Description: The interannual fluctuations of the equatorial thermocline are usually associated with El Niño activity, but the linkage between the thermocline modes and El Niño is still under debate. In the present study, a mode function decomposition method is applied to the equatorial Pacific thermocline, and the results show that the first two dominant modes (M1 and M2) identify two distinct characteristics of the equatorial Pacific thermocline. The M1 reflects a basinwide zonally tilted thermocline related to the eastern Pacific (EP) El Niño, with shoaling (deepening) in the western (eastern) equatorial Pacific. The M2 represents the central Pacific (CP) El Niño, characterized by a V-shaped equatorial Pacific thermocline (i.e., deep in the central equatorial Pacific and shallow on both the western and eastern boundaries). Furthermore, both modes are stable and significant on the interannual time scale, and manifest as the major feature of the thermocline fluctuations associated with the two types of El Niño events. As good proxies of EP and CP El Niño events, thermocline-based indices clearly reveal the inherent characteristics of subsurface ocean responses during the evolution of El Niño events, which are characterized by the remarkable zonal eastward propagation of equatorial subsurface ocean temperature anomalies, particularly during the CP El Niño. Further analysis of the mixed layer heat budget suggests that the air–sea interactions determine the establishment and development stages of the CP El Niño, while the thermocline feedback is vital for its further development. These results highlight the key influence of equatorial Pacific thermocline fluctuations in conjunction with the air–sea interactions, on the CP El Niño.

Notes: The Knoop hardnesses of five glasses decreased with increasing load in accordance with the classic indentation size effect (ISE). At moderate loads, cracking dramatically altered the indentation sizes and the ISE trends in three of the five glasses. Cracked indentations were as much as 10 μm longer than uncracked indentations made under identical conditions. Diagonal length readings must be corrected for optical resolution limitations if low power lenses are used.

Notes: Copolymers of oligo(oxyethylene) methacrylates and a series of polar comonomers, i.e. acrylamide, acrylonitrile and maleic anhydride, were synthesized as media for dual- or single-ion conduction, and correlation between polymer structure and properties was established through detailed studies on polymer morphology, mechanical property and the ion transport process. Polar groups in the polymer chain sequence were found to enhance matrix polarity and to retard oligoether crystallization, as well as to raise chain rigidity. Therefore, both novel dual- and single-ion conduction are realized, with a simultaneous improvement in the mechanical properties of polymer materials. An investigation about the effect of matrix polarity on the ion transport process is also carried out, making use of the concepts concerning polymer segmental relaxation. Hence the enhanced matrix polarity is found to contribute to the improvement in ion conduction, mainly through its promotion of salt dissociation. However, at high temperature this facilitation is counteracted due to the “anomalous” temperature-dependence of salt dissociation in the polymer matrix, and the higher the matrix polarity, the more drastic is the drop in carrier number with rising temperature.

Notes: The temperature-dependences of cationic conductivity and mobility in a macromolecular lithium salt/copolyether blend were investigated by means of complex impedance analysis and a time-of-flight technique, respectively. The transient ionic current after reversing the d.c. bias polarity exhibits two peaks, corresponding to cationic and anionic movement respectively, and verifying a cationic transfer number of 0.99 at 50°C. The comparison between conductivity and mobility makes it possible to reveal the temperature-dependence of the cation carrier number. As a result, the population of free ions was found to decrease exponentially with increasing temperature. However, this “anomalous” behavior of salt dissociation has little effect on the temperature-dependence of conductivity, since it is cation carrier mobility rather than its number which is the main factor influencing the ion transport process.

Description: The Doppler velocity dealiasing technique based on alias-robust VAD and variational (AR-Var) analyses developed at the National Severe Storms Laboratory for radar data quality control and assimilation is further improved in its two-step procedures: the reference check in the first step and the continuity check in the second step. In the first step, the alias-robust variational analysis is modified adaptively and used in place of the alias-robust velocity-azimuth display (VAD) analysis for all scan modes (rather than solely the WSR-88D volume coverage pattern 31 with the Nyquist velocity reduced below 12 m s−1 and the TDWR Mod80 with reduced below 15 m s−1), so more raw data can pass the stringent threshold conditions used by the reference check in the first step. This improves the dealiased data coverage without false dealiasing to better satisfy the high data quality standard required by radar data assimilation. In the second step, new procedures are designed and added to the continuity check to increase the dealiased data coverage over storm-scale areas threatened by intense mesocyclones and their generated tornados. The performances of the improved dealiasing technique versus the existing techniques are exemplified by the results obtained for tornadic storms scanned by the operational KTLX radar in Oklahoma.
