    Notes: The effectiveness of the pumped divertor during the 1994/95 experimental campaign of the Joint European Torus (JET) [P.-H. Rebut, R. J. Bickerton, and B. E. Keen, Nucl. Fusion 25, 1011 (1985)] has allowed the pursuit of a broad-based research program that is highly relevant to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) [K. Tomabechi and the ITER Team, Nucl. Fusion 31, 1135 (1991)]. High-performance hot-ion discharges with high confinement (H-modes) free of edge localized modes (ELMs) have set a JET record neutron rate in deuterium, but are limited by various magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) phenomena to βN〈1.8, where βN=β/(I/aB), β is the ratio of the plasma pressure to the toroidal field pressure, I is the plasma current, B is the toroidal field, and a is the horizontal minor radius of the plasma. Quasi-steady-state ELMy H-modes have also been studied at high power, high current, and high β. The underlying energy transport exhibits a gyro-Bohm dependence that is lost close to the H-mode threshold and at high β. ELMy H-modes with detached divertor plasmas and radiative power exhaust (the operating regime foreseen for ITER) reduce the power loading to the targets, but at the expense of main plasma confinement and purity. Beryllium has been compared with carbon fiber composite as a divertor target material and melting has been induced at ITER reference off-normal heat loads, but only a moderate degree of self-protection of the beryllium target was found. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) is used adjunctively to treat chronic, non-healing wounds. Increased nitric oxide (NO) production during HBO is suggested as an important mechanism that promotes enhanced wound healing. The purpose of this study is the documentation of NO production during and following HBO treatments (txs). Diabetic and non-diabetic patients receiving HBO therapy (20 txs; 2.0ATA × 90 min) provided wound fluid and fasting plasma and urine specimens for nitrate (NOx) determinations. Nitrate measurements were obtained prior to HBO (baseline), after 10 and 20 txs, and at one and four weeks following HBO completion. In patients healing after HBO baseline plasma NOx ranged between 17.7 and 33.20 μM. At 10 txs plasma NOx increased 〉50% to between 35.8–43.5 μM. At 20 txs plasma NOx decreased to between 22.3–35.5 μM. Healing diabetic patient plasma NOx increased after HBO reaching 170% of baseline at one month (57.8 ± 0.15 μM). Plasma NOx of healing non-diabetic patients decreased to baseline levels at one month after HBO. Urine NOx values mirrored those of plasma NOx; wound fluid NOx elevations were delayed compared to plasma and urine. Conversely, non-healing HBO patients did not demonstrate the early, significant elevations of plasma NOx after 10 txs. This study documents, for the first time, an early (10 txs), significant elevation of plasma and urine NOx after HBO that is associated with successful healing in diabetic and non-diabetic patients. A similar early increase in plasma and urine NOx was not observed in patients not responding to HBO therapy. These findings suggest that HBO-mediated increased NO production plays a critical role in the correction of impaired wound healing in selected patients. Furthermore, early plasma and urine NOx determinations after HBO therapy may prove valuable in the prediction of the clinical outcome of treatment.

    Notes: Chronic venous stasis ulcerations (VSU) are associated with significant platelet and leukocyte activation with secondary superoxide anion and ROS production that may severely degrade nitric oxide (NO) production. This study was designed to document the possible association between NO production and the impaired healing of VSU patients. Twenty-four subjects were used for the study. Group C (n = 8) the control group, consisted of healthy adults without history of VSU. Group HU (n = 8) the healed ulcer group, consisted of adults with documented VSU whose ulcers healed with routine wound care and compression therapy in 20 weeks or less. Group UU (n = 8) the unhealed ulcer group, consisted of adults with documented VSU without healing within 20 weeks. All groups had normal renal function and were hospitalized for 24 hours on bed rest with a low arginine and low nitrate diet. Fasting samples were obtained for plasma and urine nitrate (NOx) and plasma arginine, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and isoprostane determinations. At 24-hrs, group HU demonstrated the highest plasma NOx levels (33.25 ± 11.69 μM) as compared to group C (19.45 ± 2.63 μM) or group UU (27.17 ± 3.67 μM); urine NOx excretion of group UU (51.46 ± 11.77 μM) was significantly lower (p 〈 0.05; Kruskal-Wallis) as compared to group HU (135 ± 38.29 μM) or group C (164.3 ± 38.58 μM). ADMA and arginine were not significantly different between groups. Ratios of NOx to isoprostane were disproportionate between groups. These results suggest, for the first time, a significant relationship between impaired VSU healing and deficient NO production. Furthermore, these findings establish the clinical value of measurements of NO production and bioavailability as effective predictivebiological markers for the healing of VSU.

    Notes: Near breakeven conditions have been attained in the JET tokamak [Fusion Technol. 11, 13 (1987)], with beryllium as the first-wall material. A fusion triple product (nDτETi) of 8–9×1020 m−3 sec keV has been reached (within a factor of 8 of that required in a fusion reactor). However, this has only been achieved transiently. At high heating powers, an influx of impurities still limits the achievement of better performance and steady-state operation. In parallel, an improved quantitative understanding of fusion plasmas has emerged from the development of a particular plasma model. Good quantitative agreement is obtained between the model and JET data. The main predictions are also consistent with statistical scaling laws. With such a model, a predictive capability begins to emerge to define the parameters and operating conditions of a DEMO, including impurity levels. Present experimental results and model predictions suggest that impurity dilution is a major threat to a reactor. A divertor concept must be developed further to ensure impurity control before a DEMO can be constructed. A New Phase for JET is planned in which an axisymmetric pumped divertor configuration will be used to address the problems of impurity control, plasma fueling, and helium ash exhaust. It should demonstrate a concept of impurity control and the operational domain for such a device. A single Next Step facility (ITER) is a high risk strategy in terms of physics, technology, and management, since it does not provide a sufficiently sound foundation for a DEMO. A Next Step program is proposed, which could comprise several complementary facilities, each optimized with respect to specific clear objectives. In a minimum program, there could be two Next Step tokamaks, and a Materials Test Facility. Such a program would allow division of effort and sharing of risk across the various scientific and technical problems, permit cross comparison, and ensure continuity of results. It could even be accomplished without a significant increase in world funding.

    Notes: The phenol⋅N2 complex cation has been studied with a combination of two-color resonant zero kinetic energy (ZEKE) and mass analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopies to probe the interaction of a polar cation with a quadrupolar solvent molecule. Extended vibrational progressions are observed in three modes which are assigned as the in-plane bend (35 cm−1), the stretch (117 cm−1), and in-plane wag (130 cm−1) intermolecular vibrations, and are consistent with a structure where the N2 forms a directional bond to the phenol OH group in the plane of the aromatic ring. Ab initio calculations at the UMP2/6-31G*, UHF/cc-pVDZ, and UMP2/cc-pVDZ levels of theory support this assignment. The spectra also provide a value for the adiabatic ionization energy (67 423 cm−1±4.5 cm−1) and an estimate of the dissociation energy of the cluster (1650±20 cm−1) which illustrate that the quadrupolar nitrogen molecule binds considerably more strongly to the phenol cation than a rare gas atom. These results constitute the first report of an aromatic⋅N2 complex where the interaction can be described in terms of weak hydrogen bonding, rather than in terms of a van der Waals bond to the π-system of the benzene ring. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The coumaran–argon van der Waals (vdW) complex has been investigated using a combination of (1+1′) REMPI and ZEKE spectroscopy, supported by ab initio molecular orbital calculations. Coumaran (2,3-dihydrobenzofuran) has a puckered, nonplanar equilibrium structure in the electronic ground state which allows for the formation of two energetically nonequivalent π-bound geometrical conformations. The experimental observation of bands attributable to two isomers in the REMPI spectrum is consistent with a significant barrier to planarity existing in both S0 and S1 states. The two isomers are related through the ring-puckering motion but the interaction of the argon atom with the monomer results in an induced asymmetry in the potential which transforms the ring-puckering tunnelling motion in the isolated monomer to a localized vibration near nonequivalent local minima. Both REMPI and ZEKE spectra show rich vibrational structure, characteristic of excitation of the long axis van der Waals bending mode and the stretching mode, as well as combination bands involving the vdW modes with low-frequency out of plane intramolecular vibrations. The vibrational structure is consistent with a shift in the position of the argon atom along the long axis upon excitation and subsequent ionization, as well as a modest reduction in the van der Waals bond length. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This report describes IgM, IgG and IgE antibody and contact sensitivity responses of strains of mice congenic at the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) to skin painting with picryl chloride or oxazolone. B10 had low responses of all classes to picryl chloride. This was also reflected by the DNA synthesis occurring in their draining lymph nodes alter painting. B10BR were high responders to picryl chloride for all classes but B10A and B10D2 were high responders for all classes except IgE. This presents evidence that genes in the MHC can selectively control antibody classes. The contact sensitivity response of the congenics to oxazolone confirmed the low previously described responsiveness of B10 mice. Antibody responses to oxazolone (agglutinin and reagin) were low for all congenics with B10 backgrounds.

    Notes: The microhabitat use of two size/age classes of fish (0 +, ≥1+) in the River Lee, based on measurements of 14 environmental variables, was studied using point abundance sampling by electrofishing over the summer and autumn of 1995. Microhabitat use by all cyprinid species (barbel Barbus barbus, minnow Phoxinus phoxinus, chub Leuciscus cephalus and gudgeon Gobio gobio) differed between 0+ and older (≥1+) with lentic, shallow, littoral environments being important for 0+ fishes, whereas deeper, faster areas in mid-channel were important for ≥ 1 + fishes. There was more overlap in microhabitat use by 0+ juvenile cyprinids in the River Lee than in larger systems such as the River Danube (Slovakia/Hungary) and River Great Ouse (U.K.).
