    Notes: A double-blind crossover trial of the α2 agonist lidamidine hydrochloride in 72 patients with irritable bowel syndrome is reported. Lidamidine was found to have no significant effect on frequency and severity of abdominal pain or abdominal bloating. It did cause a statistically significant reduction in frequency of defaecation (P= 0.005), but this was of a degree unlikely to be of clinical importance. Although α2 agonists inhibit gastrointestinal motility in animals this study suggests that lidamidine hydrochloride does not have a useful therapeutic role in irritable bowel syndrome.

    Notes: Abstract Three different techniques used tomeasure atmospheric formaldehyde were compared duringa field campaign carried out at a clean maritime siteon the West coast of Ireland. Two spectroscopictechniques Differential Optical AbsorptionSpectroscopy (DOAS) and Tunable Diode Laser AbsorptionSpectroscopy (TDLAS), together with a glass coil/Hantzschreaction/fluorescence technique, wereemployed for measurements of atmospheric formaldehydeof the order of a few hundred pptv. The betteragreement was observed between the fluorescence andDOAS instruments.Two DOAS instruments were compared to the glasscoil/Hantzsch reaction/fluorescence technique at asemi-polluted site on the North Norfolk coast, U.K.,where concentrations of formaldehyde were observed atlevels up to 4 ppbv. A very good agreement wasobserved between the two instruments.The glass coil/Hantzsch reaction/fluorescence and theTDLAS instruments were also deployed simultaneously inorder to measure indoor air inside a mobile laboratorylocated at the Imperial College Silwood Park site nearAscot, U.K. The doors of the mobile laboratory wereleft open in order to obtain the backgroundformaldehyde concentrations. Closing them afterwardsallowed us to observe the increase in concentrationsas a result of indoor emissions. The agreement betweenthe two instruments was outstanding (correlationcoefficient was 99%).The results from this study showed that of the fourinstruments included in this intercomparison the glasscoil/Hantzsch reaction/fluorescence technique provedthe most suitable for continuous measurements offormaldehyde in the background atmosphere.

    Description: Regional terrane analysis has been combined with a global evaluation of plate kinematics to produce a new tectonic model for the Mesozoic evolution of western North America and its associated marginal seas. The model employs a two-tiered data reliability ranking system to resolve conflicts within data sets. The lower tier of the ranking system involves the assignment of a numerical rank to paleomagnetic and/or paleobiogeographic data based on each data set's reliability. The upper tier of the ranking system places the paleomagnetic and paleobiogeographic data in perspective by assigning a relative order of importance to different types of data. The most reliable data are considered to be “departure” (rift) and “arrival” (collision) times that are tightly constrained by independent data sets. Evidence of subduction and/or strike-slip motion also ranks high in the master ranking system. Paleomagnetic and vertebrate paleobiogeographic data come next in the hierarchy, followed by invertebrate and floral paleobiogeographic data. Application of this approach to a case study, the “Baja British Columbia” controversy, has resulted in a coherent model for the entire region.

    Description: Plate tectonic reconstructions for the Cretaceous have assumed that the major continental blocks—Eurasia, Greenland, North America, South America, Africa, India, Australia, and Antarctica—had separated from one another by the end of the Early Cretaceous, and that deep ocean passages connected the Pacific, Tethyan, Atlantic, and Indian Ocean basins. North America, Eurasia, and Africa were crossed by shallow meridional seaways. This classic view of Cretaceous paleogeography may be incorrect. The revised view of the Early Cretaceous is one of three large continental blocks— North America–Eurasia, South America–Antarctica-India-Madagascar-Australia; and Africa—with large contiguous land areas surrounded by shallow epicontinental seas. There was a large open Pacific basin, a wide eastern Tethys, and a circum- African Seaway extending from the western Tethys (“Mediterranean”) region through the North and South Atlantic into the juvenile Indian Ocean between Madagascar-India and Africa. During the Early Cretaceous the deep passage from the Central Atlantic to the Pacific was blocked by blocks of northern Central America and by the Caribbean plate. There were no deep-water passages to the Arctic. Until the Late Cretaceous the Atlantic-Indian Ocean complex was a long, narrow, sinuous ocean basin extending off the Tethys and around Africa. Deep passages connecting the western Tethys with the Central Atlantic, the Central Atlantic with the Pacific, and the South Atlantic with the developing Indian Ocean appeared in the Late Cretaceous. There were many island land areas surrounded by shallow epicontinental seas at high sea-level stands.

    Description: The climates of two realistic geographic representations of the Triassic earth, corresponding in age to the Scythian (245 Ma) and the Carnian (225 Ma), are explored using a new atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) called GENESIS. The GENESIS AGCM is coupled to a slab ocean 50 m thick, with prescribed heat transport; it also incorporates three types of cloud cover and new models for vegetation effects, soil hydrology, snow cover, and sea-ice formation and melting. Boundary conditions prescribed in the separate Scythian and Carnian experiments include realistic paleogeography and estimates of paleotopography, solar insolation, atmospheric CO2 concentration, vegetation and soil types, and oceanic heat flux. Seasonal simulations of Triassic climate were performed using a horizontal spectral resolution of R15 (4.5 degrees latitude by 7.5 degrees longitude) and 12 levels in the vertical for the atmosphere and 2° × 2* for the surface. Results for both time intervals suggest that most of the seasonal precipitation fell on major highland areas of Pangea. Dry continental climates with very large seasonal temperature ranges (〉45°C) were modeled in the dominantly lowland interior of Pangea. Carnian continental climates predicted by the AGCM were wetter than those of the Scythian; however, both time intervals were characterized by strongly monsoonal circulation. Comparison of these results with lithologic and fossil proxy climatic indicators suggests reasonably good correlations. However, the extreme temperature variations predicted for both Scythian and Carnian are somewhat difficult to reconcile with the fossil record, although accurate interpretation of fossil proxy climatic indicators is not a simple matter. Additional AGCM sensitivity studies may be necessary to resolve this problem.

    Description: We have used a new General Circulation Model, GENESIS Version 1.02, derived from the U. S. National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Climate Model I (NCAR-CCM I) to simulate the climate of an Earth with realistic Pangaean geography. The climate model was run assuming that the ocean heat flux was similar to that of today, atmospheric C02 content was four times that of today, the solar constant was 2 % less than today, and the Earth's orbit was circular, with mean obliquity 23.4°. Models were run for paleogeographies at 245 Ma (Scythian) and 225 Ma (Carnian). The results indicate that no ice cap would develop over the land, and there is no permanent sea ice. The seasonal temperature Variation in the interior of the continent is in the order of 50 °C. The Continental areas are very dry except for a few Coastal areas and along uplifts. The models both suggest an extreme seasonal monsoonal circulation, with strong westerly winds parallel to the entire coast of Gondwana and the east coast of Laurasia during the northern hemisphere summet. In both hemispheres, the effect is to cause coastal upwelling. The model also predicts permafrost in the deeper soil layers poleward of 50° N and S. The effects of topographic uplifts on the atmospheric circulation are pervasive. Topography strongly affects the monsoonal circulation causing major deviations of the wind Systems suggested in model runs with idealized geographies. Topography also plays a crucial role in concentrating rainfall in a few small areas. It is evident that in order to have a realistic Simulation of paleoclimate, an accurate representation of the paleotopography is essential. It is also evident that the paleoclimate models may be useful in suggesting geological criteria that can confirm or reject the predicted paleoclimatic conditions.
