Notes: By cleaving crystals of YBa2Cu3O7 in high vacuum and evaporating Au in situ, we have fabricated Au-YBa2Cu3O7 junctions with very low contact resistance. Below Tc, the specified contact resistivity drops by three decades to an estimated value 2×10−9 Ω cm2 at 87.3 K. We emphasize the importance of correcting for spreading resistance in such studies. We also discuss the ideal contact resistivity, and possible contributions to the measured resistance very near Tc.

Notes: The twinning pattern in single crystals of YBa2Cu3O7 has been studied by differential interference contrast microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. In 10% of crystals studied large untwinned orthorhombic [(b−a)/a=2.7%] domains exceeding 100×100 μm2 in area are observed. The structure of twin defects is described and the existence of two types of minority domains is inferred. We infer from the domain structures a mechanism for the growth of twinning patterns in single crystals.

Notes: Abstract The radiographic findings of 200 cases of meconium peritonitis were analyzed; 194 cases were discovered in newborn infants and six cases in fetuses. The radiographic features in the newborn group could be categorized as pneumoperitoneum with intestinal obstruction (adhesions) and calcification (35 cases), intestinal obstruction with calcification (143 cases), intestinal obstruction with no radiographically visible calcification (5 cases), and calcification alone (11 cases). All six cases of the fetal group were diagnosed when the mothers had been hospitalized for polyhydramnios and a plaque-like or ring-like calcification showed up in the fetal abdomen on the plain radiograph. Meconium peritonitis is one of the few conditions that can be diagnosed before birth and is almost the only condition around the time of birth to produce calcification in the abdomen. Therefore, if there is any sign of polyhydramnios, radiographs or ultrasonograms of the maternal abdomen should be obtained to detect any calcification within the peritoneal cavity of the fetus. A simple experiment carried out in rats showed that it takes at least eight days after the meconium escapes into the peritoneal cavity for calcification in the meconium to be radiographically demonstrable.

Notes: Summary Although the chemoreceptive function of the carotid body has been known for many decades, the cellular mechanisms of sensory transduction in this organ remain obscure. Common elements in the transductive processes of many cells are the cyclic nucleotide second messengers, cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). Studies from our laboratory have revealed stimulus-induced changes in cyclic nucleotide levels in the carotid body as measured by RIA, but such changes in second messenger levels have not been localized to specific cellular elements in the organ. The present immunocytochemical study utilized the avidin-biotin-peroxidase method to investigate the distribution of cAMP and cGMP in the rat carotid body and to assess changes in the intensity of immunostaining following in vitro stimulation by hypoxia, forskolin, sodium nitroprusside, high potassium, and atrial natriuretic peptide. Both cAMP and cGMP immunoreactivity were localized to type I cells of organs maintained in vivo and fixed by perfusion. Organs exposed to 100% O2-equilibrated media in vitro produced low but visible levels of cAMP immunoreactivity in a majority of type I cells; hypoxia (5% O2-equilibrated media) for 10 min moderately increased the level of immunoreactivity; forskolin (10−5 M), or forskolin combined with hypoxia, dramatically increased cAMP levels in virtually all cells. Moderate levels of cGMP immunoreactivity in control carotid bodies in vitro were strikingly reduced by hypoxia; a significant increase in cGMP levels occurred following incubation in high potassium (100 mM), and under these conditions, the decrease in cGMP immunoreactivity with hypoxia was much more pronounced. The synthetic analog of atrial natriuretic peptide, atriopeptin III (10−7 M), greatly elevated cGMP immunoreactivity in the type I cells. On the other hand, sodium nitroprusside (1 mM) elevated cGMP staining mostly in vascular elements of the carotid body in vitro. The data implicate the involvement of cyclic nucleotides in transduction of natural chemosensory stimuli by the type I cells in rat carotid body.

Notes: Abstract In this work some calorimetric measurements were also carried out on the electrorefining silver by using different current densities with a Calvet type microcalorimeter at room temperature. The ratio (R) of the measured heat ( $$Q$$ m) to the input electric energy ( $$Q$$ in) and the excess heat ( $$Q$$ ex), i.e., difference between $$Q$$ m and $$Q$$ in during the electrorefining process, were discussed in terms of general thermodynamics. It was found that the R and $$Q$$ ex for silver were related with the current density or cell voltage employed in the experiment. The results obtained here also indicate that the heat generation under different conditions, such as different currents or voltages may be caused partially by the irreversibility of the process or by some unknown processes.

Notes: Abstract We propose a local algorithm for smooth unconstrained optimization problems with n variables. The algorithm is the optimal combination of an exact Newton step with Choleski factorization and several inexact Newton steps with preconditioned conjugate gradient subiterations. The preconditioner is taken as the inverse of the Choleski factorization in the previous exact Newton step. While the Newton method is converging precisely with Q-order 2, this algorithm is also precisely converging with Q-order 2. Theoretically, its average number of arithmetic operations per step is much less than the corresponding number of the Newton method for middle-scale and large-scale problems. For instance, when n=200, the ratio of these two numbers is less than 0.53. Furthermore, the ratio tends to zero approximately at a rate of log 2/logn when n approaches infinity.

Wu We address the controversy over the spin transport mechanism in Alq 3 utilizing spin pumping in the Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 / Alq 3 / Pd system. An unusual angular dependence of the inverse spin Hall effect is found. It, however, disappears when the microwave magnetic field is fully in the sample plane, excluding the pr… [Phys. Rev.
