    Description / Table of Contents: Dieses Buch enthält sieben Aufsätze zu verschiedenen Fragestellungen aus dem Bereich der Naturwissenschaften und der Wissenschaftsgeschichte, die jeweils auch weit über ihren fachwissenschaftlichen Rahmen von allgemeinem Interesse sind. Da ist zuerst einmal die Frage, warum die modernen Naturwissenschaften nicht bereits Jahrhunderte früher in der technologischen Hochkultur Chinas entstanden sind und nicht erst im Europa des 17. Jh. Es wird gezeigt, dass der Philosoph G. W. Leibniz bezüglich China bereits 1697 die richtige Antwort hatte. Dann wird die Frage nach dem Wesen der Naturwissenschaften als Welterklärungsmodell gestellt. Dabei wird herausgearbeitet, was die Naturwissenschaften grundsätzlich von den Geisteswissenschaften und den Wissenschaften, die sich mit menschlichem Verhalten befassen, unterscheidet. Ein Artikel über den Informationsgehalt eines Termitenstaates führt uns über die Theorie der Information und hochkomplexer Systeme bis hin zu Anwendungen auf die menschliche Gesellschaft. Es folgen drei molekularbiologische Artikel. Der Abschnitt über den Gen-Begriff setzt sich kritisch mit Naturphilosophen auseinander, die den Genbegriff definieren wollen, mit dem die Fachgelehrten keine Probleme haben. Der Beitrag über Zwillinge und Chimäre verdeutlicht den Vorgang der Menschwerdung mit all seiner Problematik. Es folgt ein Text zur Erläuterung des forensischen DNA-Tests mit seinen Möglichkeiten und Grenzen. Er richtet sich an den Krimi-Enthusiasten, aber auch an den allgemein interessierten Zeitungsleser. Zum Abschluss skizziert ein Aufsatz die aktuellen Ergebnisse der Altersforschung mit ihrer möglichen gesellschaftlichen Relevanz. Altern ist nicht nur ein reiner Verschleißprozess. Er stellt vielmehr einen zentral gesteuerten aktiven Vorgang dar, damit zum Wohle des Gedeihens der biologischen Spezies, der nachfolgenden Generation Platz
