    Notes: Abstract  In tetrapods, the functional (classical) class I and class II B loci of the major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) are tightly linked in a single chromosomal region. In an earlier study, we demonstrated that in the zebrafish, Danio rerio, order Cypriniformes, the two classes are present on different chromosomes. Here, we show that the situation is similar in the stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, order Gasterosteiformes, the common guppy, Poecilia reticulata, order Cyprinodontiformes, and the cichlid fish Oreochromis niloticus, order Perciformes. These data, together with unpublished results from other laboratories suggest that in all Euteleostei, the classical class I and class II B loci are in separate linkage groups, and that in at least some of these taxa, the class II loci are in two different groups. Since Euteleostei are at least as numerous as tetrapods, in approximately one-half of jawed vertebrates, the class I and class II regions are not linked.

    Notes: Summary Objective: The development of sudden postoperative hearing loss as a complication of microvascular decompression (MVD) operations in the cerebellopontine angle has already been reported. A sudden hearing loss of vascular origin may also occur hours or days after such operations, but even in such cases an improvement of hearing over the following weeks is possible. Here we report on a gradual deterioration of hearing over a period of two weeks after MVD which has not been described in the literature up to now. Clinical Presentation: A MVD operation was performed twice on a 36 year old patient with trigeminal neuralgia. After the second operation the patient developed a slight hearing impairment 3 days postoperatively which increased over a period of two weeks and ended up with total deafness. The course of intra-operative brainstem auditory evoked potentials and postoperative audiograms is documented. Conclusion: Because of gradual development of the delayed hearing loss, we conclude that postoperative tissue scarring may be the underlying pathology.

    Notes: The sequence variation of three exons of the major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) was examined in a lake whitefish Coregonus sp., population from the Swiss lake of Hallwil. DNA sequences from the Mhc class I A1, A2 and class II B1 exons, corresponding to the α1, α2 and β1 domains of the Mhc glycoproteins, were obtained by the polymerase chain reaction followed by cloning and sequencing. The numbers of variable sequences detected for each exon were 15 (A1), 11 (A2) and 20 (B1). Levels of nucleotide similarity ranged from 82 to 99% for the A1 exon, 58–96% for the A2 and 88–99% for the B1 exon. At the A1 and B1 exons, the nonsynonymous substitution rates (dn) exceeded synonymous substitution rates (ds) greatly within the peptide binding regions, indicating the effect of balancing selection. Sequence diversity at the A2 exon did not seem to be maintained by balancing selection (ds 〉 dn). Phylogenetic comparison of whitefish Mhc sequences with sequences from other salmonid species and more distantly related teleosts indicated shared ancestral (trans-species) polymorphism.

    Notes: Abstract. Theoretical and experimental studies were performed on the propagation of ultrashort optical terawatt pulses through the atmosphere. Propagation simulations of intense sub-picosecond pulses show that non-linear processes, such as white light generation, can be initiated at a chosen distance by selecting an appropriate group velocity dispersion. With this technique, a white light continuum was generated in the atmosphere whose spectral distribution was characterised in the visible and near infra-red. Applications of this novel light source for atmospheric remote sensing were investigated, combining lidar and time-resolved broadband absorption spectroscopy techniques. Measurements were performed on the oxygen molecule and water vapour. A comparison between the experimental results and the tabulated spectroscopic data led to an excellent correlation with measurements made on water vapour whereas observations on the oxygen showed discrepancy. This study demonstrates that the remote generation of a white light source represents a new way to access the range-resolved multi-trace gas analysis in the atmosphere.

    Notes: Abstract Polar stratospheric clouds (PSC) were observed with the multi-wavelength lidar of the MOANA project (Modelling and Observations of Aerosols in the Northern Atmosphere) during SESAME (Second European Stratospheric Arctic and Mid-latitude Experiment). The physical state, liquid or solid, of the cloud particles can be inferred from the lidar data. Using isentropic back-trajectories to obtain the thermal history of the sampled air masses, it is possible to reconcile most of the observations with current ideas on PSC formation and evolution. When the cloud particles were identified as liquid, changes in the size distribution of the droplets along the trajectory were calculated using a micro-physical box model. Backscatter ratios calculated from the size distributions are in broad agreement with the lidar data, giving confidence in current understanding of the evolution of ternary solution (H2SO4, HNO3 and H2O) droplets. Results from two soundings are shown which bear on the problem of the formation of solid particles. In the first, solid particles were detected. The air mass had cooled to the frost point 12 hours earlier. In the second no solid particles were detected although the air temperature was below the nitric acid trihydrate existence point, and had decreased by 12K in the previous 14 hours.

    Description: It is widely accepted that pure water cannot exist as liquid below about -40°C. Theoretical and laboratory studies confirm this behavior for pure water . Nevertheless, liquid droplets have been seldom observed in cirrus clouds down to -50°C. Miltiwaveleght depolarization LIDAR tecnique can help ti hunt usually cold supercooled clouds. The presence of non-depolarizing cloud layers is indicative of scattering with ylindrical symmetry, possible both with spherical droplets and with ice plates horizontally oriented. In this work, a -65°C cold, non- depolarizing cloud observed in Finland is analysed, concluding thath supercooled droplets are responsible for the absence of depolarization in most of the layer.

    Description: The physical condition of polar stratospheric aerosols is of great importance both for the modelling of surface chemistry reactions and for the understanding of particle production and evaporation in the polar vortex. The particles can be either liquid, supercooled liquids or solid material at different heights and temperatures. Since a solid particle can survive much longer when temperature rises above the freezing point, whereas liquid particles will evaporate quickly at temperatures above the condensation temperature, the knowledge of the physical state is an important parameter to estimate the contribution to heterogenous chemistry of the different aerosol types observed.
