    Description: We report comprehensive, demonstrably contaminant-free measurements of binary particle formation rates by sulfuric acid and water for neutral and ion-induced pathways conducted in the CERN CLOUD chamber. The recently developed Atmospheric Pressure interface-Time Of Flight-Mass Spectrometer was used to detect contaminants in charged clusters and to identify runs free of any contaminants. Four parameters were varied to cover ambient conditions: sulfuric acid concentration (10 5 to 10 9 molecules cm −3 ), relative humidity (11% to 58%), temperature (207K to 299K), and total ion concentration (0 to 6800 ions cm −3 ). Formation rates were directly measured with novel instruments at sizes close to the critical cluster size (mobility size of 1.3 nm to 3.2 nm). We compare our results with predictions from Classical Nucleation Theory normalized by Quantum Chemical calculation (QC-normalized CNT), which is described in a companion paper. The formation rates predicted by the QC-normalized CNT were extended from critical cluster sizes to measured sizes using the UHMA2 sectional particle microphysics model. Our results show, for the first time, good agreement between predicted and measured particle formation rates for the binary (neutral and ion-induced) sulfuric acid- water system. Formation rates increase with RH, sulfuric acid and ion concentrations and decrease with temperature at fixed RH and sulfuric acid concentration. Under atmospheric conditions neutral particle formation dominates at low temperatures, while ion-induced particle formation dominates at higher temperatures. The good agreement between the theory and our comprehensive data set gives confidence in using the QC-normalized CNT as a powerful tool to study neutral and ion-induced binary particle formation in atmospheric modeling.

    Notes: The influence of N in slurry or in mineral fertilizers on herbage yield and nitrogen fixation by white clover grown in mixed swards was investigated. Two levels of N in cattle slurry were compared with a range of mineral N fertilization. The percentage of N derived from symbiosis (% Nsym) was measured by the 15N-isotope dilution method. The measurements were made in spring 1987 in two 4-year-old field trials, and included two out of five harvests.The % Nsym was approximately 90% without N fertilization. It decreased in response to both mineral N and N in slurry but did not fall below 63%. The sum of two harvests revealed that 51·2 kg N ha−1 were fixed in the absence of N fertilization. With 75 kg mineral N ha−1 or 50 m3 cattle slurry ha−1, the yield of fixed N decreased to 17·2 and 24·9 kg ha−1, respectively. When compared on the basis of the fertilizer effect on dry matter yield and N concentration of perennial ryegrass, the decrease in yield of N fixed due to treatment with cattle slurry was less than that due to mineral N fertilizer. This was owing to the smaller extent of the depression in the proportion of white clover in the sward when the same amount of N was applied in cattle slurry, as compared with mineral fertilizer, although % Nsym responded similarly to both types of N fertilization.

    Notes: Eight spring barley accessions from the gene bank in Gatersleben, Germany, and 10 cultivars were tested for stripe rust resistance. Tests were performed at the seedling stage in the growth chamber and as adult plants in the field. All accessions and six cultivars were scored as resistant against race 24 under all test conditions, with very few plants as exceptions, while the susceptible control cultivars ‘Karat’ and ‘Certina’, and four other cultivars were attacked in all cases. Differences between accessions and between cultivars were detected after infection with isolates from ‘Trumpf’ and ‘Bigo’ (seedling tests only). Infection structures within seedling leaves without pustules and for the first time within leaves of adult plants from the field were analysed by fluorescence microscopy. With this method additional genetic Differences in the resistance reaction could be detected which could not to be seen in the resistance test. Crosses between the accessions and the susceptible cultivar ‘Karat’ led to segregating F2 progenies. The percentage of resistant plants varied between the accessions. This also indicates a different genetic basis of resistance in the accessions. The infection structures observed by fluorescence microscopy stopped earlier in leaves of the two accessions HOR 8979 and HOR 8991 than in leaves of other accessions in all the tests. These accessions were the only ones with more than 50% resistant plants in all F2 tests. In general, the accessions from the gene bank can be used as new resistance sources against stripe rust.

    Notes: An outline is given of results for the transfer of new resistances against leaf rust and barley mosaic viruses from Hordeum bulbosum into winter barley. Progenies from backcrosses of barley cultivars with H. bulbosum hybrids were tested both in conventional breeding trials and in additional tests under controlled conditions. Resistance to both pathogens proved to be stable and of good heritability, with differences occurring which depended on the combinations used. Lines with resistance to all leaf rust and mosaic viruses tested, or to either one, were selected. Both resistances segregated independently.

    Notes: Background  There are very few data regarding sun exposure behaviour of patients with basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in central Europe.Objectives  A case–control study of patients with sporadic BCC was conducted to assess the risk of occupational and leisure-time sun exposure behaviour, precursor lesions for skin cancer and phenotypic factors on the development of sporadic BCC in Ulm and Dresden, Germany.Methods  A comparison was made of 213 patients with BCC (128 from Ulm, 85 from Dresden; 103 men and 110 women; median age at diagnosis 69 years) and 411 controls (237 from Ulm, 174 from Dresden; 197 men and 214 women; median age 58 years). Crude odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals for all of 64 possible risk factors revealed strong associations in 33 items. Selection of important risk factors was performed in a multiple logistic regression.Results  For sporadic BCC, an increased risk was shown for persons with actinic cheilitis (OR 7·1), actinic keratosis (OR 2·7) and solar lentigo (OR 2·5). The only phenotypic factor indicating risk of sporadic BCC was hair colour, with a higher risk for red/fair than brown/black hair (OR 4·3). There was an increased risk for persons with BCC in first-degree relatives (OR 5·1) and those with sunburn 20 years before sporadic BCC was diagnosed (OR 3·6). Additionally, occupational ultraviolet (UV) exposure appeared to be a risk factor (OR 2·4). In contrast, clinical actinic elastosis showed a protective effect (OR 0·1).Conclusions  In contrast to earlier reports, clinical actinic elastosis turned out to be the only protective factor for sporadic BCC. A special relationship between wrinkling and BCC risk could not be shown. For basic research, future work should be aimed at elucidating further the different forms of collagen repair processes after intermittent and/or chronic UV exposure. The data strongly support the recommendation that a change in recreational UV exposure habits in individuals, and sunburn avoidance in particular, are necessary not only because of the increased long-term risk of melanoma, but also because of the risk of other skin cancers such as sporadic BCC.

    Notes: Summary The metabolic fate of cotinine, the major metabolite of nicotine, was studied in phenobarbital-induced and non-induced isolated perfused rat lung and liver and in isolated hepatocytes of rats and mice. The non-induced lung tissue showed low cotinine metabolizing capacity while the perfused liver was approximately four times more active. After phenobarbital pretreatment the metabolism of cotinine was increased eight-fold in the intact liver. A substantial increase in cotinine metabolism was also found in isolated hepatocytes from PB-induced rats and in cultured mouse hepatocytes grown in a medium supplemented with PB. This was paralleled by an increased formation of cotinine-N-oxide which could be inhibited by 100 μM metyrapone. In contrast, the pulmonary elimination of cotinine was not affected by PB. A dominant role of primary N-oxidation of nicotine compared to C-oxidation was apparent in non-induced rat liver. After PB treatment the rate of nicotine-N′-oxide formation dropped markedly while the cotinine related pathways were increased causing an inversion of the N- to C-oxidation ratio. In the lung, cotinine formation was the preferred metabolic pathway of nicotine already in non-induced organs. The pattern of nicotine metabolites was not altered by PB induction. In conscious PB-induced rats receiving nicotine orally or intravenously, 3′-hydroxycotinine was found as the main urinary metabolite of nicotine while only a small fraction was excreted as cotinine-N-oxide. This discrepancy between the profile of nicotine metabolites in perfused liver and lung and in the urine in vivo indicates that extrahepatic organs other than the lung may be important sites of cotinine metabolism.
