remain to be identified.

    Notes: Engineering tests and full-field strain measurements are used to assess the accuracy of predictions made by the Binary Model, a computational tool for textile composites. The test case is a carbon fiber/SiC matrix composite, in which the reinforcement is a three-dimensional angle-interlock weave. The test composites are thin, having been designed for heat exchanger applications. The thinness leads to strong variations in local strains and strong effects of tow waviness upon macroscopic elasticity. The model performs well in predicting both local variations in strain and macroscopic elasticity. The effect of averaging local strains over variable gauge lengths is explored. Strains averaged over an appropriate gauge length have recently been proposed as the preferred measures of strain for use in local failure criteria.

    Notes: Marie Unna hereditary hypotrichosis (MUHH) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder with progressive hair loss starting in early childhood and aggravating at puberty. Several studies have mapped the MUHH gene to chromosome 8p21. Here we report a Chinese MUHH family with variable phenotypes. All affected individuals have anomalies affecting both hair density and hair shafts. Major clinical characteristics, disease history and histological examination support the diagnosis of MUHH, but the features of scarring in this kindred are modest and none of the patients have vertex hair loss, which is in contrast with typical MUHH. We now report genotyping and linkage analysis using 11 polymorphic microsatellite markers spanning the MUHH locus at 8p. Two-point linkage analysis using these markers revealed significant exclusion of this locus (log of the odds scores 〈 − 2) at θ = 0 indicating that there is a range of clinical presentations in MUHH, and that more than one genetic locus is responsible for the disorder.

    Notes: The resistance of an as-sputtered magnetic multilayer in zero applied magnetic field can be considerably different from the maximum resistance measured after the multilayer has been cycled to above its saturation field. We examine the relation between these two resistances in some Ag/Co, Cu/Co, and Cu/NiFe multilayers, and its implications for interpreting giant magnetoresistance.

    Notes: A technique is described for isolating effects of finite spin diffusion lengths on the magnetoresistance (MR) of magnetic multilayers at low temperatures by measuring the MR with the current perpendicular to the layer planes. Applying this technique to relatively concentrated Co/AgMn and Co/CuMn multilayers yields large effects, generally consistent with expectations from a theory by Valet and Fert [Phys. Rev. B 48, 7099 (1993)]. However, some complicating issues still need to be resolved.
