    Notes: Until now, the origin of hard magnetic properties of rapidly quenched Nd-Fe-B alloys with lower Nd concentration is not clear. In this paper, the phase compositions of rapidly quenched Nd4Fe77.5B18.5 alloys annealed under different conditions have been studied by using zero-field spin-echo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Mössbauer effect (ME) techniques. It is found that there exists a certain amount of Nd2Fe14B phase in the samples annealed at 960 °C and ingot alloy, which have poor hard magnetic properties; while, the sample annealed under optimal condition consists only of bct-Fe3B as the main phase and a small amount of a-Fe. However, the ME result indicates that about 5 at. % Fe atoms in FeIII (8 g) site of bct-Fe3B have been replaced by Nd atoms; the NMR result demonstrates that 11B NMR spectrum is the characteristic peak of bct-Fe3B, but it broadens asymmetrically to the high frequency side, which is due to the bct-Fe3B influenced by Nd atoms. The amplitude of radio frequency (rf) excitation field required to get the maximum 11B spin-echo signal from bct-Fe3B in the sample annealed at 839 °C is only about one third as much as that required to excite the 11B in the bct-Fe3B influenced by Nd atoms in the sample annealed at 670 °C for a short time, which implies the latter has a larger coercivity field than the former. It is concluded that the origin of hard magnetic properties of Nd4Fe77.5B18.5 alloy is not related to the 2:14:1 phase, but to the change of bct-Fe3B itself.

    Notes: Abstract. The Nambu spinor Green’s function approach is applied to studying the proximity effect in ferromagnet/d-wave superconductor (FM/d-wave SC) junctions. It is found that the magnitude of the proximity effect depends to a great extent on the orientation of the SC crystal with respect to the interface normal. On the FM side, near the interface there are two different types of density of states (DOS) with superconducting features. On the SC side, the DOS near the interface is spin dependent, indicating a local coexistence of weak ferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity.

    Notes: Summary The survival response of human colorectal carcinoma cells treated in vitro for 1 h with PCNU was characterized by a threshold exponential curve, Dq = 8 μg/ml (1 h) and D 0 = 22 μg/ml (1 h). Continuous treatment induced decreasing degrees of cell kill although PCNU was biologically stable in solution for at least 24 h. Cells treated with PCNU were unable to recover from potentially lethal damage but were quite capable of repairing PCNU-induced sublethal damage. Thus, PCNU with different alkylating and carbamoylating than other nitrosourea congeners had similar cytotoxic and repair inhibition capacities. Any therapeutic gain in the clinical use of PCNU must derive only from its lipophilic properties and not from its superior activity at the cellular level.

    Notes: Abstract Flavone acetic acid (FAA) was incubated for 1 to 48 hr with 3 established human colon cancer cell lines endowed with distinct degrees of phenotypic properties. All 3 lines responded to FAA in almost identical fashion; when incubated with the drug for only 1 hr, an initial decrease in survival was observed for concentrations of 250 μg/ml but no further increments in cytotoxicity were elicited when the concentration of FAA was augmented. Increasing the length of treatment yielded relatively modest increments (about 1 log) in cell killing only after an interval of 48 hr and only at the highest concentration (1000 μg/ml). Because of these relatively poor cytotoxic effects and because the therapeutic range of FAA is so narrow, we conclude that this agent will not be a valuable contribution to the antitumor arsenal, at least for colon cancer.

    Notes: This study focuses on the effect of various processing and cooling conditions upon the subsequent melting and solidification behavior of blends of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and high density polyethylene (HDPE). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements have shown that the crystallization of reprocessed PBT is different from the crystallization behavior of virgin samples. Two melting endotherms for PBT were observed for reprocessed PBT and for PBT-PE blends. The nature of each PBT peak is discussed in relation to processing history, solidification conditions, and composition. The presence of two crystallization peaks for the PE component in blends of PE and PBT are thought to be associated with the restriction of molecular motion of PE in the presence of the second component. The relative magnitudes of the two exotherms of PE vary with composition and cooling rate during solidification.

    Description: Objective Helper T (Th) cell responses are critical for the pathogenesis of Helicobacter pylori -induced gastritis. Th22 cells represent a newly discovered Th cell subset, but their relevance to H. pylori -induced gastritis is unknown. Design Flow cytometry, real-time PCR and ELISA analyses were performed to examine cell, protein and transcript levels in gastric samples from patients and mice infected with H. pylori . Gastric tissues from interleukin (IL)-22-deficient and wild-type (control) mice were also examined. Tissue inflammation was determined for pro-inflammatory cell infiltration and pro-inflammatory protein production. Gastric epithelial cells and myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) were isolated, stimulated and/or cultured for Th22 cell function assays. Results Th22 cells accumulated in gastric mucosa of both patients and mice infected with H. pylori . Th22 cell polarisation was promoted via the production of IL-23 by dendritic cells (DC) during H. pylori infection, and resulted in increased inflammation within the gastric mucosa. This inflammation was characterised by the CXCR2-dependent influx of MDSCs, whose migration was induced via the IL-22-dependent production of CXCL2 by gastric epithelial cells. Under the influence of IL-22, MDSCs, in turn, produced pro-inflammatory proteins, such as S100A8 and S100A9, and suppressed Th1 cell responses, thereby contributing to the development of H. pylori -associated gastritis. Conclusions This study, therefore, identifies a novel regulatory network involving H. pylori , DCs, Th22 cells, gastric epithelial cells and MDSCs, which collectively exert a pro-inflammatory effect within the gastric microenvironment. Efforts to inhibit this Th22-dependent pathway may therefore prove a valuable strategy in the therapy of H. pylori -associated gastritis.

    Description: Androgen deficiency is important in the pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation. Androgen regulates cardiac electrophysiology and calcium (Ca 2+ ) homeostasis. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether androgen receptor knockout (ARKO) can modulate atrial electrophysiology and arrhythmogenesis with modulation of Ca 2+ homeostasis proteins. We used conventional microelectrodes to study the action potential (AP) in left atrium (LA) tissues prepared from wild-type (WT) and ARKO mice (aged 6–10 months) before and after the administration of isoproterenol, hypocalcemic/hypercalcemic solutions, and ouabain. Echocardiography and Western blots were used to evaluate the cardiac function and expression levels of ionic channel proteins in WT and ARKO LAs. ARKO LAs had larger LA diameter with decreased LA fractional shortening than did WT LAs. In the current study, we found that ARKO LAs had a lower negative resting membrane potential and a greater 90% AP duration (APD) than did WT LAs. Isoproterenol increased the incidence and amplitude of delayed afterdepolarizations (DADs) in ARKO LAs but not in WT LAs. Hypocalcemic solutions prolonged APD in WT and ARKO LAs but increased DAD amplitude only in ARKO LAs. Hypercalcemic solutions shortened APD in ARKO LAs but not in WT LAs. Ouabain increased DAD amplitude in ARKO LAs but not in WT LAs. ARKO LAs expressed higher amounts of Ca 2+ /calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II, Na + /Ca 2+ exchanger, and phosphorylated phospholamban (Ser-16/Thr-17 site) and less Cav1.2, Kir2.1, Kir3.1, and Kv7.1 than WT LAs. These observations indicate that ARKO alters atrial electrophysiology with increased atrial arrhythmogenesis.
