    Notes: Polymorphisms at five microsatellite DNA loci provide evidence that Atlantic cod Gadus morhua inhabiting Gilbert Bay, Labrador are genetically distinguishable from offshore cod on the north-east Newfoundland shelf and from inshore cod in Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. Antifreeze activity in the blood suggests that Gilbert Bay cod overwinter within the Bay. Gilbert Bay cod are also smaller (weight and length) for their age and consequently less fecund for their age, than cod elsewhere within the northern cod complex. The productivity and recruitment potential of coastal cod off Labrador may thus be much lower than that of offshore northern cod or of inshore cod farther south, implying that a more conservative management strategy may be required for cod from coastal Labrador than traditionally practised for northern cod inhabiting less harsh environments. Relatively high FST and RST measures of population structure suggest that important barriers to gene flow exist among five components that include two inshore (Gilbert and Trinity Bay) and three offshore cod aggregations on the north-east Newfoundland Shelf and the Grand Bank. DA and DSW estimates of genetic distance that involve Gilbert Bay cod are approximately three- and 10–fold larger, respectively, than estimates not involving Gilbert Bay cod. The differences between inshore cod from Gilbert Bay and Trinity Bay raise the possibility that other genetically distinguishable coastal populations may exist, or may have existed prior to the northern cod fishery collapse. Harvesting strategies for northern cod should recognize the existence of genetic diversity between inshore and offshore components as well as among coastal components.

    Notes: Abstract The one-dimensional theory of critical-length scales of phytoplankton patchiness is developed to include phytoplankton growth and herbivore grazing as functions of time and space. The critical-length scale L c for the pathch is then determined by the initial spatial distribution and concentration of the limiting nutrient and herbivores in addition to the daily averaged values of the growth and loss processes. The response of an initial phytoplankton patch to the stresses of turbulent diffusion, nutrient depletion, light periodicity, and nocturnal or continuous herbivore grazing is investigated numerically for several oceanic conditions. Nocturnal grazing, while less stressful on primary production than continous grazing, results in lower phytoplankton standing stocks. Increase in biomass of vertically migrating zooplankton results in a net loss of nutrient which might otherwise be egested, recycled, and utilized in the euphotic zone under continuous grazing conditions. The Ivlev constant is shown via sensitivity analysis to be a significant parameter ultimately influencing phytoplankton production. It is demonstrated numerically that diffusion of phytoplankton cells from areas of high concentration to low concentration prevents the local extinction of the standing stock, thereby rendering a positive herbivore grazing-threshold unnecessary for ecosystem stability.

    Notes: Abstract Fishery scientists and managers are investigating the feasibility of enhancing annual recruitment to the northern Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) stock complex off Labrador and northeastern Newfoundland through the release of farmed fish back into the sea. Release of newly matured fish and adults with farm-advanced fecundity would increase the spawning biomass. Enhancement efforts might be measurably successful in major bays that are year-round habitats for cod. To determine if farmed cod would remain and spawn in Trinity Bay, 14 fish with surgically implanted transmitters were released in November 1992. Sonic tracking confirmed that farmed cod released on the western side of Trinity Bay overwintered within the bay, and integrated with wild cod approaching spawning condition in April 1993. Blood plasma antifreeze levels confirmed that these wild cod had overwintered inshore in subzero waters. A spawning aggregation was found in July 1993, providing evidence that northern cod reproduce in Newfoundland bays. These findings suggest that it may be possible to increase the number of cod spawning inshore through the release of farmed fish.

    Notes: Abstract The acclimation of herbivores to variation in their phytoplankton food source was expressed mathematically and its effect on phytoplankton, herbivore and nutrient cycles explored with a plankton model. The grazing formulation is a modified version of the function experimentally determined by Mayzaud and Poulet. Their function differs from the traditional Ivlev expression for herbivore grazing in that there is no asymptotic limit to the grazing rate. The steady-state solutions of the phytoplankton-herbivorenutrient model were similar with the two grazing formulations, but the time-dependent behaviour of the two models differed markedly. The model with Ivlev grazing showed oscillations when the grazing pressure was high. The model with acclimated herbivore grazing showed only small, highly damped oscillations as it approached steady state. The latter is more similar to the evolution of plankton trophic levels observed in controlled ecosystem experiments.

Inter-individual variation in migration propensity affects population dynamics and connectivity. The diversity of migratory behaviours of Atlantic cod (fork length 〉40 cm) in the northern Gulf of St Lawrence was studied using data-storage tags that record depth and temperature. Movement patterns of Atlantic cod equipped with data-storage tags were reconstructed using a geolocation model based on daily maximum depth and bottom temperature. Reconstructed migration routes revealed the previously undocumented coexistence of resident and migratory individuals in the population. Migratory cod overwintered in relatively deep (300–500 m) and warm (5°C) waters, while residents displayed a prolonged period of immobility in shallow (〈100 m) and near-freezing (–1.5°C) coastal waters of western Newfoundland. In the spring, migratory cod displayed extensive diel vertical migration suggestive of spawning behaviour. The presence of alternative migratory behaviours should be considered in the spatiotemporal management of the collapsed population.
