Notes: The skin of the axilla is cosmetically important with millions of consumers daily applying antiperspirant/deodorant products. Despite this, we know virtually nothing about axillary skin or how antiperspirant (AP) use impacts upon it. To characterize the axillary stratum corneum and determine whether this is a unique skin type, we have looked at stratum corneum composition and function, particularly its barrier properties, and compared it with other body sites. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and corneosurfametry (CSM) revealed a reduced barrier function in the axilla. HPTLC analysis of the stratum corneum lipids demonstrated statistically elevated levels of fatty acids, ceramides, and particularly cholesterol in the axilla. Both ceramide and cholesterol did not appear to change with depth, indicating that they were predominantly of stratum corneum origin. On the other hand, at least some of the fatty acid had a sebaceous origin. We hypothesized that the reduced barrier function might be owing to the changes in the crucial ceramide : cholesterol ratio. To address this, we used a combination of attenuated total reflectance–Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (ATR–FTIR) with cyanoacrylate sampling. These results demonstrated more ordered lipid-lamellae phase behaviour in the axilla, suggesting that the elevated cholesterol might form crystal microdomains within the lipid lamellae, allowing an increase in water flux. Since an exaggerated application of antiperspirant had no effect upon the axilla barrier properties, it is concluded that this region of skin physiologically has a reduced barrier function.

Notes: The objective of clinical methods for the establishment of the rest position of the mandible is to establish a position at which masticatory muscle activity is minimal. Several methods are in clinical use but these methods may not elicit a position which is coincident with the lowest level of muscle activity as determined electromyographically.

Notes: Twenty-two human subjects performed sustained voluntary contractions of the mandibular elevator muscles firstly without and secondly with visual biofeedback. The level of electromyographic activity of the masseter muscle during the second clench exceeded that during the first clench by a mean of 36%. This differential indicates the ability of the subjects to override the central factors which normally limit muscle activity during a fatiguing contraction.

Notes: Aims:  Focal nodular hyperplasia-like lesions have rarely been described in cirrhotic livers. We describe five cases of such lesions. Methods and results:  Between 1998 and 2001, 146 liver transplants were performed at the Royal Free Hospital for cirrhosis of the liver. Nodular lesions identified in the livers removed at transplantation were defined histologically according to the International Working Party classification (Hepatology 1995; 22; 983). They were present in 63 of these livers, as follows: 36 dysplastic nodules, 121 macroregenerative nodules, and 71 hepatocellular carcinomas. In five patients, an additional 12 nodules (size range 4–23 mm, median 10.5 mm) showed histological features suggestive of focal nodular hyperplasia including mildly inflamed vascular fibrous septa, and ductular proliferation. Pre-transplantation imaging showed features suspicious for hepatocellular carcinoma, in three of these lesions (12, 23 and 23 mm diameter) from two different patients. These lesions were histologically indistinguishable from focal nodular hyperplasia occurring in non-cirrhotic livers, with fibrous scars and septa which contained vascular and ductular structures. Conclusions:  It is important to recognize that these lesions may occur in the context of cirrhosis and that they should be considered in the differential diagnosis with hepatocellular carcinoma, dysplastic nodules and macroregenerative nodules.

Notes: Abstract A trickle bed electrochemical reactor has been developed for the production of dilute alkaline peroxide solutions by reduction of oxygen. Oxygen gas and sodium hydroxide flow concurrently downward through a cell which consists of a thin packed cathode bed of graphite particles separated from the anode plate by a porous diphragm. Current flows perpendicular to the flow of electrolyte. The effects of current density, oxygen pressure and flow rate, electrolyte concentration and flow rate, graphite particle size, bed thickness and length were investigated. In 2 M NaOH peroxide solutions of 0.8 M have been produced at 60% efficiency with current densities of 1200 A m−2 and cell voltages of 1.8 V. A bipolar cell stack consisting of five cells has been tested.

Notes: Summary The fate of individual plants of Helianthus annuus was monitored in populations sown at a density of 650 seeds m-2. Ninety six percent of the seeds germinated but only fifty two percent of the seedlings survived to the end of the experiment due to self-thinning. Whilst the seedlings emerged over only four days the cotyledons then took up to eight days to emerge from the seed case and open fully. The survival of individuals depended primarily on cotyledon-opening time but plants which occupied very small areas (〈900 mm2) at germination were also less likely to survice. The increased likelihood of mortality amongst the late germinating individuals was probably as a result of shade from older, larger neighbours. It is suggested that one-sided interference for light during self-thinning will increase the importance of early establishment relative to neighbour effects in determining the survival of plants except at very high levels of crowding. The complex of environmental and genetic factors acting to maximise the growth rate of the very young seedling relative to its neighbours will clearly play an important part in determining the position of a plant in the size hierarchy of a population.
