Notes: An apparatus has been constructed for x-ray absorption spectroscopy of elements at air/aqueous solution interface. Its surface sensitivity is gained from glancing incidence of synchrotron radiation under total reflection condition. The absorption is detected by total conversion He ion-yield method. This apparatus was operated at the beam line 7C of Photon Factory, where the incident photon beam comes from a sagittal focus double-crystal monochromator via a 70-cm-long bent mirror. The mirror focuses the beam vertically and changes the beam direction downward by 1 mrad to irradiate solution surface. The essential requirement of this technique, ripple-free liquid surface at accurate position, was attained by introducing a trough on a floating boat, continuous surface level monitoring, and an automatic Z-stage control. The x-ray absorption edge jump demonstrated that surface concentration of bromide ion follows the Langmuir type adsorption for tetraalkylammonuim bromide solution. By comparing the jump values for surface-active and -inactive bromide salt solutions, the detecting depth of the present technique was determined to be 8.8 nm. An extended x-ray absorption fine structure analysis of bromide ion segregated to the surface by stearyltrimethylammonium cation indicated that its solvation structure is different from that of bulk. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have already introduced a high-current ECR ion source producing a 200-mA beam of oxygen ions with an 80% O+ fraction. Two more advanced ECR sources with a high-current density of more than 100 mA/cm2 have been newly developed. One source provides high-current density without the accompanying damage to the microwave transmitting window found with the earlier source. This damage, which occurs when high-speed backstream electrons attack the window, limits source lifetime. By adopting a multiple microwave inlet configuration for the introduction of microwaves into the plasma chamber, the ECR condition can be satisfied and high-density plasma can be generated without an attack by backstream electrons. The other is a very compact source producing a high-current beam at a very low-power consumption. This is achieved by reducing the inner diameter of the plasma chamber to 5 cm φ, which is smaller than the cutoff dimensions for propagation of the 2.45 GHz microwave. A high-plasma density of 1 × 1013 cm−3 has been obtained at the low microwave power of 250 W.

Notes: Several kinds of multilayer films were sputter deposited between iron metal and AlN at room temperature up to a total film thickness of about 1 μm. The formation of iron nitride at the interface was explicitly observed on the film with a single-layer thickness of about 6 nm by He ion yield x-ray absorption spectroscopy and conversation electron Mössbauer spectroscopy. The partial reduction of AlN to aluminum metal at the interface was also observed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profile. Metal substitution between Fe and AlN occurred even at room temperature at the Fe/AlN interface. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have measured XAFS spectra of metal surfaces corroded with melting salt (NaCl, KCl, and Na2SO4). Steel samples used were S45C, SCM435, SUS310S, and SUS304. We measured the Fe K-edge XAFS spectra for all samples and the Ni K-edge for SUS310S and SUS304 samples before and after the corrosion. The XANES spectra of samples before the corrosion show metallic structure because surface oxide thickness is thinner than probing depth with a conversion yield XAFS method. Each result of these XAFS spectra gives good agreements with the FEFF calculation in the assumption of bcc and/or fcc structure. The Fe K-edge spectra of steel samples except SUS310S after corroded treatment show existence bonding between Fe and another light element although the spectra of SUS310S samples before and after corroded treatment are much the same. Notes: Iodine K-edge XAFS of triiodide ions in various solvents were measured at SPring-8 BL01B1 and analyzed. Though the anion takes a linear and symmetric form, the second peak expected from enhanced multiple scatterings can be hardly observed because of its large vibrations. The bond distances and the Debye-Waller factors for the I-I couple vary when protic solvents were used. It was indicated that the larger the Mayers' acceptor number of the solvent is, the larger the Debye-Waller factor is. It was also found that among the aprotic solvents, the larger the Gutmann's donor number is, the smaller the Debye-Waller factor is.

Notes: [Auszug] Rice plants (IR26) were dug out from an unfertilised wetland rice field and the roots were washed to remove soil. The washed roots were cut into segments and shaken vigorously with glass beads to remove rhizoplane bacteria. After several washings the root fragments were macerated to provide a ...

Notes: Abstract The effects of nicardipine on renal function were studied in anesthetized dogs. The changes in the tubular sodium (Na) and inorganic phosphate (PO4) reabsorption caused by the drug infusion into the renal artery without altered systemic and real circulation were especially evaluated. In dogs receiving a smaller dose of nicardipine (5 ng·kg−1·min−1) into the left renal artery the blood pressure and renal circulation did not change, but urine volume and urinary Na and PO4 excretion increased significantly. In dogs receiving a larger dose of nicardipine (50 ng·kg−1·min−1) into the renal artery, renal plasma flow, urine volume and urinary Na and PO4 excretion increased significantly, but creatinine clearance did not. The fractional distal Na reabsorption did not change with nicardipine infusion in either group. PO4 reabsorption is considered to occur mainly in the proximal renal tubule, so its appearance in urine in increased quantities without the changes of systemic and renal circulation suggests proximal activity of the drug.
