    Notes: The reaction-bonded aluminum oxide (RBAO) process utilizes the oxidation of intensely milled aluminum/alumina powder compacts that are heat treated in air to make alumina-based ceramics. RBAO samples are typically oxidized in a furnace which is heated at 1°C/min to 1100°C. Heat-treating samples with a characteristic dimension 〉1 mm, without adjusting the furnace temperature program, usually results in a cracked ceramic. Cracking is caused by the excessive thermal and chemical stresses that result from steep temperature gradients (〉30°C/mm) and compositional gradients (〉5000 mol·(m3·mm)−1), which develop under the deleterious ignition and shrinking core reaction regimes. While adjustments to the furnace temperature program based on continuum models have had some success, the use of feedback-controlled firing is investigated as a means to avoid the furnace temperature program design step and to decrease the firing time. Feedback-controlled firing is shown to improve yields and significantly reduce the time required to completely oxidize the aluminum. For example, a 16 g sample with a characteristic dimension of 7.56 mm, which previously took 〉100 h to oxidize completely, was successfully oxidized crack free in 18.3 h using feedback control. Using the typical heat-treatment cycle, a 1 mm sample was fired in 18 h. With feedback-controlled firing, the same sized sample was fired in only 5 h.

    Notes: The reaction-bonded aluminum oxide process begins with aluminum, Al2O3, and usually ZrO2 powders that have been attrition-milled in an organic liquid. The attrition-milled powder is then compacted and heat-treated in air to produce polycrystalline, Al2O3-based ceramics. Safety considerations have made it desirable for the milling liquid to be changed from acetone to a less-flammable solvent. In this paper, mineral spirits, ethanol, and mineral spirits that contains 2 wt% stearic acid are presented as viable alternatives to acetone. The effects of changing the milling liquid on the reaction process and the properties of the final fired ceramic are investigated.

    Notes: Abstract Little has been written about evaluation and intervention services for children with a combination of behavioral and developmental needs. Two multidisciplinary clinic populations were compared, a traditional Developmental Disabilities (DD) clinic and a Behavioral-Developmental Problems (BDP) Clinic that had the additional services of a child psychiatrist. The BDP clinic children had lower IQ's and more severe overall behavioral problems than children in the traditional DD clinic, but differences were not statistically significant. Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and other psychiatric diagnoses were referred to both clinics at comparable rates. The effort to involve qualified mental health professionals in all aspects of professional training and clinical service for the DD population should be accelerated.

    Description: Volcanic gas emissions are intimately linked to the dynamics of magma ascent and outgassing and, on geological time scales, constitute an important source of volatiles to the Earth's atmosphere. Measurements of gas composition and flux are therefore critical to both volcano monitoring and to determining the contribution of volcanoes to global geochemical cycles. However, significant gaps remain in our global inventories of volcanic emissions, (particularly for CO2, which requires proximal sampling of a concentrated plume) for those volcanoes where the near‐vent region is hazardous or inaccessible. Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) provide a robust and effective solution to proximal sampling of dense volcanic plumes in extreme volcanic environments. Here we present gas compositional data acquired using a gas sensor payload aboard a UAS flown at Volcán Villarrica, Chile. We compare UAS‐derived gas time series to simultaneous crater rim multi‐GAS data and UV camera imagery to investigate early plume evolution. SO2 concentrations measured in the young proximal plume exhibit periodic variations that are well correlated with the concentrations of other species. By combining molar gas ratios (CO2/SO2 = 1.48–1.68, H2O/SO2 = 67–75, and H2O/CO2 = 45–51) with the SO2 flux (142 ± 17 t/day) from UV camera images, we derive CO2 and H2O fluxes of ~150 t/day and ~2,850 t/day, respectively. We observe good agreement between time‐averaged molar gas ratios obtained from simultaneous UAS‐ and ground‐based multi‐GAS acquisitions. However, the UAS measurements made in the young, less diluted plume reveal additional short‐term periodic structure that reflects active degassing through discrete, audible gas exhalations.
