Notes: Polymers of methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, and acrylonitrile labeled with carbon-14 in the functional groups have been prepared. The labeled polymers have been subjected to hydrolysis, and the specific activities before and after treatment have been compared. Almost complete hydrolysis of polymethyl acrylate and polyvinyl alcohol is readily achieved. It has been confirmed that polymethyl methacrylate is rather resistant to hydrolysis, but ester endgroups in this polymer are easily detached. During treatment of polyacrylonitrile with acid or alkali, no carbon atoms are lost from the polymer.

Notes: The effect of alkyl and aryl dimaleimides on the rate of crosslinking of natural rubber is described by means of experiments with ionizing radiation. The dose for vulcanization can be reduced from 5 × 107 to 2.0 × 106 rad by use of purified rubber and 5% of additive, and the reaction is dose-rate dependent with an intensity exponent of 0.57. The reaction is further accelerated by the addition of small quantities of solvents. By use of C14-labeled dimaleimides it is shown that there is approximately one dimaleimide unit to each crosslink. Possible chain mechanisms for the reaction are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Die Synthese definiert verzweigter Polyvinlacetate wird beschrieben.
Notes: A mode of synthesis of well characterised branched polyvinyl acetate is described. Linear polymer is first produced by a low temperature photopolymerisation carried to a low degree of conversion. Partial hydrolysis of this „backbone“ material introduces a small number of hydroxyl groups into the polymer which is then condensed with low molecular weight polymer having an acid chloride endgroup. This is prepared by initiating the polymerisation of vinyl acetate with 4,4′ azo-bis-4-cyanopentanoic acid, and subsequently treating this carboxyl-ended polymer with thionyl chloride. This method has the distinct advantage that both constituents of the branched polymer can be fractionated prior to the grafting process (condensation). The degree of branching has been estimated using both a radiochemical method based upon 14C, and infra-red analysis. The viscosities of the branched and linear polymers have been measured in the tetrahydrofuran solutions. Within the limits of these investigations, the limiting viscosity number appears to be insensitive to the extent of branching, for molecules having the same overall degree of polymerisation. There is however considerable variation in k′ (HUGGINS constant), k′ increasing with the extent of branching.

Notes: A range of branched polymers has been prepared by condensing polyvinyl acetate chains containing a terminal carboxyl group, on to a radioactive, partially alcoholyzed backbone of polyvinyl acetate. The important advantage of this process over normal grafting techniques is that the branches may be fractionated and characterized prior to attachment to the main chain. The viscosity behavior of these molecules in dilute solution has been studied, and, although the degree of coiling appears to be similar to that for corresponding linear molecules of the same molecular weight, they do show abnormally high Huggins' constants. Tetrahydrofuran was used as a solvent for the viscosity measurements in order that unreacted hydroxyl groups would not affect the value of the limiting viscosity number and slope constants. Before other solution properties are examined, the polymers will be acetylated in solution with ketene.

Notes: The irradiation of trimeric and higher molecular weight linear and cyclic phosphonitrilic chlorides is described using 4 MeV electrons from a linear accelerator. The yields of polymer obtained under a variety of conditions, in the presence and absence of oxygen, are given. The changes in the infrared spectrum following irradiation indicate the presence of phosphorus-oxygen-phosphorus bonds in the polymers. It is found that the cyclic polymers are radiation stable in accordance with their aromatic character whereas the linear polymers and phosphonitrilic chloride gel are more sensitive to ionizing radiation.

Notes: The effect of m-phenylenedimaleimide on the rate of cross linking of synthetic rubbers, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, and other polymers, under the action of ionizing radiation is described. The dose reduction factor for equivalent degrees of crosslinking obtained with and without the maleimide varies from 10 to 25 for the synthetic rubber. Further evidence is given to show that maleimides sensitize the vulcanization of unsaturated polymers, principally by copolymerization, and certain saturated polymers containing labile atoms, by a transfer mechanism.
