    Description: Closure of the Central American Seaway (CAS) and hydrology of the Caribbean Sea triggered Northern Hemisphere Glaciation and played an important role in the Pliocene to modern‐day climate re‐establishing the deep and surface ocean currents. New data on Mn/Ca obtained with femtosecond laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry on well‐preserved tests of the epibenthic foraminifer Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi and infaunal C. mundulus contribute to the interpretation of paleoenvironmental conditions of the Caribbean Sea between 5.2 and 2.2 Ma (million years) across the closure of the CAS. Hydrothermal activity at the Lesser Antilles may be a primary source of Mn in the well‐oxygenated Plio‐Pleistocene Caribbean Sea. Incorporation of Mn in the benthic foraminifer shell carbonate is assumed to be affected by surface ocean nutrient cycling, and may hence be an indicator of paleoproductivity.

    Description: 〈title xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"〉Abstract〈/title〉〈p xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xml:lang="en"〉The Mg/Ca of marine calcareous Planktic Foraminifera (PF) shells is commonly used for sea surface temperature reconstructions. However, compared to open marine environments, hypersaline (>40) oligotrophic seas have been shown to accommodate PF with higher Mg/Ca and divergent temperature to Mg/Ca relationships. To investigate influencing factors of PF Mg uptake in hypersaline regions, we measured the Mg/Ca of two flux‐dominating PF species, 〈italic〉Globigerinoides ruber albus〈/italic〉 and 〈italic〉Turborotalita clarkei〈/italic〉, derived from a monthly resolved time series of sediment traps in the Gulf of Aqaba, northern Red Sea as well as the corresponding temperature, salinity, and 〈italic〉p〈/italic〉H values. The PF exhibit elevated Mg/Ca which cannot be explained by post‐deposition or interstitial sediment diagenetic processes. 〈italic〉G. ruber albus〈/italic〉 displays Mg/Ca trends that strongly follow seasonal mixed layer temperature changes. Conversely, 〈italic〉T〈/italic〉. 〈italic〉clarkei〈/italic〉 Mg/Ca trends do not follow temperature but rather show significant Mg/Ca enrichment following mixing of the surface water column. We present a framework for incorporating elevated Mg/Ca into global Mg/Ca‐T calibrations for 〈italic〉G〈/italic〉. 〈italic〉ruber albus〈/italic〉 and present a new Mg/Ca‐T calibration suitable for hypersaline marine environments.〈/p〉

    Notes: Summary.  We here report a patient who developed a high titer antibody to factor VIII (FVIII) during gram-negative urosepsis caused by enterobacter cloacae after complete resection of rectal cancer. The patient initially presented with a life threatening spontaneous hematothorax and multiple large haematomas. Coagulation studies revealed a severe FVIII deficiency 〈1% with a high FVIII antibody titer of 64 BU. The bleeding responded rapidly to infusions of recombinant factor VIIa. After achievement of a partial remission (FVIII activity 28%) by combined immunosuppressive therapy (prednisone, cyclophosphamide, plasmapheresis and immunoadsorption), subsequently, two relapses occurred following steroid tapering. Resumption of prednisone and cyclophosphamide treatment combined with immunoadsorption induced a second and third remission, respectively. After resection of a papillary carcinoma of the bladder 6 months later and continuous immunosuppressive therapy with cyclophosphamide, FVIII levels remained stable within normal ranges. This clinical course suggests that the cause of inhibitor formation against FVIII resulting in severe acquired haemophilia was multifactorial and was initiated by the gram-negative urosepsis and probably by the underlying malignancies.

    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract In 70 patients a catheter was implanted in the popliteal fossa for repetitive block of the sciatic nerve in order to treat ischemic pain of the leg. At variable, individually determined time intervals of 4 – 12 h doses of 10 ml bupivacaine 0.25% or 0.5% were administered to 66 patients. In 4 patients a higher volume was injected. Good or excellent analgesia was obtained in 93%. Motoric deficits were seen in 2 of 3 patients. Improvement in perfusion caused by the blocking of sympathetic fibers was noticed in 5 of 17 patients. Technical complications occurred more often than with epidural regional techniques. The block of the popliteal sciatic nerve is of low risk and easy to perform. It is an effective alternative for symptomatic treatment of ischemic pain of the foot and lower leg.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Bei 70 Patienten wurde in der Fossa poplitea ein Katheter zur repetitiven Blockade des N. ischiadicus implantiert, um Ischämieschmerzen der unteren Extremität zu behandeln. In individuell angepaßten Zeitintervallen von 4 – 12 h wurden über den Katheter Einzeldosen von 10 ml Bupivacain 0,25 oder 0,5%, in 4 Fällen mit einem höheren Injektionsvolumen appliziert. In 93% konnte so eine gute oder sehr gute Analgesie erreicht werden. Motorische Ausfälle bestanden bei 2/3 der Patienten. Eine Perfusionssteigerung als Folge der Blockade sympathischer Nervenfasern wurde nur bei 5 von 17 so untersuchten Patienten beobachtet. Das beschriebene regionale Anästhesieverfahren ist einfach und mit wenig Risiko durchzuführen. Es stellt eine wirksame Alternative in der symptomatischen Behandlung ischämischer Schmerzen des Fußes und Unterschenkels dar. Technische Komplikationen traten im Vergleich zur periduralen Katheteranalgesie häufiger auf.

    Description: Determination of Mg/Ca in foraminifer shells as a proxy of seawater temperature is of particular interest in paleoclimate reconstruction. Here we show that femtosecond–200 nm–laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry is a suitable technique to precisely and accurately determine Mg/Ca in the micrometer-sized calcareous chambers of foraminifers. At low fluence (0.3–0.6 J/cm 2 ) the double-charged 44 Ca ++ and the single-charged 25 Mg + ions are measured nearly simultaneously. Integrated single-shot measurements using a pulse repetition rate of 1 Hz enable precise analyses at a depth resolution of about 50–100 nm/pulse corresponding to an ablated material of 0.3–0.6 ng calcite/pulse for a spot size of 55 μm. High-resolution analyses can be performed until a depth of 10–20 μm and thus particularly suitable for thin-shelled foraminifers. Reproducibility (relative standard deviation) is about 5% as approved by homogeneous reference materials. Calibration is performed with the microanalytical synthetic reference material MACS-3. Magnesium and Ca data of different carbonate and silicate reference materials agree within uncertainties with reference values. The procedure has been successfully applied for detailed analyses of single chambers and shell-depth profiles of live individuals and empty planktic and benthic foraminifer tests from different ocean basins.

    Description: This paper contains the results of an extensive isotopic study of United States Geological Survey GSD-1G and MPI-DING reference glasses. Thirteen different laboratories were involved using high-precision bulk (TIMS, MC-ICP-MS) and microanalytical (LA-MC-ICP-MS, LA-ICP-MS) techniques. Detailed studies were performed to demonstrate the large-scale and small-scale homogeneity of the reference glasses. Together with previously published isotopic data from ten other laboratories, preliminary reference and information values as well as their uncertainties at the 95% confidence level were determined for H, O, Li, B, Si, Ca, Sr, Nd, Hf, Pb, Th and U isotopes using the recommendations of the International Association of Geoanalysts for certification of reference materials. Our results indicate that GSD-1G and the MPI-DING glasses are suitable reference materials for microanalytical and bulk analytical purposes.
