    Notes: The problem of the migration of impurities from plastic containers has been analyzed, and the effect of the outward diffusion of the container contents on the impurity migration has been considered. The system of equations describing the coupled diffusion problem has been solved using finite-difference methods, and an analytical solution has been developed for the initial stages of the mass transfer process. It was found that the outward diffusion of the container contents can exhibit a large effect on the migration of impurity if the ratio of the diffusivity of the container contents to the diffusivity of the impurity exceeds 100. Sufficiently large values of this diffusivity ratio and of the impurity partition coefficient can minimize the buildup of undesirable impurities in the contents of a plastic container.

    Description: We use a single-particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SPAMS) coupled with a ground-based counterflow virtual impactor (GCVI) to measure the chemical compositions of individual submicron fog droplet residues. This is the first report of single-particle mass spectrometry measurements of fog droplet residual particles at ground level in an urban area. We show that most of the fog droplet residues were composed of elemental carbon (EC) (67.7%), followed by K-rich (19.2%) and mineral dust/metal (12.3%) particles. The predominance of EC-containing particles demonstrated that these particles could be effective fog nuclei and highlights the important influence of anthropogenic emissions on regional climate system. Compared with interstitial and ambient aerosols, nitrate was enhanced, sulfate was depressed, and ammonium- and organics-containing particles were hardly found in the fog droplet residues during fog events, suggesting that dust and metal particles containing nitrate may be preferentially activated and that ammonium and organics may not play important roles in fog formation in Guangzhou. We also present direct observational evidence that trimethylamine (TMA) and hydroxymethanesulfonate (HMS) are not found within fog droplet residues, although we previously observed enhanced gas-to-particle partitioning of these compounds by fog processing. Additionally, higher fraction or intensities of [K] + , [Fe] + and [SiO 3 ] - were found in fog droplet residues than in ambient and interstitial particles.

    Description: IntroductionAlthough fire as a critical ecological process shapes the Florida Everglades landscape, researchers lack landscape-based approach for fire management. The interactive effect of fire, nutrients, water depth, and invasive cattails (Typha spp.) on vegetation communities is of special concern for ecosystem restoration. In particular, questions concerning the effect of fire on nutrient release and, by extension, the potential thereof to stimulate sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense Crantz) re-growth and cattail expansion under varying hydrological conditions are of immediate relevance to ecologists and land managers who work to restore the Everglades. Methods: In late April of 1999, a 42,875 ha surface fire, including a 100 ha peat fire, burned the northern section of Water Conservation Area 3A (WCA-3A) in the Everglades. In this study, total phosphorus (TP) in soil, surface water, pore-water, and vegetation was sampled at non-burned, surface-burned and peat-burned areas within one and five months after the burn. Four years after the initial fire, field data were collected in a large scale survey to analyze how the 1999 fire affected cattail distribution in the altered landscape of high soil TP and cattail habitats. Existing GIS maps were utilized to select field sampling locations and to provide additional information for the analysis. Results: The analyses showed that five months after the fire, sawgrass biomass re-growth was about 5 times higher in burned areas (611 ± 47 g/m2) than in non-burned areas (102 ± 18 g/m2). Sawgrass re-growth in water depths less than 30 cm was 4.9 ± 0.4 g/m2/day while sawgrass re-growth in water depths deeper than 60 cm decreased to 0.5 ± 0.3 g/m2/day. Cattail biomass re-growth in peat-burned areas was as high as 1,079 ± 38 g/m2. The data also showed that post-fire cattail expansion could be related to cattail stands existing before the fire. Furthermore, post-fire cattail appeared more significant expansion in the areas with soil TP above 900 mg/kg than in that with soil TP below 900 mg/kg. Conclusions: The data showed that fire within altered landscapes (e.g. high soil TP and/or cattail) of the Everglades could stimulate the re-growth and expansion of cattails, and post-fire re-growth of sawgrass could be severely impeded by deep water after a surface-burn. This research indicates that fire continues to be an effective ecological process for maintaining the Everglades; therefore, ecologists and land managers may have to reevaluate the future management of natural fire with regard to its dynamic relationship with high soil TP and cattail expansion in the altered Everglades landscape.

    Description: Subhorizontal lake shorelines allow a geodynamic test of the size and extent of a hypothesized paleo-lake in central Tibet, the East Qiangtang Lake (EQL), during the last interglacial period (Marine Isotope Stage [MIS] 5e). Reconstructions based on relict lake deposits suggest that the EQL would have been ~400 m deep and over ~66,000 km 2 . Models of flexural rebound driven by lake recession predict that shorelines near the EQL center, at the present-day location of Siling Co, would have rebounded 60-90 m above their initial elevation. New 36 Cl chronology of the highest relict shorelines around Siling Co indicates that they reflect lake levels between 110-190 ka. These shorelines, however, are presently 〉300 m below their predicted elevations, implying a substantially smaller water load. Our results reveal that the expansion of Tibetan lakes during MIS 5e was relatively limited. Instead, individual lakes were supplied by river networks, much as they are today.
