Notes: The bound magnetic polaron (BMP) is the characteristic collective state of diluted magnetic semiconductors. Isolated BMP are well understood, but their interactions are only beginning to be explored. Recent polaron magnetization experiments on p-ZnMnTe suggest a ferromagnetic polaron-polaron interaction, in contrast to the invariably antiferromagnetic impurity exchange interaction in conventional semiconductors. To investigate this question theoretically, we have developed a simplified model of polaron pairs whose central feature is competition between the usual, antiferromagnetic, virtual-hopping interaction, and the loss of carrier-magnetic ion exchange energy, by intermediate ions, when the polaron moments are antiferromagnetically aligned. The model is sufficiently simple that its partition function can be calculated in detail. With reasonable parameters, it predicts a ferromagnetic polaron-polaron interaction at low temperatures. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report the first observation of optical nonlinearities due to subband structures in the growth direction of an n-type superlattice by four-wave mixing in an end-firing configuration. We observe a nearly eightfold increase in the third-order optical susceptibility when the electric fields of the CO2 laser are changed from a parallel to a perpendicular orientation to the plane of an Al0.08In0.92Sb/InSb superlattice. No change is observed in a control InSb epilayer under similar conditions.

Notes: Optical absorption and photoluminescence measurements were made on Cd0.9Mn0.1Te doped with As, P, Cu, and Au. Shallow acceptor ionization energies were determined as: 108 meV for P; 115 meV for As; 170 meV for Cu; and 180 meV for Au. These energies are larger than those for CdTe due to the formation of bound magnetic polarons. Self-consistent numerical calculations of the bound magnetic polarons are made for As and P dopants. The absorption spectra below 0.5 eV were separated into contributions from acceptor photoionization, inter- and intraband transitions, and free-hole absorption. Acceptor concentrations in the 1017 cm−3 range were found for As and P doping; however, Cu and Au were found to produce high compensation (〈1012 cm−3). Mechanisms for this behavior are discussed.

Notes: We report the first observations of large third order optical nonlinearities in AlGaAs/GaAs superlattices due to intersubband transitions. The process is triply resonant when the first intersubband transition matches the radiation from CO2 lasers. The intersubband relaxation time has also been estimated from the dispersion of χ(3) with the laser difference frequency Δω and found to be in good agreement with other published values. The magnitude and frequency dependence of the intersubband mechanism have been calculated using the diagrammatic technique.

Notes: The neuropsychological status and neuromotor performance of adolescent boys from lower middle class social environments who were detained as juvenile delinquents were compared to those of non-delinquent, lower and upper middle class controls. The delinquent index group showed pervasive impairment on all language measures, relative to both control groups, but did not differ from the latter on most neuropsychological measures that do not involve linguistic processing. Delinquents also demonstrated more minor neurological signs than either of the control groups; in the delinquents, but not in the control groups, neurological status predicted language performance.

Notes: Displacive modulation is defined as periodic distortion with an incommensurable k vector. If the phase of the distortion is t, a symmetry operation can be expressed as a normal space-group operation combined with a sign reversal and/or a shift in the variable t. Earlier results obtained by de Wolff [Acta Cryst. (1974), A30, 777-785] are reformulated in terms of these operations. The periodic functions defining the displacements of two symmetry-related atoms are shown to be related by a simple equation. Applications to published structures are given. The validity of this equation depends on a symmetry-adapted choice of the vector k. It is shown by a two-dimensional example that there are cases for which that choice of k requires the introduction of 'improper symmetry translations' with an extra t shift of ½ or ½. The ensuing Bravais lattice types are similar to those used for the description of magnetic symmetry.

Notes: A modulated structure can be depicted as a section through a four-dimensional periodic structure. In the latter, each atom is represented by a string continuing endlessly in the overall direction (e4) of the normal to R3, R3 being the hyperplane of the section. The strings have periodic bends or densifications for displacive and substitutional modulation respectively. Formulae for structure factors can be derived from this picture with little effort. The pseudo-symmetry of modulated structures can be described conveniently in this picture. Each four-dimensional space group to which the four-dimensional structure can belong is a possible MS3 (modulated three-dimensional structure) group of pseudo-symmetry, and is called an MS3 space group. It is shown that MS3 point groups are reducible in the form Q⊕ε. 1, where 1 is the unit 2 × 2 matrix, and ε = ± 1. A list is presented of these 31 groups written as black-and-white or colourless groups of three-dimensional symmetry. The MS3 space groups are discussed briefly. As an example of the peculiar differentiations caused by e4 being a unique direction, the 23 MS2 space groups are listed explicitly. Finally, it is shown that MS groups are essential for the description of MS symmetry, because very often the latter cannot be represented completely and unambiguously by the normal space group of an approximate superstructure.
